Bitter Sweet - Getting a puppy

The thread is titled bitter sweet because I am overjoy that I'm getting a puppy but I have to keep it from friends and family for now. Its such exciting news I want to share it with the ones I love, however I don't want to hear their comments because the minute anyone hears how expensive yorkies are or there's talk about them being pure bred, you have those individuals that judge you.

Is it such a terrible thing that you want to spend your hard earn money on a puppy, even when the price is high?? And I know a lot of dogs in the shelter need adopting, but is it wrong with my desire to raise a puppy? Has anyone else dealt with this?

No, it is not wrong to spend your money on something you want. To tell you the truth, if I had known how much I would spend getting Copper, I probably would have thought about it a little more. The breeder was a friend of mine and said she would give me a good deal. It wasn't as good a deal as I thought it was going to be. By the time I fell in love with Copper and was committed...the deal ended up about $1500. Way more than I ever thought I would spend on a dog.

After being on yorkietalk for almost 2 years now, I feel like I'm a little more educated on yorkies and realize that they do cost this much and occasionally more. I would do it again in a heartbeat if I could get my hubby to agree to two dogs. And it isn't about the money.

I say go for it. It is nobody's business how much you paid for your dog. Tell them you "got a deal!" :D

I am in the same boat as you! I pick up little Zhoe tomorow and very few people know Im getting her. Only a close friends knows how much she cost. Honestly, its none of their business. I agree with citygirl123, getting all of her things she will need to come home is adding up big time! maybe I could have waited , and planned a little better. At the end of the day they are our babies and there is nothing anyone can do to change that. My husband tried to give me a hard time about shopping for her but I told him everyone has their thing they are into, and mine is Zhoe. You spend thousands of dollars on Simone ( his car) and I dont say a peep.

I'm sorry that you have friends and/or family that would judge you based on what you would pay for something that you will love and will love you back unconditionally. First I want to say welcome to YT. :) Second don't worry what other will think. This is for you not them. Third, you came to the right place for info. and support. :D

My hubby to this day doesn't know what I paid for our little Ahi. He knows it was a lot but he doesn't care. She makes our whole family happy and complete. Our family members adore her and don't care if we paid 10,000 or got her free. I hope your family and friends will see how loving and adorable you little one will be instead of $$ or status. In most situations that will be the case. They fall in love with their cute little faces right off.

Good luck with your search for a Yorkie pup and please read up for info. on here and most of all please do your breeder research.

Really, it is no one's business what you spend. You just want a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder - that is the important thing.

I have learned so much from YT through the years and glad you have this time while you are waiting to learn.

Oh, and also want to say - welcome to YorkieTalk! :)

I had the same family reaction to me buying George. I put the end to it by saying to my husband who is a musician that he would spend thousands for a guitar that would say look no different to me then the one that cost a few hundred and same with a car to me they are just a mode of transportation can't
see why some are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars when they all do the same thing get you from point A to B. Finally made him realize its all relative and a dog is not just a dog .:D

jeane 10-21-2011 04:25 AM

i agree/ i got the same thing when I bought morgan. He is the love of my life. he is priceless. My family thinks that I am stupid for spending that much but it is none of their business.

tinalove 10-21-2011 05:19 AM

Don't discuss with them how much you spent. When I got my bichon the only person in my family that actually knows how much she cost is my daughter and that's because she was with me. She will be with me when I get my yorkie too. I know she knows not to discuss my financial affairs with other family members. It's my money I am spending and it is my business.

chachi 10-21-2011 05:26 AM

Exactly dont discuss how much you spent. Just say something like not enough for the love I get back if asked. It is no ones business how much you spent or if you adopted from a breeder. Now I believe in all the good work rescues and shelters do and I believe we should support them but it doesnt necessarily mean everyone needs to adopt from them to me. People for a variety of reasons want to adopt a puppy and I think everyone should be able to experience the joys of having a new puppy at least once. Later on in life when they want to adopt another they may decide they dont want to go through puppyhood again and want to adopt an adult and go through a shelter or rescue and thats great for them and great for dog.

Hey!
I'd say as long as it's your money and you are not depending on anyone else or need financial help from anyone else then go for it!!! Its your money and your choice. My fiance family are very poor at managing their money and very broke all the time. They resent us for what we spend. It used to bother me A LOT... but over the last year or so, I just came to the conclusion that whether I spent it or saved it, it was still my money. So we now buy what we want and to heck with them. They can get mad and stay away if they want to. That is their choice. We pay all our bills first and then spend what we want. We save for things that are bigger expenses and never asked for a dime from anyone to help us financially.... if you are responsible and independent then GO FOR IT! :)

McheleM 10-21-2011 05:55 AM

It's nobody's business. They don't support you or pay your bills, they don't need to know how much you spend-on rent, electricity or even on your dogs.

Lovetodream88 10-21-2011 06:02 AM

Glad your getting a puppy but sorry you have to hide it for now. My dad thought they were way to expensive but me and my mom knew with my grandmas breathing problems it would be the best breed for us. So we fibbed to my dad about it and had my grandpa asked we would have fibbed to him to. Had it been 100% my money I would have said what does it matter how much she cost it was my money.

I've never understood this philosophy, but heard it more than a few times from people when I got both my yorkies...basically implying I was some sort of horrible person because I chose to spend what they perceived to be alot of money, on the kind of dog I wanted, rather then getting a dog for next to nothing, from the local humane society. Like I shouldn't get what I want from where I want because of all the other irresponsible people in the world. Where is the rationale in that?

My Money...My Choice!

Dogs are a lifetime commitment. For yorkies that can mean alot of years..well into the teens. Get what YOU want and YOU will be happy with!
