Does your Yorkie like to be brushed? Paisley doesn't seem to like to be brushed. She doesn't mind me brushing her back but doesn't like to be brushed anywhere else... legs, belly, chest. I have bought 2 brushes, one is actually a cat brush with soft bristles. it seems to be the one she tollorates best. I brush her slow and gently. I know it has to be done so she won't get tangles but she wiggles and squirms and tries to get away. She will sometimes even bite at the brush. I know it's not hurting her. She just doesn't like it. Does anyone else have this problem with their Yorkie? Is it just a "puppy" thing that she'll outgrow? Any suggestions for me? |
Levi has learned to tolerate being brushed. He used to do the same sort of thing - wiggling and biting at the brush. But over time, he's really calmed down and learned to sit nicely while I brush him. He still doesn't love getting his beard or the top of his head brushed, but he has at least learned to be patient and still. :) |
Kaji doesn't like it either, and he's 3. He tolerates it well, as long as I don't neglect the brushing. Once he gets tangled up, that's when he minds and will cry and run away. As long as I brush him everyday, and be has mo tangles, he let's me do it. Careful with soft brushes, especially on longer coats. You can brush everyday, and never realize just how matted the pup is. That happened to a friend of mine. She was surprised to learn the groomer had to shave her pup down completely because of he terrible matting, even thigh she brushed her dog religiously every day. |
ZoE is 9 months old and finally seems to enjoy being groomed. I use a metal comb, not a brush on her, and she jumps right up on the chaise lounge, where I groom her, waiting to be combed as soon as she sees me pick up the comb & her box of bows. When she was a younger puppy she would try to bite the brush the whole time I was brushing her. I switched to an old metal comb that I used on my previous yorkie, and she doesn't like to bite it and seems to enjoy the feel of it as I comb her. |
Buster is almost four and he does not like to be brushed, he tries to get away and he bites at the brush. But with a few treats he will let me do it for a while. He gets most of his mats along his neck and his beard. |

I pair brushing with walks. The boys know they have be brushed or combed a little before they can go out. I save most deep brushing/combing for bath day. The boys love the attention and they love the extra massaging that I incorporate. I agree with DvlshAngel that combing is essential. Brushes are not enough to keep the hair tangle free. Try grooming when your pup is worn out and do a lot of massing in between brushing and combing. |

I have two brushes and two combs. One Madan brush (a soft one) an Isinis brush (more firmer and dense bristles) and one mustache comb, and one wider tooth comb were the teeth rotate. Also you need to have a good conditioning spray. I started brushing Uni as a baby when she was napping. I was able to flip her on her back and brush her belly. she loves it now and really looks forward to brushings. I think I am lucky though, in a way, bc she has thin silky hair and not a lot of it, so brushing is very easy. |

There are lots of brands that are good. I like stuff from mimimomo, you can pm her, she has the Madan brushes and shampoos and conditioners, and sprays. You need to spray each time you brush, and never brush dry. This is really hard for me to follow this rule each time, but you have to try. Even i don't spray every single time, but you should. It helps to keep the hair from breaking off, and helps untangle the matts. And it keeps them smelling good between baths. :) |

I have "The Stuff" from Pet Edge, something called Vet's Best (it was on sale at Petco, and not too bad actually) and then the spray I got from mimimomo, it's the Isle of Dogs line. I like the IOD smell the best, but I think the Vet's best one is the best on Uni's hair. I did not care for the Stuff. |

I use a metal comb. As soon as I pick it up Diddy rolls over on his back. He loves it. He loves anything to do with being combed or scratched. lol xoxo |
I woke Paisley up last night and while she was still sleepy I rolled her over and combed her belly and chest. She let me do it for a bit without a struggle and without biting the comb. :) yay! |
Dori gets brushed with a Madden soft brush and mustache comb. I wait until bedtime when she is sleepy and compliant. A little spritz of Mr Groom on the brush keeps her smelling fresh. Her cotton coat rarely mats, even with a halter. |
Shesha does not really like being brushed and she is over a year old. She likes her head being brushed and her back but that is it. She squeals if we even try to touch her legs or tummy. |
Kaos LOVES to be brushed!!!! "Brush+Kaos=Treat" ...for him since he was a baby. Now he stands pretty and tall with his chest out for however long it takes, because he KNOWS when I am done he is getting something out of it. :p |

Mine act as if I am trying to remove a limb! They are still pups so still learning. I got a spray in/leave in conditioner from my groomer. It helps to keep their coat smooth and soft. Usually one squirt on each side will do. They do not like the belly and legs, but tolerate it well. They get a little piece of a treat when we are done as a reward. |
