| Should I still give Heartguard and Frontline in winter? I was just wondering,I have been giving Max Heartguard and Frontline every month,as directed,by his vet.I am out of medication, and,I was just wondering, should I even bother giving it to him in the colder months? He rarely goes out when it's cold, because he hates cold weather.Would it be okay to stop giving him the treatments in the winter, and start up again when it gets warmer and he goes out more? Not sure what to do,is it safe to start and stop medication?

| Heartworm prevention should be given year-round. Flea prevention is more of an optional thing. If you stop it and see fleas, then you'll need to start it up again.

| I would not stop giving heartguard in the winter. Frontline is really kind of up to you.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | One of our members who lives in Canada stopped it in the winter and her dog got heartworm. You'd think Canadians would be safe in the winter! I wouldn't stop it, but if you do, make sure you get another heartworm test before you restart it again. I didn't know we had the skull icons, those are cute!

| I was just at our vet's office yesterday because yikes Trixie had two fleas on her!! We got AdvantixII flea preventative (because I didn't want to give it to her since she is usually only in my yard ) and asked about stopping it during the winter...... Our vet said that it has been a horrible flea season with even indoor only pets getting fleas and to call in December to see if the area is still having a flea problem. So, I would call your vet's office and see how bad the fleas are in your area. As far as the heartworm preventative is concerned.....I would give it year round.

| I agree with what everyone else has said... Keep the heartworm preventative up, but decide for yourself about flea prevention. If you see fleas, you can just get them back on it.

| as a person who has worked for a vet you ALWAYS give a monthly heartworm pill. never ever ever stop it as long as the dog is healthy. it will save lives and make sure your pet doesn't need over 900 in heartworm treatment if they ever got them. getting rid of heartworms is a long and painful process full of horrible weeks of bed rest and medicines and sometimes ends up killing the dog esp little dogs. they can't run or play and have to lie still and let the worms die and go through their blood stream. if they move too much they can go to their lungs and kill them as they are dying off. it's really an awful process and i've seen too many poor dogs have to be put to sleep or die from treatments. just give that heartworm pill year round. flea and tick you can skip as soon as you get a couple hard freezes and start up at first sign of spring. |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Well I'm new at all of this, but we went for our first vet appointment Friday and my vet recommended both year round. So we took our first heartguard today. I got a coupon to receive the first dose of Frontline for free and am mailing that in to start that.

I was reading your post and came across that last line and started laughing - it was so randomly thrown out there. LOL

| Thank You for all your responses.I think I will definetly keep giving Max the heartguard, like so many have said.I also think that I will stop the Frontline until the warmer weather comes, and,if I see fleas,I will Immediately start him on it again.I definetly don't want to cut corners on Max's health,he's my buddy and I want him to live a long time!Thanx for your great responses!
