I use certified organic baby food in the small jars, won't touch the non organic. Sweet potato, green beans, peas, brown rice and grean beans, etc. When using the jars, i keep them 4 days in the fridge then throw away. You can also buy some organic sweet potatos, bake them, remove the skin then run them in your food processor, then freeze small portions. I recently started to do that with organic green beans, peas, and sweet potato, cheaper for sure and you can control how much you use and not have to throw some away! The kids love it too :thumbup:

Perfect! That is the same I use! Now that I think of it that is how my SIl made her my nieces baby food!! I don't have a food processor- I will keep using the baby food till then! I am so happy I found something that works and is healthy!!

my canine cardiologist felt that even the best baby foods were still too high in sodium for my now deceased whippet, so I shy away from them. Crazy, huh ?

Crazy b/c I didnt know that 'organic' doesnt automatically imply 'healthy' i.e. low sodium or low sugar

I've given these to fosters over the years that come to me in bad shape. It's easy on the tummy before I switch them over to home cooked food. There isn't enough garlic in these to harm a fly. I even throw about 12 whole garlic cloves into the rice & pearled barley when I cook it up to add to their meat and veggie mix, but I discard the garlic cloves after the rice & barley have cooked. The oil from the garlic are the only thing needed anyway. I've never had a problem with this method, even on all the fosters that have come to me very sick. (It's one of the holistic and safer ways to combat insects and fleas) They do excellent when I put them on my home cooking, but I start out sometimes (depending on how sick they are) with baby food, especially with the seniors.

You don't need a food processor, a potato masher would do as well, and if you don't have one of those a fork will do. :p Don't know if you're on a budget, but baby food is expensive, and you're paying a premium for the convenience. By the way, canned pumpkin could work too, just don't use the kind that's mixed with sugar and other ingrediants. You can freeze in small amounts and thaw as necessary. Most dogs love it.

Ya I guess I can chop it or mash it myself- its not money that is the issue its doing what is healhy for my baby esp because this is going to be long term! Maybe I will try to buy a sweet potato and it myself- is it like cooking a regular potato? Also what kind of canned pumpkin?

Every time I make a salad and takes it upon himself to sit right under my feet in hopes that he can catch a falling carrot!

Noah was on a baby food only diet for a while after he got out of the hospital. We use the Beechnut brand, it was the only one I found that didn't have other stuff mixed in with it. I buy it on sale for .44 cents a jar.

All 3 dogs get the turkey and chicken as a treat with their meals ocassionally and I give them green beans, squash and sweet potato baby food with their evening meal (a spoonful in each bowl) One jar of green beans will last them 3-4 days.

Yup, you don't have to use a food processor, a blender works also, especially on baked sweet potatos. They generally take longer than a regular russet potato. When i make mine, I use 350 for heat and on the larger ones its about 45-55 minutes, when you check it, you will see oozing out of the poke holes you put in it, i let mine get really soft so they mash nicely.After it cools i just scoop all the potato off the skin (they don't get any, but i love the skin so i eat it, yum)

I use Libby's but they do sell organic canned pumpkin. It's nice to have on hand because pumpkin is recommended for diarrhea and constipation, so if your dog has either of these, it corrects itself, without causing the other extreme.

I make broccoli and mash it. The problem is to make it soft enough to mash you are cooking all of the nutrients out of it anyway. I have used the food processer for sweet potatoes

Got it- thank u for the info! I'm def going to try it.. I do have 2 more jars of the baby food and want to use those before I start something new!!

Great!! I heard pumpkin is good for them- I think Pnut will like it too- he is into the more sweeter things- he spits out carrots, I don't blame him, my carrots have to be covered in ranch!! Lol

Pumpkin isn't all that sweet, you put of sugar in it to make pumpkin pie. I think it tastes a little like sweet potatoes.

LoL Yes they can, but they are so cute they can get away with it. Sometimes when I am eating carrots and ranch- Peanut will act like he wants some, so I will give him a piece of carrot, in the mouth, then right back out. Then I will trick him and put a little ranch on it, in the mouth, back out with no ranch LOL!
