What startles your Yorkie? So lately around 8pm nap time our Dexter is napping beside me on the couch on his back with his paws up sound asleep, and hear hears something, creek in the floor, one of our cabinets in the kitchen and he jumps up and barks, I say it's ok and hold him and he goes back to sleep. Is he sleepwalking or what? |
I think it is their protective behavior - Jack does the same thing if he hears something out of the norm.... |
My two get startled sometimes when they are sound asleep. Maggie will wake up barking, lol. No idea what she's barking at but will sound ferocious, lol It could be something as simple as hearing the garbage truck coming down the road or the neighbor yelling in the backyard. |
Petrified of a tape gun! |
Princess is scared of me opening plastic bags, hairdryer, vaccum & seeing me touch one of her towels or shampoo. Haha. And she's still scared to come into the bathroom if the water's running even though I haven't bathed her in there in months. She's very territorial (go figure:p) so I don't know if she barks at others outside or near our car out of fear or toughness. |
The girls hear EVERYTHING! Most household noises they are used to...Bentley, our new boy...is startled by EVERYTHING!! haven't even had him a week yet...gonna vacuum this morning...not sure how he's going to react to this one...I'm sure it isn't going to be good! |
Prissy is only startled by loud cars..I am so afraid she will be a gear head like my husband. LOL |
Callie is scared of the vacuum and broom. |
Ella is always startled by the sprinklers at my apartment at 8:30 every night!! She will growl and bark at them. Also the vacuum and anything someone is holding that is bigger than her like my fiancée was holding his big hunting boots and walking towards her and she freaked out! |
EVERYTHING startles Max! But, he is especially afraid of lemons. I let him smell a lemon once and since then he runs every time he sees them. He only gets scared after it's sliced. A whole lemon is fine:D Cooper gets startled when Max barks too loud:rolleyes: |
Holly is terrified of my daughters zu zu (sp?) pets. They are tiny like a rat but if she sees it she runs to hide. It is so funny bc she is 7 pounds and will growl at our neighbors dog like she is a 100 pound dog but you put that zuzu pet out and she is gone! |
The only thing that seems to spook Roxy is light reflections on windows and sometimes shadows. The shadow fear was far worse when she was a pup, and still learning about the world, but not near as much now that she's all grown up. ;-) |
Jackson cannot stand the oven. He slinks around the corner and peeks around watching us, because my mom has set the smoke alarm off twice in the past 6 months while cooking lol. So he automatically assumes oven = loud noisy smoke detector going off. He does not like fly swatters. Even when he sees a bug on the floor, and thinks I am going to kill it, he slowly slinks away all scared. :( I always feel so bad for him, because these are things that aren't going to hurt him, and I have no idea why he's afraid of fly swatters, it's not like he has ever even came remotely close to being hit with anything in his life. Poor fella. Oh, gunshots and fireworks and VERY loud thunder... he's under the bed. regular storms and light thunder does not bother him. |
Oh, some of these are just too funny! lol Brody was afraid of thunder and lightening when we first got him and we had some the first day he was with us so he was already unsettled when the thunder started. He started to head for the bathroom...he was kept in a bathroom most of the day at his previous home...but I called him and told him it was okay, and cuddled him all night and now he is not bothered by it. However, since we got Mia, she sets Brody off because she barks for any noise...she was alone most of the day at her previous home, too. They are both calming back down and will quit barking if you act as excited as them to have heard the noise, too, and tell them it is OK or ENOUGH....GOOD...and NO if they persist in barking or 'huffing' after knowing they should quiet down. Brody is a bit more laid back and 'toddler-like' than Mia, but when Mia instructs him to, he gets up on his little male Yorkie high horse ready to 'kill' whatever Mia says he should. Today, it was a bird hollering incessantly that Brody objected to..and then Mia started 'huffing' because Brody found a monster ! lol Both babies are very brave and investigative, but will jump and shy at plenty of things, including a crinkly bag that did not just come home with Our Mommy or Our Daddy. lol They basically seem to be very 'strong' when 'protecting' us from anything they think is 'dangerous' at all...inclulding our kitties, but very spooky about protecting themselves. - Cat |
Sunny doesnt seem to be bothered by anything. We havent experienced thunderstorms yet. The only thing that seems to somewhat bother her is a motorcycle...the deep rumble of a Harley somewhat bothers her, but she doesnt go run and hide. Bobbi |
Apparently, a ham bone is pretty scary ! Brody is standing in the kitchen, wagging his tail and barking at a ham bone put down for the kitties. If the bone wobbles, he jumps back and barks, wagging his tail. If we bring him out of the kitchen, he runs back to bark at the bone, and if we shut the (rarely closed) full-length glass bi-fold door, he whines and scratches at it to get back into the kitchen to bark at the bone. Mia thought the bone was cool and nibbled at...or the ham left on it as a treat, and one of the 13-year-old cats is just looking at Brody trying to figure out what planet he is from that he does not find a ham bone impressive ! :D From the living room, even the closed bi-fold door...safe at close up distances...deserves to be barked at, too. I've not yet decided if Brody is playing a Yorkie practical joke on us...or having a Yorkie mental breakdown. :D - Cat |
1 Attachment(s) UPDATE: The ham bone is safe to nibble on as long as Our Mommy or Our Daddy stands in the kitchen! Problem solved...sort of...:D - Cat |
1 Attachment(s) Our Mommy is a little slow, but she 'gets it' eventually. We wuf Our Mommy/Adjustable Bone Holder...:D Brody and Mia |
My little ones can hear the bus or garbage truck as soon as it turns down out street and that gets them every time. They are so funny - and think they are so tough! |
Taz does the same thing. He is more quicker to bark at unusual noises and even some people. But I love that though. We stay home a lot together and a lot of the time it's just Taz and I so when he does hear a strange noise I love that he barks to alert me of anyone or anything! You gotta just love your protective pooch! |
door bell (even on the tvs) birds in their yard dishwasher going from rinse to full wash cycle |
Cody is a weird little guy. He's not really freaked out by anything. He likes to investigate loud sounds, but he doesn't bark or get scared. He actually likes the blowdryer, and he couldn't care less about the vacuum. (He's the only animal I've ever had who wasn't afraid of the vacuum. I find it odd, actually. But good!) In fact, the only time we hear him bark is when he wants to play with the cats and they aren't interested. Otherwise he's all mellow, all the time. |
Oh! Also the sound of the shower curtain being pulled back...they all run like H311! LoL Once they hear the shower going (with someone in it) they slowly look around and crawl out of hiding...isn't it amazing how they can hear and know when someone has stepped in the shower by the sound of the water hitting off someone before the shower floor? |

I can't even watch Wheel of Fortune anymore!! The doorbell sound on this show puts Jax into a barking frenzy and running to the front door. Don't know how he equates the front door with the doorbell as we never use the front door, only the side and back doors. Also, he was disturbed and perturbed by the face of a snowman on one of the gift bags under our Christmas tree. Kept barking at it. |
Maggie gets extremely startled when she's laying on her daddy's lap and his cell phone rings. She flies off his lap and onto the floor so fast! The phone literally just starts to ring and she's gone! lol |
Gizmo will bark at my husband to get his attention to play...And he'll keep barking, and barking, and barking, so one day my husband looked at him and did this realy loud, "Woof! Woof! Woof!" And Gizmo went a flying through the house and then flying back and hid behind me. |
EVERYTHING startles my Fletcher. I literally mean EVERYTHING! Poor little guy is a nervous wreck! Dexter could care less about anything if he's comfy for the most part. Fletcher freaks if I sneeze. He HATES it and runs away from me. LOL funny from the dog who sneezes 500x a day! LOL |
Winston is startled by his own farts...literally! |
Tonight I was reminded of another one. Roxy doesn't like spooky movies. The music & sound affects get to her and she will leave the room every time. Ohhh, and I love ghost stories. Groannnn! |
