Smelly yorkie question Hi. All what do you do between baths to keep your babies smelling fresh? Is baking soda on them safe? Choppa loves his back yard. How do i keep him from being smelly? |
Baking soda is not going to help. You could try a doggy shampoo with baking soda, but the one that PetSmart (Arm & Hammer?) gave me when Max was a pup made my fresh pup smell like yucky wet dog. I would recommend a regular shampoo and bath once a week. If your dog still smells, I would visit the vet and rule out health problems that are frequently the cause of bad smells. Petco sells some great products: Espree and SPA. Available online are PetSilk and Chris Christensen Day to Day, and many others. |
Puppy wipes are good. I use to wipe Kaji's paws after every trip outside. A rubdown with a warm towel helps too. Especially on the face. If he's extraordinarily stinky, I give him a bath. That usually doesn't happen unless someone else gives him a bath. It always seems like when someone else does it, they only wash him on top, and don't really go down into the coat. |
Jackson never really "smells" (unless, of course, he rolls in something outside) even if I don't give him a bath for 3 weeks. So I'd be concerned about a medical issue. Food can sometimes be a culprit and make more of a "doggy smell" than others. But yeah, I'd say a bath once a week with some good dog shampoo/conditioner should do the trick. |
Baking soda on the skin can be really irritating and change the pH balance of the skin making it more prone to opportunistic infections. I second the idea about asking the vet to rule out any type of infection that's causing the smell. If you think it's just from rolling around in the yard, then a quick wipe down with a warm wet wash cloth should do the trick between regular baths. |
I know that Ahi's eye goop can be stinky and of course her booty area. I wipe it down with a warm cloth every night and use a wipe on her booty everytime she poops. :) This seems to help a lot. |
I wash my dogs every week to 10 days. I wash their faces daily and comb them out. They never smell. If you are washing your dog approximately every week then there really shouldn't be a body odor and if there is you should see a veterinarian. |
What's smelly? If it's fur try more frequent baths and adjusting shampoos accordingly. Often people negate to consider breath salivation as an odor cause, Yorkies are known for their dental issues, also be sure your groomer cleans anal glands as needed, if you do your own grooming considering seeing a groomer for or your vet for this specifically and have them teach you how (I refuse to do the anals myself personally). Yorkies have glands on their feet that excrete odor, is there any reason your Yorkie would be marking scent a lot, feet wipes can also reduce odor. |
There's a scent that dogs give off after being outdoors that is a little stinky. It goes away 15 minutes or so of them being outside. Little kids have this same smell after playing hard outside. :p I read about once, but can't find the link. It's a real thing and they think dogs do it to tell other dogs in the neighborhood that they are around. Anyway, for something like this there are lots of temp sprays and fresheners that are safe, but this smell goes away on its own. If you think he has a real odor problem I think you should investigate. He should smell good a least a week after his bath. Sources of bad smells can come from filled anal glands, which can be dangerous, they could rupture. Also yeast infections can give off a funky odor around ears. Rotting teeth can give off bad smells, so it really behooves you to get to the root of problem, and not just mask it. |
I was told, and it's been my experience that Yorkies don't really small much, and when they get wet they don't smell like your typical wet dog. Unless he rolls around in something stinky Ruger generally smells pretty good and I give him a bath around once a week. For me, the problem isn't giving him a bath, but brushing him. You have to time it just right -- almost when he's dry but still just a little damp. Fortunately, he likes baths and getting brushed. I had to force both in the beginning, but now he jumps in the tub and jumps in my lap when I pick up his brush. I've never tried those wipes on him since it's easier to just bathe him. |
Peanut has a bad smell. He gets a bath 2 x's a week. He is highly allergic to fleas (I think we have finaly kicked this flea invasion!!) His allergies make him smell. He has scratched alot of his hair out.. (It is now coming back in nicely, YAY). So, an allergy can make them smelly too. |

I often use 'repellents' in conjunction but I totally understand what you are going through with that. Have you tried apple cider vinegar as a rub? A lot of ppl swear by eucalyptus oil but I think the smell is rudely irritating to dogs. |
DEFINITELY a weekly bath and Pet Silk Conditioner makes them smell SO LOVELY!! Give it a try... |
When I first got Lazzy he had fleas and quite a special funk to him and I bathed him immediately but I could still smell it a little. When it was strong, it was awful but after I could only smell it a little, it was kinda nice! I call it his "sweet little puppy smell". Now it is ALL gone and I am sad. I use a TIGI dog shampoo on him which I was attracted to because I use TIGI products myself. It must be killer effective because he has no dog odor to him AT ALL now. I want the sweet puppy smell back! :( |

He gets a bath 2x's a week with a cortisone shampoo, not very good smelling. But, helps witht he itching. |
I am very sensitive to smells so I was worried about getting a dog and the doggie smells that come with it. However, I have a strict daily routine that keeps Clover smelling nice but doesn't dry out his coat or skin. People who meet him say he doesnt really smell like a dog! Still has a slight animal smell, (I think clover would be upset if he smelled of just shampoo all the time) but rather smells like a clean cat! Lol His day starts with eye specific wet wipes for eye gunk, then wet wipes for his ear 'flaps' and a cottonbud with a drop of ear cleanser for the squiggly bits! But not too deep. If his ear smells bit I spray on a scented doggie antibacterial solution on the wipes first. After chews, sometimes his beard might get a wet wipe to stop it matting with the sticky residue. (A lot harder to dematt later) He also has drinking water additive to prevent plaque, Plaque-Off in his food and his teeth are brushed every night before bed. After muddy walks I wash his feet only, and drying him really well after baths help too. (Use a hairdrier if necessary) He only gets a bath if he's been out in the rain or rolls in fox poo - about couple of times a month usually. Also, a really sunny day is good at getting rid of smells too. The sun kills off some of the bacteria that makes things smell. (If you have tupperwear you can't get some funky smell out of, leave it in direct sunlight for half a day. Trust me it works!) I know it sounds like a lot of work but it works and I think its worth it! I hope this helps! |
When Hot Rod had his surgery i found a spray shampoo. This helped at that time since he couldn't be bathed for some time. i try to give them a bath every 2 weeks but I wipe the area around the eyes everyday with unscented baby wips. This seems to help with some of the smell. |
Thanks for all the suggestions. Choppa was just at the vet on Wed and he's healthy. Just that doggy smell from running and playing outside. I will do the wipes. |
I use Fresh 'N Clean Dog Cologne by Lambert Kay after each bath on Tibbe. His last bath was Sunday a week ago and I can still smell his cologne on him when he cuddles up with me today. It gets on the skin I guess and lasts and lasts. I do wash his face and toilet areas - and occasionally even his feet - fairly frequently between shampoo's. |
I always seem to end up with one doggie that has a funky smell for no reason. My bigger Yorkie has that now, even though we've had him almost 10 months and he's had time to adjust to top end food and regular baths and grooming so I am going to start him on some chlorophyll supplements. Those even work well for people with body odor problems and I have used them before with great results. They work from the inside out and don't just mask the smell and they are good for you or your pets. A blue-green algae supplement will often work, too, as they are high in chlorophyll. |
What kind of solution can I use for Ahi's ears? And what is the name or brand of the wet naps for her eyes? Please.....lol |

Bob Martin Ear & Eye Wipes for Pets its a perfect size for little dogs. Some wipes can be too big just for eyes and ears and it seems a waste. Perfect pocket sized packaging so I keep one in my bag as an emergency wet wipe! |
Careful with waterless shampoos they can be extremely toxic to animals despite being tested on them |
Your comments have really helped me but poor Crash will have to suffer the vet again I guess. He has occational fleas and has allergy issues but after I bathe him (only 1X per week) he can go outside for five minutes and comes back smelling like a wet dog or very fishy smelling. The vet gave me a spray before but it was not effective and the poor thing itches all the time. I will have to see about going to another vet I guess. |
I prefer to use Pet Head Poof! Magical Deodorizing Spray. It really keeps my Jezzabelle smelling good since she absolutely is terrified of baths. |
I spray Yorkie Sheen on my two when I brush them. Since I brush them daily, the Yorkie Sheen scent makes them smell great. :) I also give baths weekly and use a good shampoo and conditioner. You can find the Yorkie Sheen at Yorkie Splash and Yorkie Shine | Yorkie Shampoo and Yorkie Conditioner |
Oh glad this thread popped back up...anyone else use WEN on their dogs? The pumpkin smells great on dogs! After switching to WEN I'll never use anything else on my family or my dog's again. It's a process but seeing it's effects are incredible. |
We bathe Katie Scarlett once a week. We also give her a booty/woo woo bath after each visit to her potty pad. So far we haven't had any issues with her smelling. We use these PetHead 'Come Clean' wipes on her and she smells so good. I love to sniff her! LOL |

I agree the Yorkie Splash, Shine and Sheen stuff if great. Smells super and the good smell stays around for a good while. I bath weekly faithfully, and sometimes more often if needed. Cali really likes to be clean! |
