Yorkie or Rabbit?
 

:idontknow Romeo loves to eat vegetables. Most days I think I have a rabbit instead of a Yorkie. Does anyone else have a Yorkie/Yorkies that love vegetables?

Mine love cooked vegetables not raw ones. They love a good homemade vegetable soup. We had that last night

Ziva likes vegetables, but to many give her a belly ache!

What a handsome little boy Romeo is!! And YES, I have a Yorkie/rabbit too. Rocco hears the cutting board come out and he's at my feet in a split second...he especially loves carrots and red peppers. I stopped giving him celery because I have to pick the strings out of his little teeth after! :p

You just made me laugh because I was thinking that maybe I gave Romeo the bad habit of eating raw vegetables. Sounds like Rocco and he share the same habits. Romeo's vet approves of his diet and even tells me that Romeo "eats better than he and is healthier".

P.S. Rocco is quite handsome too!

I used cold carrots for teethers for all of mine when they were pups but they seem toloose interest in them as they get older. Wish mine ate veggies better raw. They will always eat cooked carrots and blanched green beans!

My DIL is a vegetarian and she has two poodles who LOVE veggies and fruit. She gives them fresh veggies and fruit every day and they just eat it up! Her poodles are also the best behaved and smartest dogs I have ever come across while still being as loving as my yorkies. I adore my yorkies but they have never amazed me with their intelligence like her poodles do. So... are fresh fruit and veggies brain food? Or is she just better at training!? Probably the latter.

Yep, our Harry loves his veggies! I home cook for him (apart from having his kibble down to free-feed on). Every day he has peas, carrots, sweetcorn + green beans in with his meat or chicken plus sweet potatoes and rice. My daughter reckons he eats better than she does!! :drool: Sally + Harry x

When Beamer knows I am getting him and LilBit a carrot out of the refrigerator he will scratch at the door as I am opening it and then scratch at the drawer the carrots are in, seems I cannot open the door fast enough for him.
Also when Bruce is peeling potatoes if any peel drops onto the floor Beamer is right there to grab it. We try and grab it before Beamer does as potato peel is bad for dogs. But sometimes he beats us to it.

I'm so happy that Wendell loves his fruits and vegetables. Current favorite is Avocados, but he also likes sweet potatoes, green beans(if ground in the blender), peas, apples, oranges, carrots, even brussels sprouts if I cut them up small enough. But after reading the other posts, I'm going to offer him some celery and some of my favorite Wolfgang Puck's barley/vegetable soup.

Thanks everyone for responding! I was beginning to think I was a bad mom because I feed Romeo what many would consider "human" food but I see many of you do the same. My boy will eat veggies, fruits, cereal and ice cream and even ICE. He also loves home-cooked steaks, chicken, salmon and tuna. What us moms won't do for our babies!!!!

If French Fries Count then Troy is all Rabbit! :) But in all honesty I think he rather have meat, chicken, beef, shrimp and anything that's junk food related.

Troy has great taste!! Romeo likes his french fries with ketchup... that plus some cherry icee from BK and he's a happy camper.

Ahi loves her fruits and veggies. :D She esp. loves the treats that Rachel makes. :) Oh yeah and she loves ice pops too. No dog biscuits for this pup. lol

Gizmo just likes apples. Never really tried carrots. He does like to play with lettuce leafs though. :p

To Gizmo's Mom... I find that lettuce leaves and spinach are difficult for Romeo to chew. I use romaine lettuce and give him the "crunchy bit in the middle of the leaf" and I eat the leaf. Give that a try and see if Gizmo likes it. Romeo loves green beans but every time he ate he regurgitated it -- it's the only vegetable so far that does not "digest"

Sophie loves raw carrots. I use them as her chew toy all the time....she does a little dance when she sees carrots in m hands.

She also loves raw green beans and freeze dried sweet potato. She typically chooses veggies over normal dog treats...which is fine by me, she has tons of allergies.

On the other hand....she loooooooves McDonald's fries. She will rip open the bag just to get to them...but she isn't like that with any other type of fry. She only gets about an inch of one once in awhile, and we wipe off the salt.

Cody loves veggies --cooked. Celery, carrots, zuchinni. Once when Cody was little -- about 10 mo old. We had a little cocktail party. We gave him a raw carrot (part of a veggie tray). Apparently other guests gave Cody carrots too. At 2:30 a.m., Cody was barking and waking us up to go out -- to get rid of the carrots. Needless to say, what came out of him was orange -- no more raw carrots!!

Yes all 4 of mine like veggies raw, cooked. Even dried in the food dehydrator the Sweet Potato stays rubbery and they love that, cut like french fries. Steamed green beans and brocoli are a big favorite.

Gracie loves all veggies and fruits. Since it is apple picking season she has been really enjoying fresh apples. I sometimes give her a big carrot to chew on when we are temporarily out of bully sticks. She will bite into the carrot but not tear it apart. It must be good for her teeth. I don't give her large amounts of fruits and veggies. Just some snacks.

Winston loves sweet potatoes, green beans raw. I bake the potatoes in the micro give him half, mashed and save the other half for lated.

My Nicknack is pretty much a hoover!! He loves it when I cook, he sits there waiting for stuff to hit the deck!! Sometimes he can get stuff before I can even think to bend over to pick it up, lol.:aimeeyork

How cute is that! I haven't gave Katie Scarlett any veggies yet, but would like to try that in the future to see what she'd like.

LOL when I saw the title to your thread Yorkie or Rabbit, I thought someone was making comment on your little one, you know Yorkie or rabbit? Cause I have this very elderly gentleman that lives where we walk all the time and thinks Sprocket is a cat on a leash LOL, so we get the nice cat comment, guy can't hardly see, but is very nice. And Sprocket is part cat when he plays in my yarn :p. Truthfully, Sprocket won't eat veggies hardly at all, so picky, oh well.

"Taxlady" your response has me rolling on the floor. Too funny your elderly neighbor thinks Sprocket is a cat!!!

On my way home I saw a lady walking a Yorkie and my first response was "Oh my, that baby needs some food he is so tiny the squirrels are bigger than he". Romeo eats like a rabbit and run likes one too!

One caution I'd throw in about people food is to be careful of the amount. Since yorkies are so tiny, they do not eat much i the course of a day. If you fill them up on people food, they might not eat their dog food which, hopefully is one of the premium brands that contains a good mixture of ALL the nutrients he needs.

You would be surprised how little it takes to fill them to the point they don't want their dog food. I was anyway. Too many treats was a problem for us. I have to break treats into tiny pieces so they can still have several a day but not ruin their appetite for good dog food.

I don't give mine much in the way of people food. Vegetables here and there are not a problem, and a tiny nibble of meat on occasion, the last little 1/2 teaspoon of ice cream from my bowl, 1 chip broken in a few pieces one in a blue moon, but not much more than that. Never a daily sort of thing -- more like a very occasional treat. That way they don't expect it, fill up on it, or try to wait out their dog food for something they like better. Just something to think about.

(PS -- Pls don't think badly. I know potato chips are terrible foods for them but like I said, I might break up one chip in several pieces once every 2-3 months. I RARELY eat chips. But when my son is home, I will have them around the house and partake a little myself on occasion. Ice cream is my vice and I have it often. I don't give them anything resembling a serving. But Annie knows the last bite is hers. When she hears scraping on the bottom of the bowl she comes running and stares patiently until I give her that last tiny dab. I don;t think such tiny amounts will ever hurt them. But some make sure to never give them these types of food and that is a good idea too. The main thing is to not interfere with their regular diet of dog food or home-cooked balanced diet regimen.)

It's good to read through several lists in case there are foods that don't make all the lists. It also reinforces them in your memory. I have a magnet made by one of our Yorkietalk members who sent it in my gift exchange, I think, that lists foods poisonous to our dogs. I keep that right on the fridge and have referred to it several times.
