Disgusting... |
When I was younger I never really knew this type of person existed. Then I got a job working with the public. Did I ever get my eyes opened! There is a culture of people that make up a large part of the population that have no values what so ever. It would scare me at times because they were not just low income people as some would expect. It goes through every economic and social group of our country. No morals or feeling for anyone but themselves. Just keep everything locked up really well people. If things get worse in this country you are going to see some things that you never thought possible. |
It seems like a lot of people my age seem to think a dog that's loose is fair game. They don't see it as stealing, they seem to think it was abused or mistreated, and therefore, if they want it they can keep it. I also know that some YT members seem to think they don't need to find the real owner of a dog when they find one. Lots of them seem to believe the pound will just kill it, so they can keep it. It's good to know that the younger generation sees this for what it is. In this case though, the women clearly knew it was stealing, and just didn't care. I can't believe she is so stupid to tell people that. I think the store owner should know what she tells people. |
I was telling my dh about this thread.. he got really upset. I guess her never thought about someone stealing one of our dogs. I have warned him to be careful, mostly with Remy! He thought the fact she was microchipped was protection.. but only if a honest person finds her. I have had arguments with some of my students about the finders keepers value system. A lot of them feel if they find something, like a phone, money, dog.... it is theirs. They would not take.. but finding is different in their minds. Of course finding could be in a situation that they could easly find the owner but they don't make that effort. Like someone finding a lost dog and not trying to find the owner. They change when they "lose" something. I think some feel that way about dogs too. Like Nancy said. Values are learned from the parents! |

I agree, it starts with the parents. However, I see kids today at 5 years old dropping f-bombs and it makes me weep for the future. |

Disgusting! |
I was taught at a very early age to stop and think about what I am about to do or say and see if it is something I would want someone else to do or say to me. It may have made me a little too empathetic because I always think of how I would feel if I were in someone else's situation and I connect really closely. Yes, kids learn most of their values at home but their friends are a big influence as well. We have all seen kids who were taught well at home throw it all out the window when they get with a group of kids. These "flash mobs" that are taking place are a big eye opener to some but it is just a symptom of what is going on. |
To the woman behind the counter who tries to validate theft, Just because you would prefer your investments in fine clothes, cars, home entertainment or -gasp- some other guilty pleasure, you are not justified in your belief that thievery is acceptable when it comes to other's investments. Stealing is not only morally wrong, but it is against the law. Have a nice day |

 People are unbelievable! I think I would have responded something like this: Because we love our yorkie so much, she is microchipped. If she were ever stolen, we would not give up searching for her, and would definitely press criminal charges against the person who stole our precious baby from us!!!! Hopefully that would have at least made her think before stealing other people's babies!!! The nerve of some people!!!:mad: |
I do believe it! Before we got Shield, we had just Emma. Our 69 pound mixed large dog. We were walking & my kids wanted a drink so I hooked Emma outside & we went in to grab a drink & come out. There was some kind of commotion outside while we were in line(weren't inside the store but maybe 3-5 min). A lady working at the store stood at the door on the outside watching these people. We came outside, the people were gone but the employee told me the lady in the truck was trying to convince the man with her to pick up the dog(OUR) dog & put her in the back of their truck!! So she stood there watching & told them to leave while we got our drinks. I couldn't believe it!! Emma is a mix dog & is only priceless to us! i have had her 11 yr & would be soo upset if something happened to her!! We live in a small town too so even more surprising. I have never & will never leave her outside again, that was only the 2nd time I had done it anyway. |
There was a thing on the news a week or so ago about a pure bred Maltese pup that was taken out of a pet store. It was found later in dumpster. It would have ended up in a landfill if some people had not heard it crying. Sick, sick people. |
omg that's horrible. what next, i want a baby why not just steal one from a daycare or a stroller...YUCKY People disgust me these days!!!! |
hopefully it was just a tasteless joke! i'd hate to be around when she felt she was "ready" for a dog! |
Whats in the heart comes out the mouth. No, she probably meant it. People like that think you owe them something. Morons!!! |
We should all remember that the next time we witness someone saying such a thing to tell them the following: Since people pay so much for their yorkies, most all yorkie (or insert whatever breed here) owners have their pets microchipped. The policies of all vets are to check microchips against the identity of the owners who have brought their pets in for treatment. If you steal an expensive purebred dog, you will be caught and you will go to prison. Now, we know that this is not the policy at all vets but this may work to dissuade someone from taking the route of just stealing a pet. This terrifies me so much, I am even afraid to leave them home when I leave should the house be robbed and I wouldn't even consider taking them out where I might have to leave them in my car for even a very short time. I used to love to take my kids "bye-bye" but no more unless I can watch them at all times. There are a lot of rotten people out there and now, even more so with this horrible economy. |

Seems like a true dog lover that found a loose dog would want to get it back to its owner as soon as they could! |

I think she meant it for sure but for one of two reasons: to see if you would agree/condone or just to get at you. Either way it's a terrible thing to say. Even before I felt the close love of my own dog I knew enough to know it'd be terrible to separate a dog from it's owner with no TRULY JUST cause. I also thought if something valued over $100 is stolen it's a felony here, but my info may be outdated. If it's true would that law apply to an animal? Bet she wouldn't be working much of any where with a felony on her record, not to mention the shame in getting one by stealing a dog. My biggest fear if I were to leave Princess alone outside or even a temp controlled vehicle is someone taking her. I worry about that more than her running away or having a mishap. And I'd certainly accept a misdemeanor if necessary to get my baby back. |

I am still shocked that someone would say that. Think it? Sure.. The sad thing is I know many people that have had dogs and cats stolen, but to see absolutely nothing wrong with stealing someone's dog and SAY it? No, I have ended up with an extra dog because I found it. BUT I did the responsible thing and reported to the shelter I found the dog, and always check the dog to see if the dog is chipped, (I have a friend that has a universal scanner). I chose not to turn the dog over to the shelter because of the over crowded nature of the shelter, and because so many dogs have been known to catch kennel cough there. And because I know the dog only has a limited time there. If the dog isn't chipped or tatooed, the law here says you own the dog after 90 days. But again, I try to find the owner, I don't just say, oh look, I have a new dog! I think that is the difference between responsible dog owners and those who look at dogs as a commodity. WE love our dogs and they're a part of our family, they're not something we just throw away. Those that see dogs as a commodity see nothing wrong with stealing a dog from someone else, they don't love the dog, they want the status that comes with owning such a dog. Even if it's a cool looking mutt. |
We just had a report on the news last eve that dog thefts are up 50% this past year and the the most stolen breed is the Yorkie. They cautioned ppl who owned this breed to be careful. They also said if you are buying a Yorkie, stay away from the internet (esp. Craigs List and the like) bc a lot of stolen dogs (esp. Yorkies) are sold on these sites at very low prices, along w a fictitious story about rehoming due to hardship. What is wrong w ppl? |

Lots of good suggestions! I know many people say that they don't want to give it to the local pound for the things you mention, but many pounds will take your number and even a picture of the dog for their bulletin board. There are also many online resources to help in finding the owner. I have no problem with someone keeping the dog if the truly have made in effort to find the owner. For those of you with microchips, make sure your vet reads it yearly to see if it's still working right. |

Nancy has some really great ideas; if you find a dog and are scared to take it to animal control take a pic of it, drop it at animal control for their FOUND dog list & then take it to any vet's office to get it scanned for a chip-but beware in the mean time many dog's (like all of mine) have allergies, medical conditions & special needs. |
