question should I breed or not
 

I have 2 great guys one is not fixed and I have a friend that has a female. I would love to have another yorkie but not sure if I want to breed him for that reason. Right now I dont want to pay alot for one. I was told it could change my little guy behaviour if I do. What do you all think?

My vote is NOT! Seriously, we have so many unwanted dogs in this country, they only people who should be breeding are those who are persevering the breed, and only the best examples of the breed should be bred. Unfortunately, during hard times, good breeders cut back, but byb's come out of the woodwork to make a little money, and this is very bad for the breed. Good breeders say it takes years to learn how to be a good breeder and investing in the right dogs to breed is not cheap. Also you have to invest in whelping supplies and important testing, to make sure the dogs aren't passing a genetic illness. For females there's always a risk of needing Cesarean as well, which is very costly. My advice is to go to shows, and learn about the breed, before you start to breed, you need to be aware of all the illnesses that are associated with the breed and how to avoid them. By the way, your male will change once you breed him, they’ll be more problems with aggression and marking, he will also be more interested in sex than anything else. You’ll little boy will become a “man”!

Also, I'm not being judgemental, I thought about breeding Joey, (he's perfect) but as I researched I learned that this was one of the stupidest thoughts I'd ever had! :D There are also many dogs in rescue, and we have a rehoming forum. There are so many dogs that need a good home.

Breeding a litter is not cheaper than just buying a puppy. The female must be in top notch health and kept that way...as well as the male. There are vet visits after birth and then tail docking and dewclaws. And, if something goes wrong, the cost rises dramatically. Plus, what about the rest of the litter?

Breeding can change a male's behavior. But, just being in tact will do that. I recommend having him neutered. It will help with any current or future aggression or marking behaviors and eliminate the risk of testicular cancer.

I also agree with the previous poster. There's plenty of dogs that need good homes and plenty of excellent breeders already out there.

Good luck with that here in Michigan. We don't have alot to choose from, unless you're really not bothered with "yorkie" looking like a yorkie, so unless you're ok with a really old, or extremely large or mixed yorkie, we don't have much available. One of my good friends is actively involved in a local rescue and said that many of the more desireable small dogs that they do get in are transferred (exchanged for cash) with other rescues in areas where they get more $$ for them...California being at the top of the list. This supposedly helps our locals rescue with the funds needed to save more dogs.

Why dont you try fostering. I am loving it. Molly is such a joy to have and when the time comes for her to go to her fur ever home, yes I will miss her and be sad, but I know she will be the best that she can be because her and I worked so hard at it. If you foster and you decide you want to keep the baby, you can : ) Just a thought

I'm remembering just a few months ago you were thinking of rehoming one of your boys (thread is here somewhere). You had changed your mind. However, I'm just wondering why you would want to add another so soon. I would alter your boy, love him as a pet, work on training, and forget about anymore dogs until you can go a few years without thinking the ones you have aren't too much for you.

It is not as harmless as many people think to keep a male un-neutered. A male dog can smell the scent of an female in heat for miles away. The need to mate does effect the male dog. It causes them to try to get away to meet that natural need. The male will have a lot of pent up sexual aggression that can come out in other ways. Do your dog a favor and get him neutered so he can live a calm peaceful life. You don't need another puppy producer. You need a calm and loving pet. Neuter him so he can live a peaceful life.

I understand that your post is showcasing what is commonly thought out there; how-ever more research is in, and the spay/neuter question is not so black and white. In particular what is coming to the fore is that neutering does not help with aggression in fact the reverse seems to be noticed.

My vote is don't breed or buy or even rescue any pups at all - ever. Sorry to be harsh, but someone who was willing to give up a puppy because he MIGHT be 10lbs versus 5 is not fit to own even one, in my opinion. Does this ring a bell?

Honestly, if you could consider selling a pup due to size, what's to stop you from abandoning a rescue pup that doesn't meet your coloring expectations, or personality wishes?
