I admit that I giggled at your story. Sounds like you needed each other. Brutus will turn out to be a good furbaby just because he is loved. If his tummy is sensative and what he is throwing up in the middle of the night is yellow liquid, try to make sure that he gets a tiny snack before bedtime. I have one dog that has to be fed a little throughout the day and then a tiny bit at about 10pm just before bed. |
Thanks for all the wonderful replies. To answer a few questions that were asked. Brutus is 4 months old - his birthday is May 26th. I am not sure why his first mom said I could have him and not the other little puppy, I didn't ask. She isn't really a breeder to say as Brutus' mom is half Pom and half Yorkie but his dad is all Yorkie, so I guess I have myself a Porkie! His face looks Yorkie, but you can tell by his fuzzy fur that he has the Pom in him. As far as his belly conditions, he loves to eat anything. We found out the hard way some of his favorite things - mulch, sticks, grass, crickets - anything outdoors. We use to sit on the porch and watch him outside go potty and it never crossed my mind that he was ingesting all this stuff. Since all of his blood work and x-rays came back good, the vet said he must had eaten something that had to be worked out of his system. Now we are right on top of him, but the little sucker is fast and he'll grab a piece of mulch sit and look at me and then take off like he is in the Kentucky Derby - sheesh! The vet recommended that I gradually transition him back to kibble, but now I am waiting till his new food arrives, so I picked up some more ID food this am at the vet. I also asked tham about pulling baby teeth during his neuter, but nothing was in his file, so the techs are gong to look at his teeth on Monday while we are at puppy class to see. He will be microchipped at the neuter as well. I have said to all my friends, I am not sure who found who - funny that so many of you said the same thing. Thanks again for all the wonderful support and advice, this site is wonderful and I will post some more pic's tonight when I am home from work! |
My little furbutts have been May-babies. I think they have wonderful little personalities (a little spunky and full of themselves, but as they grow out of the puppy, they grow into that much personality). Believe it or not you will look back and laugh/miss these days when he was so full of himself. |
Yes they will eat ANYTHING,teething is tuff on puppies. Chew toys and Kongs are good. Teaching "drop it" as a command has come in REAL handy with Mina, she is 9months old and should of been named "Hoover". She has heard "drop it" so much that all I have to do now is say her name if she has something that she shouldnt, smart lil thing. Ceasar Millan (Dog Whisperer) has several books out. I have trained and groomed dogs for many years but am reading one of his books because you can always learn something new. Going to pass it on to my DD who is planning on a new puppy this spring and her fiance has NEVER trained anything. |
Agreed, teething is crazy. I ordered bully sticks for him with his new food, hopefully they will be ok with his stomach - he currently has nylabones but I have to really watch him with them. I forgot to mention my grooming plan. His first appt is on the 14th and they will cut his nails. I think I will leave his major grooming to the professionals because, well...... I tried to trim the hair around his eyes and let's just say between him squirming and my unsteady hand it didn't work out so well- lol. You have to look really close because I didn't cut that much, but it is so uneven that it reminds me of pictures you see of 6 year olds that got ahold of scissors themselves. |
Do your groomer a favor and play with his feet every day. Rub the top of them, between the pads, talk to him while you are doing this and tell him he is good. I even play with their nails. It will train him to understand that his feet will be handled and make it easier for the groomer to do their job. If you want to learn to groom, read, watch youtube and dont try to do more than about 5min at a time for a while. A little every evening is how I have trained my dogs to let me touch them anywhere with my hands and the scissors. At this age it is more about them learning that being touched is ok than it is about being beautiful. First visit to the groomer being just about nails is a good idea. |
Great idea, I definately will. I brush him everyday and the more we do it the better he is. I did check out his nails last night and he seemed ok with me messing with his feet. It sounds like his first grooming session will consist of a bath (he does really good at home), nails and teeth - no trimming so he will get use to the grommers and they will get to know him. He does really good at the vet, Lord knows we have been there enough and that is where his puppy classes are as well. |
I take my girl to be groomed about every 6 weeks but she needs her face trimmed more often so I can see her beautiful eyes and so her fur is not in her eyes. I bought some round tipped scissors to use for her face. If you hold the fur on the chin nice and tight they will not move so much when your trying to do it. You have control. I learned this from the girl who has some grooming videos posted her in the grooming section here. Me and my daughter used to try to do Gracie's face with no success until I learned that little trick. I also trim the fur around the feet and I keep the length of her fur trimmed evenly. Oh, can't they run. Gracie is so fast! Amazing how their little legs can move! I have to be careful inside to keep things put away because she still loves to chew plastic and anything else that she can get her sharp little teeth on. Usually as long as she has a bully stick available she is OK. But if I don't get a new one out when she has finished one she starts stealing things again. :( |
