sleeping in my bed,ok? Hi my 11 week old yorkie meesha will only sleep in my bed... i have a few beds for her, she'll sleep in them throughout the day, but as soon as i go to go to sleep in my bed she cries to get up. I tryed waiting to see if she'd stop crying one night, she didn't and attempted to run and jump and try to climb... now i don't mind her sleeping with me, but she'll wake me up in the night if she needs to go to her pee pads, ...so i haven't been getting a good nights sleep. My father is building her a ramp with carpet so she can come and go, but for now i have big pillows all around my bed in case she falls out, she'll not fall far, onto them. Is this normal? LOL, i had a sheltie before and he never slept in the bed or ever wanted to.... is it safe?or should i try to train her to sleep in her own bed until she gets older?just wondeirng if it is normal for an 11 week old puppy to sleep in my bed, or is this developing a bad habit for her? |
Both of my girls sleep in my bed. I have one on each side of me. :D But I love it. My only concern is the age of your baby. I got Rosie at 6 months and Mikki at one year so neither one of my girls were little pups. I do have stairs so my girls can get up and down on the bed. Maybe someone that had younger pups can give you better advice. Good luck! |
She's a little young to expect her to stay in her bed unless she's in a crate. We got Gracie at 15 weeks and put her in a small crate (soft bed, blankie) on a chair right next to the bed where she could see me. She settled down fine. The very few times she whimpered, I just tapped the crate and she'd settle down, but I never made a fuss so as not to reward her behavior. Eventually, we moved her into a bigger crate on the floor not right next to the bed. Your baby will still may wake you to go potty, though. Gracie was able to go 8 hours so could wait until about 5:30 or 6 AM, which wasn't too bad. Eventually she started sleeping in our bed at about 6 months because I was out of town for a couple of nights and my DH felt sorry for her! There was no putting her back in the crate after that! But your baby's young enough, you can probably get her comfortable in a crate in a couple of days. Good luck. |
awwwww!! thats so cute they sleep on both sides of you haha,n ya katirob maybe i'll try a crate for bed time until she gets a bit older, not sure how she'll do with that, but won't hurt to try, i'll have to go shopping for one after xmas, thanks for the help:)this site's been such a help to me:) |
When Callie was a puppy she slept in a crate at night until she was potty trained and it made me feel she was safer. Maybe you should crate her at night. Yes she will cry and bark for you to let her out but after a while of you only letting her out to take her potty and right back in the crate she will get the hang of it. |
Yeah, we had problems with peeing on the bed when ours was a pup (her, not me :p), so she started out in a playpen with a crate and had to earn her way onto the bed. Works out great, now. I don't let her sleep under the covers, though. |
ZoE has slept in my bed since she was 6 weeks & 3days old (she just turned one year old this month). She's never had a potty accident on my bed and has always woken me up when she's needed to go pee in the night...although she has puked on my bed before. |
Our yorkies sleep with us. Our senior boy, Rocco prefers to sleep in his bed right next to us, but both Marlee, and her son, Rocco sleep under the covers with us. When Marlee started labor, we laid under my covers and I could feel her contractions! |
My Romeo has only slept in his crate the first night I brought him home (at 12 weeks old). He was such a tiny pup that I just felt badly leaving him in a crate while I slept in my bed so the second night I put his bed on the floor right next to my bed. Needless to say I was up all night checking on him. So after maybe a week or two of this I moved him up to my bed and 2 1/2 years later that's where he sleeps. I have noticed however that most nights he likes to catch a couple hours sleep in the living room (guess Romeo needs alone time) and around 1 or 2 am he'll make his way into my room so that I could put him on the bed. The wonderful thing about letting Romeo sleep on my bed -- if I wanted to sleep late on weekends he would too -- the little boy will sleep a solid 12 hours on the bed as long as I am there with him!!! |
My first puppy slept in bed with me from 8 weeks on... she also would wake me for potty breaks, but then that stopped as she was able to wait till morning. Just once they start sleeping in your bed, it's very hard to change your mind! |
I tried to crate Princess for one night & caved.:p:rolleyes: She was almost 10 wks. old. She slept in my bed for about a year but now roams about the hall & bathroom (beds in both) & sleeps there. I think she would sleep with me but I sleep with the fan on high, though faced away from me, but I think she's too cold. My bed is low & I had blankets & pillows around it while she was young but she never left it without my help. I think it's a matter of preference & what you feel comfortable with. |
Ella has slept in our bed since the first night we got her. We tries gating her off in the bathroom which you can see from my bed it's literally right there... She cried and barked for about 2 hrS and since we lived in a different apartment then and had very rude neighbors underneath us, we caved and put her in the bed with us. She will put herself on our bed using her stairs about an hour before we go to bed and will sleep until after we are up and ready for work!! She is lazy:) |
Gracie slept with me from the first night. I have to admit I have never crate trained. Back when I was growing up it was unheard of. Either you confined you pup in the kitchen or you tied it up out back. Well, the kitchen thing was fine during the day when no one could watch the pup but no one wanted to hear a puppy crying all night in the kitchen so I was the one who usually had the puppy in my bed. I have to say the invention of puppy pee pads is a great improvement over the newspaper thing. Gracie almost always slept all night when she was a puppy and when she did wake up I would put her on the pee pad and we went back to bed. She now has pet steps so she gets up and down off the bed as she pleases. One side of my bed is against the wall and I blocked her from getting to the other side. I put one of those body pillows along the edge of the bed where it was up against the wall to make sure she wouldn't slip down off the edge. I'd guess more than half the people on YT let their dogs sleep with them while the rest prefer not to have their dogs in the bed. Our family always trained our dogs to have run of the house. Even when I worked outside the home our dog had run of the house once he was house trained. He stayed in the kitchen when we were not home until he was totally trust worthy. |
ya gracielove, i have my bed against the wall with a body pillow too!, and then pillows all over the floor by the bed, just in case, i never tryed the crate thing before, our sheltie was gated in the kitchen then when he got out of the little puppy stage he had the run of the house. Yorkies seem to be more needy and want to be close at all times, so the sleeping in the bed thing is a first, i just wasnt sure if shes too young, might give the crate try a go until shes a little bigger?..,but it breaks my heart when she cries. she likes to sleep in the comfortor or on my arm,lol ... hmm i'm torn on what i should do, just keep letting her sleep with me or try a crate, i worry about her not being able to breathe under the comfortor, i don't move in my sleep so i know i'm not going to squish her, i sometimes wonder what will happen if she falls on a pillow on my floor from out of my bed, i'm always so worried about her lol i guess i'll get more comfortable as she gets older and get to know her better, i'm just glad she dosen't potty in my bed and wakes me up to go to her pee pad LOL |

Even if she likes to be covered, try to get her on top of a little blanket. It will be much easier to slide the blanket if you need to move her at night. and also to find her! |
All three dogs sleep in bed with us. The big guys get off sometimes and I will find them on the bathroom tile..i guess they get hot? Remy sleeps on one of our pillows or under the covers..she is the first dog we have that sleeps under the covers! She has been sleeping with us from day one. I have had other dogs that were crated or slept in beds in our room. The fur babies do wake me, they move around a bit, and I dont get as solid of sleep...but it is what it is! I love the sunggles and puppy kisses and so does dh! |
i think its too late for meesha, shes hooked with sleeping in my bed, i tryed to keep her in a crate beside my bed and she cried sooo much it broke my heart, plus gave me even less sleep LOL, i was out with friends the other night and got my father to come watch her for me, well her internal bedtime clock went off and she cried to him to get up in my bed, he had to lay down in my bed with her until i got home LOL, guess i'll get my father to finish building that yorkie ramp for my bed lol thanks for letting me know eveyone your opinion on them sleeping in the bed with you, i never had a dog want to sleep in my bed, so was just getting some imput, i shulda started meesha sooner, but shes persistant in getting what she wants, it killed me to her her cry to get up in my bed |
Buster ( Boo for short ) has slept on my bed along with her sister Lucy my Bichon Frise from day one, he was 8 weeks old when we got him with no problems :) |
Mine sleep in their own beds. Here's the deal, I don't`thinin my situation it's tjhe safest thing for them, I have a super tall bed, we roll and there just isn't enough room. Whatever you do though you will have to stick with it being forever pretty much. A dog can go from crate to bed or their bed to your bed, but to do the reverse will be both problematic and hard for them & you. So if you don't want her in your bed for life stop doing it now do the her bed or crate training now and stick to it, no breaking down, no caving in in do it and mean it and make it the routine pattern-eventually she'll be secure in there and comfortable, but any caving/irregularity will be confusing and cause whining at night-or make future attempts so so so much harder. My first dog as an adult slept under my bed, wow trying to crate train after that was horrific! Epic failure on my part! |
Gizmo sleeps on his cloud 9 in our bed...Don't know how we all fit. But we tried to crate train and after two weeks of only 3 hours of sleep per night (this was during the week of our wedding also) I finally caved, brought him up in bed, and he's been there ever since. No accidents, and he usually wakes us up if he needs to go potty. |

We attempted to have Lola sleep in her own bed for the first few months... but somehow she has ended up sleeping with us:rolleyes: |

Sigh, the brat has us wrapped around his little paw:rolleyes: Then to top it all off, I'll get ready for work early in the morning and come into the bedroom to find my husband has dragged the cloud 9 bed up on my side and him and Gizmo are cuddled up together with Gizmo's head on my pillow and under all of the covers:rolleyes: |

Sophie Kate sleeps in our bed now but when she was a puppy she slept in her crate in my guest room. She had to earn the right to sleep in the big bed and that included being able to hold her potty needs to morning. I will add she wakes me up every morning at 6:00 am or around that time, regardless of the day, weather or how late I stayed out the night before. Now the bed is more hers and the cat, they just allow us to sleep in it at night. |

i think its fine & they need to be close to you, & be warm, its just their lovable nature. sounds like your taking precautions with preventing falling & making it easy for your pup to get in & out of bed. i would put a pee pad in your room @ night & maybe remove it in am & use outdoors or your regular pee area. during the day. they love routine, & they are very smart., hopefully would catch on quick this is where i pee @ night & maybe you will get some sleep. good luck!!! |
Both my boys sleep with me, in fact it's hard for me to sleep without them touching me, lol. I think its alright if your furbaby sleeps with ya!! |
Jackson has slept in my bed since he was very young. All of our family dogs have always slept in our bed. My childhood GSD slept with me, our Golden Retriever with my dad, my aunts Pittie, etc, etc. We are a family of suckers and the dogs know it. ;) |
