Bailey's Spay :/ Bailey is getting spayed today. I think i might be having a harder time that she is. I've been so sad all day, i cried for a bit when i dropped her off. I know this is for the best, but i feel terrible for doing this to her :(. She's having the laser surgery, and also she is getting the safest anesthesia. I wanted top of the line for my baby, b/c she is worth it. My mom is going to be picking her up this afternoon, I will be at work. I already can't wait to get off work and home to my babygirl. I'm wondering what i can expect now that she will be fixed. Bailey is a very active dog. She lives with 5 toy poodles, and so she is constantly running around playing with everything. This is going to be hard to not allow her to jump on things for the next 2 weeks. I'm going to have to make her sleep in her crate at night, so she doesn't jump off the bed throughout the night. It's going to break my heart. When I go to work, she usually stays in my mom's office (she works from home) with all the other dogs. But for the next 2 weeks, she is going to leave her in her crate and only take her out to go outside. My heart is already breaking for Bailey. She is not going to like this. Would it be a good idea to take her for a long walk since I can't allow her to run and jump around the house like she usually does? Is it true that dogs gain weight after being fixed? I really question this one b/c bailey is so active. Will her personality change any? I'm just not sure what to expect, I hope it's nothing drastic. I can't wait to have my little baby back in my arms, I miss her already! oh also, they will be sending her home with the cone for her head. Will she be able to eat with that thing on? or lay down? |
She will do fine. She may gain a little weight since she is still growing but if she is active she wont become overweight. I didnt like the cone but prefered putiing a baby onsie on. Two weeks will go by fast then you will be back to normal |
What size onesie should i get for her? she has a tail, so will that work? lol She is 8lbs, but she's a little long (maybe it's b/c of her tail). i was thinking of going to walmart now to buy her some chicken and rice to eat for a couple days, and i can get a onesie. I really don't like the idea of the cone either. |

Onesie would be great. You put it on the opposite you would a child. There are 3 snaps in the crotch area, snap to the two end one's and leave the third one unsnapped and pull her tail thru that. Now I had a 9lb girl at one time and the size I bought her was the 0-3 month old. You can probably try and judge the size by looking at them. |
Good luck at the vet today with your Bailey. Our Bailey was neutered about 5 minutes ago. The vet just called to say all went well. We get to pick him up this afternoon about 4:30! |
Hope both the Baileys do well. The onesies work great I used them on Bubba and Sissy. |
onesies are fabulous, I used them when Prada got spayed, and just bought a few more for my mom,her Ruby is getting spayed on Tuesday. sending good vibes for your girl.. hugs |
Oh my, I just called my vet and they don't do the laser and said that they keep the females overnight and that the vet checks on them throughout the night, not sure I believe that...now she won't be spayed for a few months now but I am already worrying about this.. Did any of your girls have to stay overnight with a typical spay? Yoshi got to come home that evening after his neutering... |
We dropped off Zoey for her spay around 8am and was able to pick her up later that afternoon around 4pm. |

EZ fix, go look for another vet. Also, your vet doesn't have to be the one doing the spay. Search online for vets near you who do laser those are the ones that tend to be more up to date. |
Don't they look so cute with their onesie on??? I love it!! Just remember she had surgery on her belly so don't pick her up from under the arms so that the belly stretches. Pick her up from under the butt...gently. Praying that she has a speedy recovery. |
With the type of surgery she is having I don't think it is going to take two weeks of confinement for her to recover. Gracie was very quiet the first two days but honestly acted totally normal after that. It would be very much harder on your little one to stay in a crate than to let her out and let her do what she feels up to doing. Gracie has pet steps to be able to get up and down off the bed but she still jumped up on the couch. There was just no stopping her and she did just fine. Animals just recover so much better and faster than humans. |
I am going to check into seeing another vet,,I just don't like the thought of her staying overnight, at least when she is here I know that she will have someone with her all night...Oh and I must find some cute onesies,,they are too cute anyway. Thanks everyone and so glad to hear that the spaying went well. |
Yes find another vet. Bailey is home and on my lap. He handled his neutering like a MAN, is pretty doped up, but doing fine. Look for references from other female dog owners and try their vet. |
Glad that your Baily is home and doing fine..as I said Yoshi, my Peke was neutered at 5 months, took him in a 8:30 and picked him up around 4:30..I was hoping this would work with Prissy too. |
Okay, thank you everyone for the comments! My mom picked up Bailey around 5 today and said that the vet walked her out in the lobby on her leash and she looked normal, just looking around. Mom brought her home and made her crate extra cozy and gave her a treat (which she didn't eat until I got home from work). When I got here, she sat up a bit and started wagging her tail. i took her out of the cage and she was loving on me and then laid down. I took her outside and let her go potty, then brought her back in. I bought a onesie for newborns, but it isn't long enough! So i'm thinking I'm going to go back and get the next size. I've caught her trying to lick a couple times but i said something then she stopped. But i'm scared she will start licking when i am sleeping and i won't hear her in time to stop it. She just seems very sleepy and sad. She's laying in her cage on top of my bed right next to me. I will be taking very good care of her. I'll be spending lots of time with her this weekend. I have noticed her wimpering a tiny bit when she moves around trying to get comfy in her cage. That breaks my heart. I wish it were me and not her. :( She is supposed to get her staples out in 2 weeks. So until then I do have to be sure she doesn't jump on and off any furniture. That will be the hard part b/c Bailey loves to play and run and jump around a lot. Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes!! I really appreciate it! |
So glad your lil girl did well and is back home with you.:) |
So glad that she is doing well. I have been doing some research and reading the vets opinions on laser surgery,,it is so confusing and contradicting..Glad I do have some time to do more research,,now how old is Baily again? She is one pretty girl..Well hecky dern all Yorkies are too stinking cute. |
Aww thank you! Yorkies are by far, the cutest around! Bailey is a year and a half! I really felt comfortable with the laser, and everything i read on it. It has a faster recovery time and there is less pain involved for them. The hardest part is keeping her calm for 2 weeks! It's only been one day, and already and i had to go buy her a cone for her head, b/c she keeps trying to lick, unless she's sleeping. And she HATES it!! It's huge! I'm about to look into the soft ones for her! Anyway, I hope you make the right decision for you baby! How old is he/she? |
So glad to hear everything went well. We had the laser done on Belle when she was spayed, and we were so happy with it. She was back to herself that evening, and hardly any discomfort. The hardest part was keeping her away from the staples once she saw them. |
Very happy to hear she's doing fine!:D |

Same here, she seems back to her happy little self today, BUT last night was horrible for me b/c I was up all night pretty much b/c i kept hearing and feeling her trying to lick. I am keeping her in her crate on my bed right next to me at night. But it was too much, i barely slept. So today i went to the vet and got the collar for her, but she hates it. It's like too big for her. She can barely move with it on! :( And this was all going on with the onesie that i bought for her :/ |
My husband and I didn't get much sleep either for two weeks waiting for the staples to be removed. I was able to be with her during the day and keep an eye on her, but it was hard at night. Hopefully she will get used to the cone. Or the staples. |
Prissy is only 16 weeks and I hope to have hers done around 6-7 months, so glad that your baby is doing well. |
Do they always have staples?? I swear all of this is so hard to deal with.. |
I'm not sure if it's staples always or maybe stitches sometimes. All i do know is...this is the hardest thing i've ever had to go through with Bailey. Not b/c of her recovery, she seems totally normal, she wants to run around and play, but i have to be keeping such a close eye on her. I am worried about when i have to go to work on monday. I mean my mom works from home, but she's not going to be able to keep an eye on her all day. And i'm just paranoid about her being able to lick at all, I can't imagine what will happen if it gets infected or she pulls one of the staples out! You would think they would have come up with something better than what they have now for their incision. I mean come on, it's already so expensive. Ugh, i'm just frustrated :( this is so stressful. |
I'm sure she will be fine. I remember Belle tugging at them a few times with her teeth, and I was afraid she would rip them out. But, she was fine. |

The vet told us that the skin on her tummy was too thin and wouldn't stay together using stitches. |
Very glad to read all went well. She should become more herself by tomorrow. |
