To Add Or Not - Pls Help Me Decide The husband and I currently are in talks about adding to our clan. We have only ever had one female yorkie at a time. Gidget is a little over two. She is a very quiet, submissive girl. We think she misses her own kind, as she lived w her breeder and other dogs until she was 18 months old when we got her. Do you think she misses the others or is just as content to be a spoiled only child? If we got another one, should it be younger, opposite sex, same sex, littermate (if possible)? If we got a male, are the potty habits different? Thanks for your thoughts! Husband and I are hoping you all can enlighten us on this world of owning multiple yorkies! :) |
I think yorkies can be perfectly happy being an only but if you decide to get another they do well in pairs also. I have a male and a female and they get along well my female is the submissive one and my male is the alpha. My male was easier to potty train and I have less problems with him with accidents. Good luck with whatever you decide |
I think another Yorkie would be very lucky to get a forever home with you! Definitely more work than 1. I assume financially everything would be set. I'm sure you're willing to deal with all possible behavioral issues that could come up (even if pups didn't get along and they had to be separated). And I also assume time isn't an issue. My girl hated other dogs for years. She got a brother. Still gets really snippy with him at times, but overall loves him. Fairly certain if we had gotten a girl, it wouldn't have worked (or not as quickly anyway). But that is her and her preference. Doesn't mean another girl wouldn't work for you. That said, why not try a Yorkie meet up and see if she does well with a particular dog and pick the sex that way? I mean if she has never shown dog aggression before, either would probably be just fine. My vote is for a boy though. ;) FWIW, we thought that E's attitude toward other dogs surely indicated that she would hate a sibling. No so. I'm almost guilty for not getting her one before. She can be a dog now and play doggie games with him. She is less clingy to me and seems to be a more balanced pup. |
I have three.. only one is a yorkie. Remy loves LOVES her brothers, but they were there first. One of the boys loves remy the other puts up with her. That is their personallity. I think two is nice, I have alway heard two girls together is hard (they are not called *itches for nothing ) but I have had mostly boys. I do have to break the boys up once and awhile... they both want to alpah. Remy just wants to play... |
I think your home would be awesome for another dog. And if Gidget lived with them before she should do great with a friend. Now boy or girl is going to have to be your decision. Myself I would go with female. But the males are great also. I just rather train a female jmo. I have dad, daughter yorkie and Maddi the cairn is female. They all get along very well most of the time. Good luck |
I think they love having a buddy. And I know I enjoy watching them play and play and I enjoy the extra loving I get too! :) ;) I'd def get another!!! |

I added a senior boy to our house years ago, and my young boy didn't react well. It was a long battle to get him over the jealousy and possessiveness. When the senior boy died, I added a female pup, and she whipped my jealous boy into shape quickly. There are still jealousy issues because the boy is a bit of a problem child, but the female was a much better fit. |
Thanks for your input. Multiple dogs in a household is very new to the two of us. With my Cricket, I did the same as Ellie May. She was so cranky w other dogs, I never thought of adding another. I see, though, she was braver than I and eventually added one. It is nice to see that is working out. To those who suggested a boy, another question. Gidget is pee pad trained. Will a male also go on a pad? Would I need separate potty areas? |

I added our boy Yorkie just this June. We already had a 19lb female Cavachon, and I was told by several dog experts (vets, trainers, etc) that hands down you should get a male if you already have a female. So far it has been wonderful! This is the first time I have ever had a male dog, and now I wish I had always had males! Never thought I would say that!! |
I think that's up to you! I think your baby will be fine either way because if she's an only child, she'll get all the lovin she needs and feel content...or if she gets a play mate...she'll be happy. There is the chance of jealousy....LOL...my Chloe is jealous when I love on my husband's dog...so think about that as well.....also yorkie's tend to be pack dogs , so this could go either way. I'm sure you'll make the right decision....I know how it is....SOOO many things going through your mind....it's a big decision..... |
Go for it. Then again, I am partial. |
They can use pads. Neuter as soon as healthily possible. My girl Yorkie is definitely a ..... My boy non-Yorkie doesn't listen unless I squirt him, but he isn't purposely mean to anybody. I like both girls and boys. Depends on the breed and such. I like having one of each. I do think that a lot of times it's a better fit. Can't imagine getting another female Yorkie with Ellie's personality. |
Myself, I prefer the boys!!! I love my girls, but really want another boy. The only downside is the leg lifting and marking. Thank God for belly bands is all I have to say. I have heard tho if you get them neutered BEFORE they learn to lift the leg that they will never start lifting it....I do not know how true that is..... I say go for it, get a little man, you will not be sorry |
