Hawks are no joke So I have been hearing about hawks attacking dogs. Well my baby is only 4lbs, so needless to say I had been having nightmares about it. This week I moved into my house and I was so excited because I had a fenced in yard for my girl. Second day there we were standing outside when out of nowhere comes a hawk and swoops down. I screamed and I don't know if Sophie moved or the hawk changed course but I ran to Sophie and snatched her so quick. The hawk then got on the telephone pole waiting. I have never been so scared in my life. I can't even imagine what could of happened and I was there. Now I am up her butt walking behind her in the yard. I make sure I am always in her path. So please everyone be careful...I never thought it would happen and it did. It was so fast and I'm so lucky it missed her. |
So glad you were there. I know you were frightened to death. Glad your baby is ok. Might want to paper train her. There has been a black panther spotted in our area since we had the fire. So I am afraid to put mine out,. Have my gun loaded. Mine will use potty pads if they can't get out |
Thank goodness you were there! I live backed up on a hill above me is all land. I always see hawks sworming above! pnut is not allowed to be outside by his self! We also have to watch for coyotes!! Fun fun! |

OMG hawks, a black panther, and coyotes! Thank goodness everyone is ok and please be careful with your precious babies. All it takes is a blink... |
Yea we use grass pads inside but she loves to run outside and I don't want to take that away from her. I just learned that I can't stand even 10 feet away from her outside. I also heard that I need to plant some bushes so my yard isn't just a huge open space. |
Yes there has been 3 sitings of the panther. One just down the rd from me. I just came in & now I am hearing owls....the fire burnt all the under growth & small trees down. So I am in the open too. Did have srubs & vines on my fences. No more. they are gone. |
I saw a hawk checking out Mojo in our backyard a couple months back. It was certainly terrifying, to say the least! One of the things I remember reading at the time is that a hawk will generally only hunt the same area for a few days, then will move on. Also, the neighbors to the rear of me have a huge bird feeder that attracts tons of birds. Apparently these bird feeders also attract hawks who prey on the smaller birds. These neighbors own a Siberian Husky, so I don't think I'll have any luck getting them to remove their bird feeder, but you better believe it crossed my mind to ask! I always go outside with my pups, anyway, but with two it's sometimes hard to be right on top of both of them. I just try to scan the trees and sky, but I can't and wouldn't want to keep the pups from zooming around their backyard. It's scary stuff to own such tiny babies! |
hawks, black panther, and coyotes...OH MY!!!(think wizard of oz ;) ) But this is too scary. Animals eating our babies...and people stealing our babies to make a buck. :( Glad that Hawk didn't get your baby. In Hawaii we only gotta worry about other people, dogs, and cars. Not too much "wildlife" on land here. |
That is so scary! I'd be afraid to let mine outside after a hawk had been eyeing her! I worry about owls at night, I haven't seen or heard any, but still worry. The worst I've had here is a skunk come through the backyard... |
We have Hawks and my son saw one the other day in our yard and it now has a baby. We had a coyote near our garage several months ago. It is good that you were there with her, you just never know what these animals will do. We had a racoon attack my Cairn Terrier(20 lbs) years ago. fortunately he didn't have any severe injuries but had several gashes on his body. I am always outside with mine, but they are all potty pad trained also. I think if there were Black Panthers around my house I wouldn't go outside. |

I'm glad that everyone's baby is alright!!... But where did these Hawks come from? 2 years ago i had never seen a hawk in person now i see them everywhere in my neighborhood! One morning i opened the back door and one was sitting on my fence i was to afraid to let Max out (or even go ut there myself)... we tryed to scare it away with loud noises, but it just looked at me like it was ready to take me away... So i just closed the door and pulled out a pee pad. |
It is very Scarey!!!! My Dad saw a Hawk pick up a Squirrel and carry it away, right in front of him!! |
We had a Hawk scare here as well! Last weekend my husband was playing with Lola in the middle of a baseball field right before his game. We(sitting on the side of the field) all noticed a huge Hawk circling around him and Lola, So we all staring screaming at him when he looked up, saw the hawk and finally got the message and picked up Lola and brought her back over to us! After that the Hawk stuck around for about a half an hour on the top of the fence or on the lights for the field! Gave all of us, especially my husband, a very good scare!! p.s. We got a pic of the hawk, I'll see if I can post it when i get home from work! |

Either that or you never paid attention, like me because it didn't worry us because we didn't have our little ones to worry about. |

We have coyotes that come through our property each night - same route. I have noticed two hawks recently soaring over the property. I have always had big dogs so didn't have this concern but now with the puppy - I have to be aware of my surroundings at all times. Thanks for the reminder! |
We have Hawks, Owls, coyotes, and other critters as we back up to a large Forest Preserve. We never let the Yorkies out alone. One of us always go out with them, and Carlo also goes out with them. |
We're moving into a new house this weekend with a fully fenced yard, but we will always be outside with Ozzy. Hawks, eagles, coyotes, and racoons are very common in our area. I've also told my SO that we have to make sure we have proper lighting in the back yard. I want to be able to see the entire area at night. In the townhouse complex we live in now there have been several bear sightings. Ozzy hasn't been in the back yard there for about two months. We always walk him on leash. In this same complex my cat got out one night and I never saw her again. |
Hawks are definitely not a joke....my neighbor's 13 pound Yorkie was attacked by one this year and is lucky to be alive. This is one case in which a little extra weight was beneficial to his health, otherwise the hawk's talons would have ripped through his diaphragm and vital organs. He has scars, but is doing well. When I take the boys out on the 30' leashes, the rotten hawks often will show up and start diving toward us. |
I am so glad your Yorkie is ok. Not too long ago, a big owl swooped down to pick up one of my dogs, I told the story on here, the thread is Twlight Attack. We have to be on constant alert when we have our Yorkies outside. Hugs |
Sorry story is Twlight Attack thread. |
So weird that this thread was started today, my DH called me at lunch, a hawk had landed in our backyard with a squirrel and my DH got a few pics of it (unfortunately the squirrel did not make it) But it is scary to know they are so close and the poor animals that have to suffer because of it! |
I am so glad this thread was started as there is something Ive been wanting to ask. Over my local field where I let my two run free there has been an older couple turn up for a couple of times now with a hawk.Could it still attack my two when they have tamed it and its flying from the man to the woman for its food? I do keep my distance from them but the hawk seems more interested in flying back to its owner |
That is so scarry... Sure have to watch out for our Miss Annie. |
