My Yorkie has droopy ears...does yours? My Yorkie has droopy ears, well ears that don't stand up straight. I have never seen droopy ears on any other yorkie. I thought maybe it was something that would develop with his age- he is nine months, pure bred- but they are still droopy. I don't mind of course- I think that they are beautiful, but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about yorkie's ears and could explain this to me. Check out the pictures at my gallery to see his cute little folded ears. |
brownies ears are flop down too when they were little they werent clipped thats usally what that means |
sirius's ears also flop down he is 7 wks. i was told that they would come up on their own. any truth in this. i thought of taping them now i am asking my vet. let you know what he says |
?? I don't think they cut yorkie's ears, they stand because they are taped up and then they stay that way, but I am pretty sure they are not clipped. Their tails get docked but that's it I think. Also, ears up or down is a preference, some people prefer them down, some up. I think it's cute either way. |
The ears usually are standing around 3 -6 months. Some just don't stand without help. You can tape them if you want them to stand. PS the ears do NOT get clipped. |
ears going downward The vet told me we could gently massage Bella's ears to help build up the cartilege. Altough he said some yorkies ears don't ever go up depending on heredity of the parents genes. I was wondering the same thing when Bella's ear bent down at eight weeks. They are starting to perk up at times at ten weeks but still go downward. My husband is teasing me that I spent so much on a purebred but got one with defective ears. I think she is adorable regardless! |
Gucci's ears are up. When I got her she was 12 weeks an her ears were up. They went down for a couples of days but then went up on there own. I never tape them or shave her hair. |
massage, trim, and massage some more! My Mason's ears finally went up when he was about 6 months. I had to make sure all the hair around his ears were clipped SHORT so that hair did not weigh down the ears. For about a month, one ear was up and the other was down (this was quite a funny sight :D ) so I kept massaging one ear. I have seen some yorkies with their ears flopped down and I think it's cute...but I read somewhere that dogs with ears flopped down are more prone to infections and ear mites. I also remember reading that when the dog is teething, the ears go up and down. On her website, Terry gives a great explanation on how to tape your baby's ears, if you want to. http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq2.htm Hope this helps! |
Gracie's ears started going up a few weeks ago...and then after a week went right back down! I keep massaging them but to no avail. I'm considering taping to see if that works! |
wow- Thanks for all the feedback. I will try massaging Loki's ears and trimming them- then we'll just see what happens. Is it really true that they are more prone to infections if their ears are droopy? That worries me if it is true. :( |
jackson's ears One was up and one was down. One night I took blue painters masking tape and folded the ear vertically in half. Don't do it too tight and make sure you leave excess so you can remove it WITHOUT a scissor! He wore it for one night and the next morning I removed it and it was standing up! Never had to do it again. :animal-sm |
i love toby's floppy ears..... if i taped them i am sure they would go up because it was almost there at one point in time, thank gawd they stayed floppy :p |
One of my yorkies, (Chloe) ears do not stand . I have read that some yorkies ears are just too big and the muscles behind the ear to make them stand are not strong enough. |
Esme's ears The first time I saw Esme at the breeders, her ears were floppy. The breeder taped them up right then and a week later when I went back to pick her up, they were standing straight up. A little tape works miracles! |
Our Magic ears stood up from the day we got her...but Sailors ears don't and never have....to us it is not that big of a deal... we shave off the top to help but we are just going to let what happens happen...either way they are so cute!!! |
My breeder said that when Fred was born, she already knew they were going to stand. Well, 9 weeks later..what do you know, they are perky and tall! She did put tape on them for a day or two because she said she had to tape his litter sibling's ears up and she didn't want him to feel left out! :p |
My Piper had similar ears and was the cutest little dog I have ever seen. In fact, I loved his appearance so much that my next Yorkie will also have what I called "flop down" ears. If I knew how to insert a photo in this message, you would see what I mean! |
Chachi' mom's ears never came up either. Also there was a yorkie at the vet today that ears were floppy. You can try taping them. Me personally I think they look adorable with floppy ears!!! |
My little yorkie has floopy ears. I think it makes them much cuter. We call the personality ears LOL |
Tia's ears are floppy, not sure they will ever come up. I have taped them once but she destroyed the tape, so I'm not sure I will do that again. Either way, she's adorable ;) |
Hi all so great to hear that there are other yorkies out there with droopy ears. We have decided to keep them the way they are- we love them, and him just as he is. Thanks again for all the feedback- i feel so much better. :) |
Ears @ Attention! My Artie's ears stay up, my Breeder told me it is a lack of calcium in his system. You should make sure that his hair on his ears are clipped/shaved if not the hair weighs it down. Their actual ears are not clipped, but their tails are docked. Based on the AKC. standards their ears are supposed to be standing, most Breeders tape them for about 2 weeks with masking tape. I guess it's Personal preferrence? |
As a breeder, I have decided there is no rhyme or reason to Yorkies ears. The breed standard calls for prick ears and that is my personal preference. I have not had a puppy/dog whose ears did not stand. Part of that could be luck.I keep the hair clippered(I think that is what was meant earlier by "clipped" ears) from about 2-3 weeks of age. I also tape ears if they appear weak; occasionally, use a bridge;I massage but in a specific manner; but, if a puppy's ears were up for the period between 2-6 weeks(approx.) they will come back up if they fall. Stressors cause the ears to droop-changes in life, diet, home, teething, sickness, vaccines and so on. I love massaging them and watching the puppies relax and enjoy being cuddled. Serves more purposes than just helping the ears to stand. Some people use tampons in the ears with the ears shaped and taped around them. I don't. The site mentioned above Alex's FAQ's is always a helpful site fior a lot of things. |

Sprocket's ears were floppy but around 5 months slowly started having less amout flopping untill one day they were straight up. Katie's have been up since 2 months old. Neither of them needed tape. I actually thought the floppy was cuter but the expression in their eyes is priceless... :D |
It is true that dogs with floppy ears are more prone to ear infections and mites. The reason is because when the ears are flopped over its a good place for bacteria to grow..there is no light getting to the ears and it trapped warmth and moisture therefore resulting in infections. They have this problem a lot with Cocker Spaniels. I am dealing with an ear infection at the moment because Gracie's ears have yet to stand therefore trapping moisture in her eyes. The vet said plucking the ear hair that grow inside will help and also tipping the ears about 1/3 of the way down the ear...your groomer if you have one usually does this until your Yorkie is about 6 months because according to them after 6 months they just wont stand...I dont know how true that is. I have also heard that sometimes the base of the ear is too wide and therefore your Yorkie will never physically be capable of having standing ears :) |

I could not agree more!! I think the floppy eras are just adorable, it makes the yorkies keep that "teddybear" look!!! I only want floppy ears for our yorkies- in fact, I wish there was a way to KEEP the ears from standing up!!! :) |
I Have 9 Yorkies. And 3 Of Them Have Droppy Ears. But The All Are Beatiful. Some People Like The Ears Up Some Like Them Down. Doesnt Matter To Me I Just Love My Yorkie Babies. |
More Calcium in their Diet? I just came from the Groomer's yesterday and she saw my new female "Abigail" who is going on 9 weeks old (this coming Monday). She said that shaving the ear has nothing to do with the ears. She said I need to feed her "Cottage Cheese" or use a "Calcium Supplement" if she didn't eat it? Or a high Calcium cheese? Due to the fact that any calcium in her Diet was going to go towards building her bones and growing in her baby teeth! I do prefer her ears to be standing, sorry but I agree with the Standard for this Breed! And my male Artie's ears were already standing when I purchased him @ 20 weeks old. so I did not have to deal with this. I'm not going to bother with taping unless the don't stand by a certain time frame? I will just wait and see? Hopefully Mother Nature will take care of it? |
I have seen pups that had ears up at 8 weeks and the hair not removed regularly. They fall from the weight of the hair. After shaving they came right back up a year later. |
