dog eats mulch This summer Pippin started to chew and eat small rocks. I raked up all the rocks and replaced them with mulch. Now he eats the mulch. He is never left alone when he's outside. I follow him around, but he'll decided to grab a piece of bark and take off. He'll hurry and chew it so I won't take it away. I've tried putting a muzzle on him, but if I do he won't move or go potty. I checked the brand of mulch. It's Scotts Natures Scapes. I read it isn't poisonous to dogs but I don't want him ingesting a piece of bark. I read to replace it with shredded pine. What if he still eats that? Is there anything I can spray on the mulch so he won't want to eat it? It's about 10 bags of mulch so a bottle of bitter apple wouldn't go far. I am at my wits end. I don't want him to get sick. I do take treats and if he grabs a piece I've tried calling him for a treat, but he'll wolf down the bark and then come for the treat. Do you have any suggestions? |
I thought I was the only person in the world with a pup that eats mulch!!! One of my fosters does that. I hope someone does have a solution because it makes me crazy, too! |

Have you tried possibly putting a little fence around the bark so he can't get into it?? Like the little white fence you put around a flower bed. I'm not sure how big he is, but if he's little he probably can't jump over it. Just a thought. |

Mine jumps the fencing...and I hate the way it looks anyway. :( He need to be adopted by someone with a concrete yard. :D |
Unless its coco mulch its not toxic but Id be concerned about blockages. This summer we found an alternative to mulch at our local nursery. It is called sedum sod and it is a plant that you buy in like a square and you just place them where you want and they grow into the dirt. They are colorful too with shades of green, yellow and red. Some people put them on top of their roof to keep their roof cool. They are also drought resistant so they dont require alot of watering in fact I didnt water mine all year and they are thriving. We plan on putting it in several places in our yard |

I have a mulch muncher too! And leaves, and sticks (and pom poms off blankies) :D |
My 4 love to eat the cones that fall from the pine trees. I always find small pieces all over the house. You can imagine where the rest are. LOL |
Buster likes the pieces of bark that comes with the mulch and they both will eat the acorns if I'm not watching. If a pine tree has been cut, they will eat the clippings from that if they can. They used to eat the worms that would crawl onto the sidewak and dry up. |
I have one that eats leaves and just about anything else you can think of. Irritates the crap out of me! Seems he has been pretty close to obstructing over his habits. Anyway, I'll be ordering a basket muzzle soon (have you tried this instead of a nylon muzzle?). Also, how many minutes did you give for him to move around and go potty before deciding he can't be muzzled? I'd think just pick a nice day, muzzle him, carry him outside, and sit there for an hour until he decides that he isn't going to win this one. A gentle leader might work. You can pull their faces up quickly that way. |
I'm just so happy that I am not alone!! :) |

I keep thinking I'm the most horrible owner for letting this happen, but there is just no way to stop him unless I lock him in a crate all day (and even then if there is anything sitting neck to it, he pulls it throw the bars and eats it). He likes to lay on his blanket but pull Ellie's through the bars and chew on it. lol. Pesky little brother. |
