New Yorkie. HELP Hi guys, This is my first time owning a pet and i just got my 3 month old yorkie yesterday. When he got home yesterday, he didn't do anything but to sleep on his bed, and today he was abit playful in the morning but he didnt seem to be interested in toys or even treats,he hardly even eats his food. Is it normal for him to do this?What can i do to help him to get more excited?He hasn't barked since i met him yesterday, is that normal? Thanks! |
It was normal for both of mine. It will take a few days before he feels like being himself. Just give him sometime and he will come around. The vet told me it could take up to 15 days or so before you see their personality come out. Congrats on your new fur baby! |
I don't think it is normal. His blood sugar may be getting low? do you have nutrical or corn syrup? Put a dab on your finger and let him lick it off. Low blood sugar can be very dangerous. Please take him to get checked by your vet if you are worried. It is ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry. Good luck to you and please let us know how he is doing. |

Hi. Congrats on your new baby. Has he had a wellness check yet at the vet and overall health confirmed? If not, I would start there. It is really recommended you take you pup to the vet within a day of two of purchase to have an overall wellness check. If you've already done that, wonderful. I would then give your vet a follow-up call and let him know of the behavior. Perhaps he/she would like to see him again, try a little Nutrical, or just give it time, but I would leave that decision up to the DVM that evaluated him. It does take them a while to acclamate to a new home, but with his young age I would consult a vet to be safe. |

congrats on your new baby. my cedric was the same when we got him home. it took a couple of days. he slept alot! he is still a picky eater. there are mornings he will eat like a champ and others like this morning he wanted nothing to do with breakfast. i leave a small amount of hard food for him to nibble on so that i know its there if he feels like eating. you should bring him to your vet though asap for a wellness as suggested above....just to insure he is doing ok all around. good luck. and welcome to YT. |
Thanks alot guys for the reply!i have actually replied all your posts but for some reason they didnt get posted. I think i'll bring him to a vet to make sure because from what i heard yorkies are supposed to be playful,right?What else should i be aware of while raising him? Thanks |

My Yorkies were very playful when they were puppies....then they'd tire themselves out and nap. Trust your instinct on this. Also, make sure you ask about low blood sugar and get some nutrical from your vet. |

he will be playful he just needs to adust to his new home. watch for baby teeth not falling out when the adult teeth come in. that is the only thing that i have had out of the norm with my baby. and you have to watch the things you give for treats. non fatty good wholesome made in usa things. i give wellness and tast of the wild. i make a lot of there treats as well cause i want to know what he is eating. i also do the occasional treat of cottage cheese with apple sauce. a table spoon of each. i also make him sweet potato with plain tuna and a lil cheese. he loves that and i dont do that all them time just here and there to mix it up as he is such a picky eater. and i would get stairs for him so that he can go up and down the furniture bed....etc without hurting any limbs. amazon has good prices for doggie stairs. |
We try to get down on the floor (actually lay down) with our new pups- we must seem like scary giants to them at first, after they get older they know "people flat on floor" is free for all fun, but at first try to be very gentle, calm and make coo/whisper noises. |
Congrats on your Yorkie and yes they are very playful. I am glad that he will be seeing the vet..I brought Prissy home just short of 8 weeks, she was quiet the first half of the day and then she was as playful as could be and a good eater..I was lucky since she was so young.. Yes the stickies are so informative and I read everything that I can find and am still learning. |
It will probably take him a little while to get used to his surroundings some pups are more hyper then others. Callie wasn't much into treats when we first got her either, sometimes they can be picky about there foods and treats. If he isn't eating I would get some nutrical to make sure his blood sugar isn't going down. When you get a new puppy you should take them to the vet for a check up and such anyway so you could always ask the vet about it when you do that. |
Congrats on the new addition, you have come to the right place for all your questions, the people here are wonderful and we all share the same love for our own fur-kids in addition to the breed itself. When my baby came home for the first time 5 years ago he slept a lot ate very little and mostly followed me around until he got use to the surroundings and my different commands, voice tones as I began to teach him where he could and could not go and what is allowed as opposed to what it not allowed. Relax... very normal behaviour. Remember he is a young puppy and needs A LOT of sleep. Seems normal for this breed to be picky eaters, too. Oz hardly ate anything when we first got him. He still has a sparse appetite; he's a nibbler rather than a gobbler! Your pup needs time to feel comfortable in his new surroundings and needs time to build trust with his new family. You were ready for this - he was not! His whole world is different. He needs to learn new rules and lots of new smells. Give him space and time and love. |

thanks alot guys, i called the vet he said he is just nervous and shouldnt be worried about it, actually he is getting so much better. I was just sitting on my chair and he suddenly tried to reach me and he just chilled on my lap. Then i decided to put him down to see whether he really wanted to be with me or no and yes after 2 mins being down he tried to reach me again and hes now on my lap. Im so happy! |

Once again i dont know why my post wasnt posted. he was actually vet checked on Monday,and he was scheduled to come back next month for his booster, examination and consultation. Sorry,im unfamiliar with Nutrical,what are they? |

Hi & Welcome!! :) With respect to your question, if he isn't eating much I would give him a little nutrical. When Teddy was a puppy he was very tiny and I gave him a little bit of nutrical everyday...especially the days when he wasn't eating much. I wish you lots of luck with your new puppy!! I don't get the whole nutrical push. I understand why you should have it on hand, especially with very small yorkie pups, but I don't believe it should be given if not needed. Brakbrak...I'd ask your vet whether he/she believes nutrical is needed for your puppy. While I've had nutrical on hand when I got each of my pups, neither of them had issues with low blood sugar, so I have never had need to use it. |
