Help! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...37-guilty.html I need a matte removing cure. I'll try to get batteries in my cam to show how small & where. |
Best is to buy some "Detangling spray" and work it into each mat to see if they will come out. If they are too stubborn try cutting them out by putting scissors between pup and mat and cut perpendicular to pup but thru the mat. Kind of hard to explain. |
I usually try working cornstarch into the matt, and then tease it out using only one tooth of a comb, working from the ends of the hair towards the skin, and holding the matt with my free hand to prevent pulling the dog's hair at the roots. It's a bit tedious, but effective. |

I don't care how careful I am, Gracie gets mats and she is groomed daily. So please don't think it doesn't happen to the rest of us. I hate mats too. The best advice I got was from my own hair dresser, cornstarch or baby powder, and a paper clip unbent. Slowly pick from ends of hair toward skin. If the mat is really tight cut mat the same way the hair grows, not across like snipping bangs. Hope this helps |
I usually just cut mats out- not the most glamorous way but it is 100% effective, lol! |
Oh and I forgot to mention this... I always put on a leave-in conditioner afterwards, to help prevent rematting. If the coat is dry, I may choose coconut oil, it looks oily for a day or two but then soaks into the hair. Also with Tinkerbell, when her coat was short, she matted worse and quicker than when it is long. Learned that through trial and error... and it really depends on each dog's coat as to what works best. |
Thank you all for the great advise and caring responses I honestly am disappointed in this happening I feel like I really do only take on what I can handle, but everything has been very stressed lately. Nice everyone is so understanding and helpful. I'm going to try corn starch tomorrow I have been using WEN as a shampoo and conditioner but I have been so rushed in all honestly with shampooing. Crazy busy with school and other activities and then baby doing it all myself mostly as most moms do: (three skin kids and 3 furkids one skin kid will be 5 months on the 22) by the time I get them all washed and dry baby wakes up, they lay to dry more, I get back an d brush as fast as I can lately and hence tiny mattes in the under beards, I just haven't been as thorough as I need to be. I'll update on how it goes or post pics of the "hack jobs" |
We shave our babies "bodies" ...... This is where they mat up from wearing clothes.... But leave their heads, tails and legs "fluffy" |
I have a cat that matts and I just cut them out. I used to try to get them out but I just cut them out now |
2 Attachment(s) See right under beard (chin) tiny but there he's so wiggly when I try to get at it! |
Use a pinch or so of corn starch, work it through the mat with your fingers first. The mat should separate somewhat, then pick away at the mat with one or two of the teeth on a comb, starting at the bottom of the mat. It will take time and patience but I think you can work them out and hopefully not have to cut them or lose too much coat. |
