Letting sleep in bed?? Hi all! It's been a while since I've posted here. No new news to report; dex is crazy as ever :) I have been debating recently on whether I should let him sleep in the bed with me or not. Here is the issue. I just got a new bedroom suite and I am concerned he may chew on it. When I'm gone my door is closed so he can't get in there. I really want to trust him because I think he would really enjoy getting to be around me more, but don't want to rush it . Dex is 8 mo now. So... For those of you that let your yorkie sleep with you... At what age did you let them start? Any issues with it? All comments are much appreciated! |
Callie wasn't allowed free roam in my room at night until she was potty trained and I knew there was nothing she could get hurt on. She slept in a crate in my room before she was potty trained. |
Max slept in his xpen next to my bed until he was a little over a year old. It was his choice; he felt safe there. Teddy was about 10 months old before Max allowed him to sleep in the bed. :) For safety, I still keep my bedroom door closed to confine the boys to the room. Since you have concerns about your furniture, I would wait a little longer. The doggies often mature a lot between his age and 1 year, or after. |
George has slept with me from 6 months, during his recovery from being neutered .I mainly did it because he kept getting his jaw caught up under the cone so I was nervous that he would get hurt if I wasnt there to straighten him out ...since then he sleeps with me and 99% of the time he just sleeps all night even some morning staying in bed about a half hour or so after I'm up. Every once in awhile he'll whine during the night to go pee I open the bedroom door he goes down stairs to pee on the pad and comes right back to get back in bed . Never had a problem with him roaming just taking his half of the bed out of the middle ..lol |
ZoE has slept in my bed since she was 7 weeks old. There's never been an issue with her chewing on anything during the night, she just sleeps next to me, wakes me up once in the night to go pee and then again in the morning for breakfast. Give it a go..there's nothing like snuggling with your pup and then waking up to puppy kisses to start your day off on a good note :) |
Thanks for the replies. I was actually thinking that maybe someone made a type of wrap around leather that you could put around the legs of furniture? Anyone know anything about this? Also, this question may be best suited for the products threads , but since I already have this tread going... In my area we only have petsmart and feeders supply. Can any shed some light on the best sampoo and conditioner for yorkie that they would sell at either place? |
Sophie has slept with us since she was about 14 weeks old. She tried to be a furniture leg/woodwork chewer until she was about 8 months but we just kept a constant eye on her or put her in her doggie den if we couldn't. We kept her out from under the bed for that reason. Never had a problem with her chewing the bedroom furniture. Thankfully she outgrew the chewing tendencies at about 1 year. Now she only chews her bone or her kong. She did become a huge BED HOG though Seems she must lay right up against us :dogzzz:! Now we would miss her if she wasn't there ;) |
Get some apple bitter that should keep her from chewing on the furniture it worked great when I got my little girl at 12 weeks, she has never chewed on any thing I even put in on my flower and she never once chewed on them. She slept with me front the first day I brought her home |
I generally don't let mine sleep in bed with me only because my bed is so high and it makes me nervous they might fall and get hurt. I think if he is house broken, I'd go for it. |
Jackson's slept on my bed since he was about 4 months old. :) I let him one night, he slept thru the night, and the rest is history..... He's been there ever since and I wouldn't have it any other way. :) I do have a baby gate still on my door that I close every night. Just because if not, he may hear a noise or see an animal outside and start barking and I don't wanna deal with it. Easier to know he's right in my room. |
Gizmo has been in bed with us since 8 weeks. I tried to crate him at night, but after three weeks (with one of those weeks contained our wedding) of only two hours of sleep each night, we tried him sleeping in our bed and he's been there ever since. No accidents, and he will paw at us if he needs to go out to go potty, which is rare. |
I am guilty as charge, my Harry boy has slept with hubby and I since he was about 10 months.. as a breeder when my puppy parents ask me I very sincerely tell them for me is a Very personal decission. Harry has never chew on my bed or any furniture but when my bed was by the window he did scratched the headboard while barking at passers by..:D |
Both of mine have slept with us from day one. However, I did not get them as tiny pups. Rosie was 6 months and Mikki was over a year. Now there is one on either side of me. |
I would keep him off the bed when you are not around until you think he is mature enough not to damage it. Then, when he is older and more mature, he can have free reign and you can have less heartbreak. |
Sleeping with dogs All of my pups and cats has started out in my bed from the beginning. Jackie and Sadie was 12 weeks when I got them. I put them in my bed with my husband and I the day they came home. Not only did they sleep all night, but they never had any accidents in my bed. I now have all 6 of them in bed with me. If they have to potty they will wake me up. At bedtime I say to all of the dogs and cats, "Come on lets go to bed " and all of them get up and walk into the room. I get in bed first and they all get into there spots. That is where they stay until someone has to potty during the night. If at all. The ones that have to, potty the ones that don't, do not move. I have fostered many dogs as well. and I start from day one with allowing them in the bed as well, Never have I had a problem with chewing. I keep my bedroom door closed during the night. I keep water and dry food in the room as well just in case someone gets hungry or thirsty.Thank goodness for king size beds. I do love my time with my fur babies. Good luck with sleeping with your baby, it is the greatest thing in the world. |
