Erect ears... Floppy ears!!! So i've been looking at picture of everyone's furbabies.. and i've noticed that some of the younger yorkies have erect ears already... and Max's ears are still flopping, and i know they are supposed to be erect because they were standing straight up for about a week and then they fell again. I have no problem with the flopping ears.. I just want to know how do i get them to stand?? I read somewhere the bigger the ear the harder it is to make them stand (max has nice sized ears lol), and that i should tape them... well is there another way? will it hurt him when i take the tape off? and how does this process even work? Last question: does him still having ALL of his baby teeth have anything to do with flopping ears?? |
Hello.. Here is a link to a thread on this same topic.... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-question.html Paisley's ears kind of flopped too. They were standing erect at 10 weeks old when I got her. Then a week or so later one ear was flopping a little and the next day it was back up and then the other ear was a little floppy. I fed plain natural yogart to her. About 2 tablespoons for 3 days. Her ears came back up and have stayed up ever since. Some people do tape them i think. I know nothing about that :) |
I kept the all of the hair on Belle's ears trimmed/shaved when she was younger. The weight of the hair on their ears can make them flop down. Now that she's older I just trim the top 1/3 of her ears to keep her looking neat. |
thank you!!! |
I taped roxy's ears, fed he a tbs of cottage cheese every other day for a week and shaved the top half of her ears. Eventually they did stand although one ear is not as sturdy as the other. It waves like a flag when she runs. Ive read that teething will cause the ears to droop. |
Thanks, so feeding hime things like natural yorgurt, and cottage cheese will also help them stand? is there any other foods? |
Ziva's ears were a little floppy at 3 months. I did the cottage cheese/ yogurt, trimming, and massage. I think they all helped , they only go down if she doesn't feel well or is sad. Check out my avatar they almost swivel! - The new puppy's ears are up already, she can fold down the tips when inquisitive! |
yea the massaging does help.. thats why his ears stood up for that week, but lately the massaging hasn't been doing it and i shaved the tip of his ears, but nothing. So im trying to do something about it before its too late. |
I've read you can also massage the ears to help the blood flow will help them stand. If he is teething, be prepared for the ears to go up and down, it seems to just happen during this time. If you see my avatar, none of this advice is from personal experience :p I love the floppy ears, makes Kaji an eternal puppy. Plus, he was 12 months old when I go him. I figured it was a lost cause to shave his ears, massage, and tape them up at that point. |
They will stand when they are ready to stand. My Mother used a staple gun on mune as I looked like a small Dumbo! |
Mia is five months and her ears are standing but they did the same thing up and down and they have been up for about a month now :)) |

did they just stand on they're own or did you do something to help them stand? |
when i got chloe both her ears were floppy, then a couple weeks went by and one stood up on it's one....then after being groomed for the first time, and having her ears shaved they stood up. One was a little weaker than the other so I used cardboard and medical non stick tape and taped that ear...a day later, It stood up and has never fallen back down. I looked on youtube for instructions to tape her ear in a way that i knew wouldn't hurt her. |

I didn't do anything to Diva's. Fortunately, around 3 months or so, they stood up and stayed up. |
the link that Paisley-n-me posted was from a question i had asked. I ended up not having to tape her ears. I shaved her ears where they flopped over (I was told that the weight of the hair can cause them to flop). then I feed her all natural plain yogurt. No flavor and no fake sugars...all natural. She loves it and eats a little bit every night. (i was told the calcium can help the cartilage strengthen) Within a week her ears were up and perky!!! They did however flop down today for a few hours. I think its because she is teething?? Hope it helps!!! |

I went by and got him some dannon vanilla flavored yogurt... is that good? And how much do you give her? |

The one I fed was Dannon - "all natural" vanilla. |
That should be ok. check to make sure that it doesn't have any fake sugars in it (splenda, aspartame, that kinda stuff) I feed her about a tablespoon-ish a day. she loves it! If your pup doesn't like yogurt, you can try some cottage cheese! I was so ready to do the taping, but was trying everything else that I could. I thought taping would be a hassle because she would never keep it on. So I shaved her ears....nothing for a few days. after 2 days of yogurt they were up! GOOD LUCK!!! keep us posted! :D |
I checked for artificial flavors, and there were none... But i gave him and my other dog (because whatever he gets she has to have too) a tablespoon this morning.... And they are both up now!!!... well they fall and flap when he runs or lay down but they eventually come back up!!! Thank all of you so much!!! the yogurt is really effective!!! I'm so glad i didnt have to tape his ears, i really didn't want to. So thanks guys!!! |

YAY! Im so glad! Yeah I just looked at my little girl and her ears flopped back down. they have been doing it all day. must be teething or something! :) |
Yea its probably teething... i can't wait until the teething stage is over... no more flopping ears and no more chewing on everything. |
Kayla's ears have always stood up. Dudley's flopps until he sleeps. Then they stand up or if he gets excited. Is that not crazy? I asked the breeder because we never taped his ears and she said she had seen them stand up as late as 4yrs. old. Does that sound right? Maybe there is hope for Dudie after all. Although I think they are cute if with their ears down. Too, I never shaved his ears until about 2 or 3 mo. ago because he hates the clippers with a purple passion. I'm sure that would have helped. But, when he sleeps, up they come. Wonder what he is dreaming about? |
Alphie still has floppy ears at "1 week shy of 8 mo." Am I to presume it is a hopeless case for them stand at this age? He's still cute, by the way. I just thought he would look more "Yorkie-ish" if they would stand...... |

Yea i understand... but try giving a tablespoon of all natural yogurt.. NO ARTICIAL flavors (they are very harmful)... i don't know if its to late but you can always try. |
ok ..thanks we'll give a whirl.:thumbs up |
Was amazed to read about yoghurt making ears stand up. We have had our little boy for 10 days. When we had him one of his ears was folded over. We were advised to give him yoghurt +honey on a finger as a treat. After him being so good the first night I gave him a tablespoon of plain natural yoghurt with a squeeze of honey on it. Being a yorkie he remembered the second, third etc mornings. After 6 days both ears are strongly errect a d all down to yoghurt:D |

Is 2.5yrs too old to fix them haha? maci's are cute as a button as floppy as they are, but just wondering if they can stand at all now. I saw her owners shave a good inch or two off the top and the stand up, but when it grows back they flop lol. |
He is certainly chewing everything in sight! But to be fair, after a couple of gentle 'pinches' he recognises the word 'no' and will go back to taking it out of his toys. He demanded :) I play with him today and I have 2lovely holes in my arm. He loves me to tickle him, withdraw my hand and hide it behind my back then walk my fingers toward him to tickle again, he reacts just like a child would :) x:D |
