Stranger photographing your dog Yesterday I had the strangest experience while waiting for the school bus to bring the kids home. A random person at the bus stop started taking pictures of Norman. Not just one picture but A LOT of pictures. It was weird. He didn't speak English, and he didn't even acknowledge that I was holding the lease, so I have no idea what it was all about ~ but it made me really uncomfortable. Even the kids were asking why he was doing it. Has anyone ever had something like this happen to them? What did you do? |
no, weird. |
I have had random people at every festival I've been to this summer ASK if they could take a photo(s) of ZoE. Some had never seen a dog in a doggie stroller before and wanted her pic, others liked what she was wearing at the time...like at our most recent Scottish Festival where she was wearing a custom made tartan harness with matching leash and tartan ribbon bow...everyone we saw seemed to go nuts over that. But, I've never had anyone try to take photos without asking...that would be really strange & very rude! |
I've never had anyone take pictures of my girls without asking and they mostly take pictures when I take them to see Santa in the mall while they are in their stroller and dressed in Christmas (dare I say) "dresses". :p The only time I put dresses on them. |
Honestly it would be like someone randomly taking pics of my kids. I would find it very rude and unnerving. Like a privacy line has been crossed. |
Just in case, I'll bet you are watching your dog and your property extra carefully. Sounds odd odd odd to me. |

It depends, I guess. Like, when I go to the dog park, I will often bring my camera and even though I'm obviously mainly focusing on Jackson, sometimes other dogs get in the photograph as well. I'm not being a creep or anything, just have some pictures of other random peoples dogs, LOL. But in your situation, it may be a little odd, but not necessarily harmful. Like Nancy said, if he was from another country, maybe his customs are different, etc. |
I find it very odd when people ask to take photos of my dog and usually decline. If we are in a dog park/ playgroup setting and people are snapping photos that doesn't bother me at all- I get that they want photos of their dogs interacting with other dogs, or are just trying to get photos of their own dogs, etc. But just wanting a random photo of my dog is very odd, sorry. And if someone in my area was just snapping photos that would really creep me out because I would be concerned about motives. |
OMG, no, never. |
I recently asked a girl I saw at a festival if I could take a picture of her yorkie because she was so cute and had the hair cut I wanted for Cali. I explained why I wanted to take a few pictures and she was fine with it. I took the picture to my groomer and she was able to cut her just like I wanted. But I would never take pictures and not ask first. |
That would bother me. I think I would have asked him to stop and I would have picked up Sofia and made sure he stayed away. |
Lots of tourists have photographed Fido, I dont mind it :) |
1 Attachment(s) To be honest it happens all of the time. Kaos goes everywhere cause he's a service dog, and I live in NYC. Tourists that can't speak english do it ALL the time. I don't really mind though. The last time I had someone do it, they were tourists from Spain and they emailed me the pictures weeks later. I was grateful and surprised they did. I am always weird about strangers touching him though, or even picking him up. Otherwise I don't mind them taking pictures, I would take pictures if I saw him too. :p |
It would probably make me nervous if this happened to us. I tend to have a suspicious mind though. :) |
After all the attention on dog theft increasing by almost 50% in the last year, it would worry me. Hopefully completely innocent but be careful just in case. |

Um this happened to me right near central park and the situation was very similar. I had just finished taking Teddy for his walk and we were walking back to our building and this women kept snapping photos of him and kept moving closer and closer. He was getting a little freaked out and so was I. I gave her a very angry look and picked Teddy up. Once I picked him up, she said to me "do you mind if I take a picture of your dog". I said, "yes, I do mind and you have already taken several so I think you have enough". I heard that some people out there do this to help them scam. They take pictures of a dog. Post it on a craigslist type website and try and sell the dog and pass it off as their own. Meanwhile they in fact have no dog to sell and scam the person who is trying to purchase the pup from them. |

Usually when people photo your dog because they think it is cute, they are smiling while they are doing it, asking first usually if they can, don't take a bunch of pictures, move on when done and say something to you about your dog or at least make some friendly gesture with the hand or face. Don't people from all countries know to do this as dog lovers we appreciate a fine dog and want to share our love and appreciation of them with each other. This just sounded rather creepy to me in the way the person went about it and not at all like the usual friendly dog lover appreciating a wonderful dog. |
The only people that have taken pics of my dogs is at a fair where they are REALLY dressed up for the occasion and they always ask. There is one word that the person would of understood "NO",it is pretty universal. So not ok to take pics of me,my kids or my dogs without asking. |
Last Halloween when Callie was an elephant I had someone come up and ask if they could take a picture and then at a dog expo when Sammy and Callie where dress a like but in one in the girl version and the other in the boy version someone asked to take a picture. In your case it sounds weird and honestly I think I would have picked Callie up and held her kinda blocking her from the camera I would also keep a very good eye on her. |
I wouldn't mind people taking pics of Teddy, but yes, I do prefer it when they ask first. |
I had people ask first if they could take pictures. On the same note, I like taking pictures and have taken done the same with my phone camera...after asking first. |
Yorkie Poparazzi! Doggie Magazine will have your little one on the front cover. :D Maybe check the web for photos of people using your picture for random stuff. (ie. dog for sale). I don't know just a thought with all the scams. |
I didn't realize that so many people take pictures of other peoples dogs. The general consensus seems to be that asking first is preferred. I honestly wouldn't have minded if this guy had asked first (or made a gesture of some sort asking permission) ~ but he didn't and he took picture after picture from different angles and it made me think he was doing it to steal a dog 'to order'. Norman doesn't go out alone but we will be paying extra attention when we are out and about... |
My front doorman has taken several photos of Riley after we come back in from our walk... that isn't too strange, I guess.... but it was a little awkward. And a couple of months ago I walked past a couple who had just gotten married.... they were taking photos and about to get into a limo... when they spotted Riley. The girl was going nuts and they were taking photos of him. LOL!!!! I didn't really think anything of it. |
I would be watching him closely maybe Ive watched to much CSI or SUV or something but a dog-napping is the first thing that comes to my mind! |
I have never had random people take pictures, but just the other day a woman asked if she could take a picture of my two so she could send it to her daughter. She told me her daughter loves yorkies and that she would love to get a picture of mine. I told her it was fine and then we went on our way. I would be a bit creeped out by a stranger just taking pictures without asking... |
I would be worried that he was going to use the pictures to scam someone... You know those scams in the paper that say they are being deployed and need to rehome their dog, please send $500 western union to so and so. I am a very cautious person by nature though, and he may have just thought she was cute! |
