First Post, excited about new mixed breed puppy (Morkie) 3 Attachment(s) Been stalking this forum for awhile to gain information regarding yorkies since my new baby's dad is a Yorkie, her mom is a maltese this is a whoops breeding and I am paying less then any local humane society (the girl adopted the mom pregnant from a breeder that didn't want her anymore and did not want to deal with an unwanted litter). She is the only blonde in her litter (2 sisters tan, 2 tri color boy and girl) and she is currently 6 weeks old we do not have her yet, but I may get her way too young because of the girl who has her mom wants them gone before christmas, yes I know the bad I have rescued and fostered, I have also spoke to my vet. I am most likely picking her up on friday, she has a appt with my vet sat. morning ( he goes out of town till jan 3rd and it was important to me that he sees her first. I am very scared of getting her so young but i also have a maltese breeder on speed dial that said she would help me. We are prepped with belongings for her, vet appt. dietary needs, playpen ect. Regardless of her beginning she will be loved and worshiped like the diva I am sure she will become. I also have 2 purebred English Mastiffs 4 yr old akc brat, and the 10 year old a rescue. They are very used to toy dog because we puppy sit family dogs, 1 was a 8 lb chihuahua ( zoomer passed), 1 a 7lb papion that they have been around since he was 2 lbs and a shih tzu rescue that we fostered when he was 3 lbs till 9 lbs. here are some pics I have received of her, I have met her once she is 1.5 hrs away from me. --to the mods, if this is a repost please delete the first I know it has to be reviewed by the mod. but I couldn't find a pending post in my acct. the first post i tried was from my phone. |
oh she is precious!! good luck bringing her home sounds like you are well prepared! |
Question regarding her nose; was wondering about her nose it is lighter then her brother and sisters ( theirs are black) hers is more liver but darkening. I know some yorkie genes carry this trait but can not find a maltese gene that would allow this. I know her mom is akc maltese. |
Such a cute baby! Just a reminder... it is COLD so be sure to keep her warm, she is very young. If you do not already have some you might want to get Nutracal or Karo syrup just incase her bloodsugar starts to drop from the stress of leaving mommy. Also be sure you know where and have the number of your local doggie ER incase there is a problem in the first few days, sense your vet is going out of town. |

Still nervous, even though I keep double checking everything, she is gaining weight and doing great right now. Any opinions on puppy grass, our winters are nasty here and my mother in law love hers for her papion. |
Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk. That's so young to pick her up, I know that people who get them before 12 weeks complain about housebreaking and biting more. A good mama will start the beginnings of housebreaking with a puppy and she will also teach bite inhibition. Do they even have teeth at that age? Too bad the foster mother gave up so early, a few weeks could even make a difference. I wonder if your dogs will be able to socialize regarding biting inhibition. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck and I pray all of them will find great homes. |

Thank all of you for your insight and support, I have never done this with a furbutt that is going to be mine (only as a foster before) |
I know some states have laws about how young a puppy can be sold. Does anyone know the law for Ohio? |

Is someone going to be available during the day so that she can be kept on frequent feedings and watched for hypoglycemia? I am a little concerned this person is not keeping them at least until 8 to 10 weeks (really it should be at least 12). They are not even on kibble yet. I'm sure since you have fostered before you are also concerned about all of this. I love mastiffs; have a friend w a beautiful girl, but I have to admit I am also concerned about such large dogs w such a tiny pup. Unintentional accidents can happen to the best of ppl. Hate to sound like a mother hen, but I hope you are there during the day providing 24 hour supervision. Sounds like you will have your hands full for Christmas this year. :) |

I would not bring her into my house if I believed she could be in any danger. |
Welcome and best of luck with your puppy. It sounds like she will be very lucky having you as her mom. If you are talking about the fake grass, pup grass, I have what I think is called the mini pup grass. It has a tray that you put a pee pad in it or newpaper and then the grass mat that goes on top. My 6 month old pup uses it and took to it very easily. I wanted him to be able to have a place to go for this winter in case we get lots of snow. I think it is great. |
Very cute! Good luck with her. Sounds like you are well prepared and have knowledge and experience. I hope it works out well for you. A few years back, people used to rehome puppies at 6-8 weeks, so is she is healthy and you stay on top of things, I'm sure she will be fine. My son has a Morkie and loves her like no other. She's a very good little dog. We have 2 Yorkies and 1 Maltese and they are all good dogs. I am sure she will be a good dog for you. No doubt she will be loved and spoiled! |
I have offered to foster the litter. The answer is always no. I am very concerned about the other babies. I am going into this with eyes wide open, I know it will be very hard and tiring but she is worth it. Thanks for the reply about puppy grass that is what I was looking at, with our bad winters I think it looks like the best option. Any opinions on Bailey vs Peyton for a name? Also the nose thing is very odd to me she is the only one with this coloring. If any one else has a yorkie/maltese that has similar coloring when a baby, I would love to see some more grown up pics. |
Welcome to you and baby girl...hoping all goes well for you & baby |

sounds like you know what you are doing so i just wanted to wish you lots of luck and blessings bringing the little dear home and loving her. too bad you can't take em' all in and good luck with the gentle giants. my friend has two douge de bourdoux (spelling) and they are amazing with her array of boston terriers, chinese cresteds, silky terriers, and other small breeds she's rescued. they really are amazing dogs despite they are big but soo soo gentle with babies. |

Welcome to YT! |
I'm glad you are a work at home mom. You would be surprised some ppl come on w a new pup, younger than 8-9 wks, and work a 12 hour day and the dog is home alone. I had hoped w your fostering background that was not the case but had to ask. Also, we recently had a member who I think the world of whose child accidently stepped on a small dog. With the best of intentions and the most wonderful good-hearted ppl, accidents can happen. I wish you well. You will be one busy lady this Christmas season with your daughter this new fur-newborn! You will have to post pics - as you can probably tell, we love pics. Quote:

Congrat on your new baby:) I have brought home a kitten that was less then 3 wks old (her mommy passed away) so I know how scary it can be but it sounds like you are prepared:) I use potty pads when its cold and snowy and it seems to work out fine for us. I know yorkies noses are so pose to be black but not sure about the other breed. I'm sure I'll be crucified for sayng this but I believe that 8 weeks old is an appropriate age to leave momma. At 8 weeks, the puppy will start bonding either with dogs or humans and personally I want my babies to bond with me:) Sorry but I have to disagree with a few people~She should have all (or most) of her teeth by 6 weeks of age, and they should have been started on food by now. I know some people will start feeding mush at 3-4 weeks and as they get teeth, transition them from mush to kibble. I have a litter that will be 7 weeks old tomorrow and I started them on mush at 5 weeks and haven't' softened their kibble in over a week. |
Adorable!!!!! It has been a long time since I have had a puppy but never one that young. Sounds like you are experienced and prepared. Best Wishes and I can't wait to see pictures as she grows. |
I love Bailey's Irish cream and with Christmas; I do believe her name will be Bailey. Thank of of you for the warm welcomes and great advice and concerns. |

Actually most vets believe that they are old enough to go at 6 to 8wks...the same with puppy shots starting at 6 wks...If i never learn another thing here I have learned not to give shots this early to small yorkies, i believe some vets lump them all together no matter what size they are, and i believe smaller breeds need different guidelines to go by...I have raised 6 & 7 wk babies but feel they would have been better with their moms.. |
I think it def sounds like your doing all you can in this sad situation. I just hope the other puppies get homes as good as yours and that know the needs and are willing to everything that can! She looks like she's going to be a tan/creme combo and a li'l more yorkie looking pup. I'm excited to see a picture of her months from now! Way too cute... goodluck!! |
She is a beautiful little puppy. You have so much experience and knowledge and you are home all day long to take care of this new puppy. This is going to be a very lucky little baby. I like the name Bailey . SHe is going to be so much fun, but a lot of work. I thought her siblings were also very cute, I hope they will be ok, and also go to experienced owners. |
What a beautiful little pup you have coming to your home. You surely will have your hands full, but by the sounds of things she couldn't be going to a better home. I wish you well during this adventure. |
Bailey's coming home tonight...nervous, excited, I feel just like before I gave birth to my oldest daughter. Well wish us luck, and naps because I know I will have zero sleep for awhile. As soon as I can I will post plenty of pics ; probably even too many ;-) |
