Apartment living Hi. It's been a while since I've been on here. I just moved into a third floor apartment. I wanted to get advice on apartment living with a dog! I am new to a apartment in general. Currently, my two dogs are with my mom. They are use to being able to go out into a fenced backyard whenever they need to potty. How much hassle would it to be walk dogs when I'm on the third floor? My apartment complex has plenty of dogs! My neighbors have two yorkies and they use a grass potty patch on the balcony. Also, it's a $500 non refundable deposit plus I have to pay to have the carpet deflead and deodorized when I move out. Is this the norm? Thanks!! |
I live in a 3rd floor apartment and it's not a big deal. I think it depends on the style of the apartment. I live in an older apartment complex and I just have to walk up a set of stairs to get to my door. In some of the newer apartments, which are more of a "hotel style", would be more difficult. Whenever Sophia stands by the door, I just pick her up and we walk down to go outside. I had to pay a $400 refundable deposit... but there's no way I'm getting that back after Sophia's puppy accidents and doggy diarrhea... so I see it as non-refundable lol. I don't have to pay to get it deflead or deodorized. I've never heard of having to do that in any apartment. I'm surprised that's not covered in the nonrefundable deposit. |
It's a newer complex but there are three flights of stairs to get down. There is a large walking area, which is really nice. I think it's a little ridiculous that it's not refundable and that I have to pay for the carpet. |
I agree. I think as long as you don't have to go through a bunch of hallways, then it shouldn't be too bad. I think that's ridiculous too because usually that's what the deposit is for.. the carpet! Okay, Sophia did start munching on the corners of the walls... but still, it's usually for the carpet! I do have an extra $25.00 a month "pet rent" that I forgot to mention before. |
I lived in an apartment with Layla for 6 months. I bought the place instead of renting, but I did have to pay an extra fee for a pet with my first condo fee, and it was non-refundable. I think it was basically to cover any damage in the common areas. Layla was trained to go on a pee pad, which we kept in a plastic tray. She had one in the laundry room, and one on the balcony. It was actually against the rules to have pets use the balcony to go to the bathroom, but nobody really noticed Layla because we were on the third floor. I don't know if it would have been an issue anyway, since she went on a pad. |
There is no extra rent. I guess that's why it's non refundable. Thanks for the help :) its just a big decision, my babies are use to country living. |

If you don't use piddle pads, walking them all hours and in all kinds of weather can be a challenge. |

We live in NYC on the 28th floor of a high rise. Teddy is potty pad trained and outdoor trained...so basically if he doesn't go outside he will go inside on his potty pad. Being 28 floors high and having to take him outside every time he needs to go would ne a nightmare with the elevators. I think we were supposed to pay a non-refundable deposit to have a dog...but we got him after we moved in and haven't been charged yet. When we aren't home...we keep Teddy confined to 1 room...it is easier to manage incase he has an accident...we just got a second yorkie last week she is kept in an x-pen and potty pad trained. The biggest thing is I continuously am cleaning the floora...especially if they have an an accident because I do not want the floor to smell and them thinking it is ok to go someplace other than their potty pads. Apartment living is fine with two yorkies...as long as you figure out what works best for you. |

Oh...I have some diva's here as well..both male and female. I always tell them that they are sweet, but not so sweet that they will melt; but they don't want to hear it. If it rains during the night, they all sleep in because there is NO way they want to go outside. I swear it is a yorkie thing. |
I also live on a 3rd floor apartment and I had a chihuahua before I just got my Yorkie baby. I had to pay a $300 pet deposit and I have to pay an extra $10/mo for "pet rent". At this point I can't even remember if my deposit is refundable or not. I don't even care. Over the long term of my apartment stay, $300 is nothing to have my comapnions with me. My chihuahua will go down the steps and "go potty" and come right back up without me "taking" her. The baby however, has to be carried - up & down the steps. I don't mind it. Me, my boyfriend, and the kids all take turns with her, so I have a lot of help. |

Thanks all.. I would do it in a heartbeat if they used pads. But I don't want them to completely forget their potty training if they move and then I would have to retrain. Not sure yet, what I am going to do. I miss them so much but I need to make the best decision for them, whether that is here or my Mom's. |
We rent as well, but are fortunate enough to have plenty of grass around us. We had to pay a $200 non-refundable deposit for having a pet. I guess that covers the cleaning fee when we leave. Then I have to pay $25 per month on top of our rent for having a pet. Katie Scarlett is pad trained and it works great for us. It gets so cold here and I worry about taking her out in the cold and really windy weather we have. She will pee outside too though if we are out. |

I'm an in the back of the 5th floor of a building in DC. Riley is peepee pad trained and trained to go, outside. It works great for us. I have a doggie litter box with a peepee pad inside of it. My building charged $500.00 nonrefundable "Per Pet" and then it is $20 extra a month. I had a schipperke that passed back in June of 2010. I got Riley in July of 2010 and because it is "per pet", I had to pay "another" $500.00 nonrefundable deposit. The management company actually contacted me asking for it. I thought that was ridiculous and it burned me up for a while!! |
According to the LA Tenant and Landlord handbook (just do a google search), by law, all pet deposits MUST be refundable. However, if this is a pet FEE then it is not required. Do you remember if they said fee or deposit? I would suggest googling the handbook and reading it just so you're familiar and don't get kneed in the end. I also live in an apartment but I'm on the first floor. Is your balcony concrete? Wooden slates? What I've done is use something similar to the potty patch but it was left over "fake" lawn (looks very real!) from my folks and Zeus loves it. I've also put up lattice on the sides of the porch so he can't slip through. Have you ever heard of a catio? I am also in the process of creating one of those for my cat which will also benefit Zeus from going outside. It might also help you with bugs. Google that for ideas. I have a patio doogy door so building the catio is especially important for that. :) |

If it weren't for the fact that I am in a Prime Location here in DC I would already be Gone! |
We live in a 3rd floor apt. Princess uses pads & goes outdoors, too, but not often. I don't like that some people don't pick up after their pets then she's out there sniffing their business since they don't require proof of vacc. here. I paid a non-refundable $200 pet deposit & it's $20 a month for pet rent. The last 2 years that I've renewed my lease I've asked for a free carpet cleaning to 'negotiate' signing it. Princess did some damage to our venetian blinds as a pup-I wonder if I'll have to pay or it will come out of the deposit when we move. Seems like the $200 should cover it. I wanted to add that I let her on the balcony for fresh air, which she loves, but I have wood along the bottom to keep her from walking off, etc. She's now too big to fit through the rails but a small dog could. |

I used to live on the 21st floor, and I will never do that again! I now live on the second floor of a victorian condo building, our unit is privately rented to us by the owner. We have no fees for Harley, however that could be because my land lady has 6-7 cats of her own. I actually had to de-flea Harley cause I think he got fleas from her cats, or my neighbor's dog:eek:. it also helps that in Harley's room where his tray is, the hardwood floors were damaged by the previous tenant (wet newspapers). When she offered to fix them for us, I just told her not to cause at least if Harley makes a mistake I don't have to worry about it, she thought that was a fair deal (they got stained and need to be sanded down). But I do know that in my city other than the one high-rise I lived in previously rather than charging pet rent or extra fees, they just strictly do not allow dogs. :( hence the private rental we're now in and plan on staying in until we buy a house. |
We live in an apartment and we had $200 non refundable deposit... well we were supposed to but our landlord has 2 yorkies himself and did not make us pay lol gotta love other yorkie lovers ;). As for the carpet that sounds NUTS!!!! To me that's what the pet deposit should be for. |

I live on the third floor of an apartment with one Yorkie and one Whippet. They are both outdoor-trained. It's not too much of a hassle to take them out several times per day. I live with my younger brother, so someone is usually around to make sure they get plenty of chances to take them out throughout the day. Our apartment required a $400 total non-refundable fee. $300 for the first pet, and $100 for the second. I hate that it's non-refundable because my boys don't do anything damaging, but oh well. ;) |
