New to YorkieTalk and new fourteen week Yorkie. Hello, I am a brand new member and joined to learn more about raising my new 14 week old Yorkie puppy. Please share your feeding guidelines. The breeder in California that I purchased my puppy feeds his puppies Science Diet Toy food. We have only had our puppy for three days now and he is eating and playing and enjoying his new family. He is a sweet and cut puppy. He is only three pounds. Lila:animal36 |

is named Milow. He is so cute and spoiled. Do you spoil all of your Yorkies too? Lila:animal36:animal-pa |
Congratulations, I think dogs do better if you keep them on the same food at least a week, and even better a month. That way you can tell if any upsets are from the food or something else. People have strong opinions here on food; some people love Science Diet, while others hate it. I try to look for a food that has a named meat as the first ingredient. Here's a site that will help teach you some basic in nutrition. The Dog Food Project - Identifying better products I don't think it's good to switch too much the first few months, and if you do switch, add the new food to the old, and do it very gradually. |
Thank you for your greeting. I appreciate your information regarding Milo's feeding. The breeder gave me a sample of his food which is the Science Diet "Toy Food". I am feeding that as he has only been with us for about four days. I agree that I need to give him the same food that he has been eating with his breeder. Does he need an additional vitamins now? Welcome to yt! We love picts! |
Welcome!!! You are going to really love this place. There is so much terrific information on just about everything related to Yorkies and more :) :) :) When I brought Chloe home we kept her on Royal Canin the same as our breeder. I also gave Chloe Nutri-Cal. It isn't vital to give them suppliments I just preferred to add a little extra into her diet and she loved the stuff :) Congrats on your little one! I have always had dogs but Chloe is my first Yorkie and I have never had this strong of a bond with any other pup. They are such wonderful little dogs. I hope to see some pics of the little cutie soon. Tina :) |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk, you will find many people on this forum who are willing to give advice and help you along the way to raising your baby Yorkie. Please post a picture of Milo when you can, I love seeing the babies. |
Our breeder said the same thing that Nancy1999's said - free feeding in the beginning to ensure no issues with hypoglycemia - and it worked for us. Conggratulations! |
I have had my little gal on SD ever since I got her,she is 8 months now and weighs 3#6oz and is doing great on it. My advice is as long as they are doing good why change |
Welcome. You have come to a good place to read various opinions on Yorkie health, behavior, diet and care. On the health and diet forum you can read a wealth of opinion on dog foods. Many people are moving more toward feeding their pets a natural form of dog food. Many of the grocery stores and department stores carry nationally known foods that contain a lot of grain and little real meat for your dog. I would suggest reading as much as you can about the dog foods, their ingredients and what a dog's diet actually should be. Then make a decision on what is best for your pet. Read the labels. Just because a label says it is natural or healthy does not mean it actually contains good healthy ingredients. You need to be able to recognize the ingredient list as being really healthy and natural. I will tell you one thing; corn is not a natural food for a dog's diet! Best wishes to you and your new family member. Hope to see your pictures soon. |
:welcome4: HI THERE! and WELCOME TO YT!:welcome4: Kudos to you and the breeder for waiting till your little one was old enough to come home with you.:clapsmile Anything Nancy1999 has to say is golden so you don't need any advice from me. I hope you enjoy being a member and post photos soon. We are all suckers for those baby pictures. |

As a breeder I do recommend to families to keep Nutri-Cal on hand. However, I prefer Nutri Drops as it absorbs quicker in the event of a hyperglycemic attack. Food, plenty of rest, minimal handling and of course a stress free environment keep the possibility of an attack to a minimum. |
