Help... I want to get a Yorkie Could any one give me suggestions on buying my first Yorkie puppy. I am overwhelmed with the many different layers of buying from breeders, pet stores, etc!! I also can not spend $1000+ and wondered if there are yorkies available for less? |
i got toby for $500..... what you need to do is look for BREEDERS AND NOT PETSTORES, if you buy from a petstore chances are that the puppy will not be true to the breed, it could be inbred, and it could be REALLY sick.... i cant stress this enough DO NOT BUY FROM A PETSTORE, besides, they 'inflate' prices anyway....... you want to do youre research thoroughly, look online and see if the breeder you chose has a bad rap (a lot of them do, this could mean the difference between a healthy pup and a sick one).... if you are not planning to show, i would suggest that you ask for a 'pet quality' pup, these are generally cheaper because they do not have papers, they might be larger or smaller than the standard, and floppy ears, different coat texture, ect.... if you get lucky make sure they have a health guarantee, if they dont you are taking a real gamble |
I have been looking for a while and all of the breeders around my area are asking at least $1000.00. I wanted a smaller yorkie but I don't care about the ears or it being of show quality. I am just frustrated that it is this hard to get the puppy I have always wanted without spending a ridiculous amount of money!! |
I would also suggest trying to stay away from ordering them online and having them shipped to you. Some of the breeders online might have things to hide and take advantage of the fact that you are distant from them, plus you can't go visit the parents or what not. It's better to be safe than sorry! I've heard about so many people getting jipped, even after doing research on an online breeder. Suffice to say, try to stay away from "teacup"s and "tiny"s. I learned all of this on Yorkietalk.com! If you browse around, there's alot to learn and watch out for before buying a yorkie. Oh! Have you tried looking through your local newspaper? Where are you from? |
I have recently learned a lot about online breeders good and bad. That is why I really want to get a Yorkie from a breeder near by. I have even been looking at shelters and found the cutiest Yorkie mix but because he was only three pounds and I have a four year old I would not even be considered which is really upsetting. I live in Rochester, NY and all of the local ads ask for at least a grand or more. I am having no luck!! |
YORKIE PUPS 2 Males born 12/13/04 AKC registered & first shots. $850. I'm definately not familiar with New York and how far everything is. I'm just trying to help ya! :p I'm browsing all these Classifieds in New York and all I can find are just $1,500.00 yorkies. I'm not sure if it's the "economy" or the living style but jeez, thats a lot. You can find Yorkies for $375 - 500 in Texas! |
That is exaclty what I am talking about!! I really can only afford at the most $500.00. I just wish there was someone around here that wasn't trying to get rich but who really wanted there puppies to go to a good home. Thanks for the info though!! Too bad I didn't live in Texas!! |
Consider looking outside your immediate area.....all I have ever heard was yorkies in the NY area are EXPENSIVE!!!!! Do you have any family that live in another state but still a bit close by????Maybe you could find a puppy near them and they could drive 1/2 way with it for you!!!! Or just find one and drive for a day to get it....spend the night and love on your new puppy...then drive home.....and it you find one in a really great location you could take a little 'vacation'.... ........DUH.....just bought an expensive puppy = no vacation this year!!!!!!!!! |
I have been looking close by... but again I have only found high priced puppies. If you know of any reasonable breeders please let me know I would not mind taking a drive to get my puppy that is definetly not out of the question!! Thanks for the suggestion. |
My little girl is 6 hours south of me, in the same state though. I'm thinking I might try and meet the breeder half way, although,I really want to see where she lives and the other puppies. I searched for about three weeks until I came across her. Check your local veternarian clinic, sometimes people know people. Also, if you have a local newspaper where you might be able to advertise for free, then I would submit an ad in the paper, stating exactly what you're looking for. Also state that you don't want to show, or breed or whatever, that's really important. I'm picking up my little girl for $750. Where are you located in NY? I'm pretty good at finding things on-line, maybe I can help you?? I know how hard it is. :) |
DUH... I just saw that you're from Rochester. I have family up there. I'll look online for you, and see what I can come up with. Go to your local vet though, I bet they can help you out. Or, you can place a "want ad" on the wall there. |
I am in Rochester, NY about 2 hours from Buffalo. I would appreciate any suggestions. My price range is a little lower so I think that is why it is much harder for me to find a puppy in this area!! Thanks again. |
Free older yorkies If you go to *********.com, there is a thread there about a breeder who is giving away two good quality older yorkies, I believe that they are females, the woman's name is Tiffany, and I think that her website is ashmoreyorkies.com. All she wants is shipping costs, this is a very reputable breeder, not puppies, but very pretty yorkies. Check out the forum ********* and you will see the thread. If I could talk my landlord into it, I would take them. I think that she wants them to stay together. I thik that they are 4-5 years old, small too. i got my first yorkie when he was 4 and he was a perfect little yorkie. |
Thank you I have emailed that breeder for info. Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone for your help. |
Hi, I'm from Syracuse, NY. We just got a yorkie for $600 from a breeder in Hannibal (near Oswego). Go to www.syracuse.com and search the classifieds. Last time I checked there were a bunch of yorkies in there for under $1000 (at least 3 different breeders). Just go to all classifieds, then pets, then type in yorkie. Good Luck!! |
I know the breeder in Hannibal, in fact, she is coming to my house this weekend to use Mick as a stud. She has no yorkies available at this time. I sent the following to you earlier, did you happen to call any of the ads. http://classifieds.democratandchroni...list=yorkshire "Get Rich", yeah right, with all of that is involved in raising a healthy litter of puppies, breaking even is barely attained. |

I did try to call the one that had them for $400.00. But of course neither of the two numbers worked???? I am telling you this is one hard search. I am willing to wait though so hopefully I will get lucky! Quote:

That is where I started (Shelters) I found many there but they will not consider me because I have a four year old. This is what is frustrating because I would definitely adopt from a shelter but they have stricter rules when it comes to children. Quote:

When I bought my first yorkie I remember saving for a long time. It took a while but I put a little aside each week until I got enough. I'll keep on the lookout and let you know if I find anything. |
I tried looking for u because i know how it feels to want one of these babies. I waited almost a year and then my mom got one for me. Here are 2 places that u could look. I dont know how far they are but I put in your zip code and it gave me these 2...the pups I think are like $650, I know its a little more than u want to spend, but maybe if u save a little more, then u could get one. Try them and tell me if they are ok. Here they are: http://www.breeders.net/breeder/144955 http://www.breeders.net/breeder/134715 |
Thanks again for all of your hard work in helping me find my yorkie. I really appreciate the support. I will consider saving up for a while and just waiting while I search for a yorkie that might be priced around my range. Please still give me ideas or information if you do see one for a little less!!! Thanks again everyone. I just had to mention this... I decided to check out Wizard of Claws to see how expensive their Yorkies were and they had one on there for $10,000!!! How is that possible and do people really pay this much for them???? That just seems out of control... am I right??? |
Wizard of Claws is BAD NEWS - do NOT buy from them even if they ever do have something in your price range. If you decide to buy from an ad you see online, run the name of the breeder and the kennel name through at least three different search engines and see if any complaints show up. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=Wizard+Claws |
I live in NYC, don't go with those breeders, it could be a bad situation. I am a new member here and a new yorkie mommie. I got my yorkie after tons of research, emails and conversations and finally went with Laura at Honey Creek Kennels. It's actually not a kennel but a home and she is very good with providing info and pictures before they come and she takes nice care of the doggies. She had given me a delivery date for my pup and then extended the date an extra 3 weeks because she didn't feel he was ready to go. She only has a few litters per year. I would recommend her highly. |
Forgot to give price I paid $1525 including airfare and all current shots, wormers, food and crate, plus she threw in a nice blankie |
I know how you feel amp... I live in Utica, and have run into the same things you are encountering. Last summer, when I began to seriously research breeders I planned to spend around $700, but now I'm thinking it's going to be more like $1,000. It was so frustrating, but I just started saving as I was researching the breed and now have enough money to get the dog. I'm actually traveling to NJ this weekend to look at some puppies because I've found a really nice woman. I've called some of the listings in our local paper, but I feel like I know more than some of the breeders I've called (and since I've only seriously researched the breed for about a year, that is not a good thing!!) I'm not sure what you have already, but I've found that you need to actually add between $50-$100 onto the price of the dog for puppy supplies like food, dishes, chew toys, crate, etc. Good luck with your search, and be persistent. Your hard work will pay off soon! |
You live near me Hi! You live within driving distance of me. So I would feel bad if I didn't recomend the breeder that I got Syd from. She was $850...if you want a male they are $50-$100 cheaper. She is AKC and she has a beautiful face. She came to me 100% healthy...no worms, fleas, or problems of any kind. This breeder has 2 breeding mothers who are sisters. The other one is in heat now and being bred. The breeder is a friend of the family and I know she takes VERY good care of her mothers and the puppies. Let me know if you are interested. |
Maybe you can try finding a breeder you feel comfortable with and put a deposit on a future litter this way it give you time to save a lil bit more. Thats what i did. im picking up my lil girl on the 28th just in time for my birthday. I to had a hard time finding one in a price range I felt comfortable with. I also had to consider all the supplies I needed to have on hand as well. So it worked out well cause now i have all the essentials ready and was able to buy it all a bit at a time as to not have to buy all at once. just an idea hope I was able to help a bit. sue |
Also, if you talk to a breeder and they really like you and how you act with the puppies, they might knock down the price a bit. Tristan's breeder knocked $200 off the price than they told us over the phone when they realized that we're a good dog family (we trained guide dogs, researched the health risks and sizes of Yorkies, did some temperament tests on the puppies, etc) |
