lost my litter 0f 5 I have 4 yorkies all related. Mom and three children two females and a male(neutered) Since mom is already 10 years old and the girls 5, I had one of them artificially inseminated by a known breeder. she was well, had 5 puppies. First died first day, two on day two, third after 5 days and was left with a female that mom seemed very atached to. Realized she was not sucking much from mom and started feeding her for 2 weeks, all was well except mom was licking her tail, was raw, took to the vet and gave her antibiotics. I was scheduled to leave on vacation and my cousing conitnued feeding every three hours but after the third week seemed weak and not eating well. Emergency vet said she was dehydrated and was hydrocephalous. Puppy died two days later. I was nt here don't believe malformation, what could have happened? Is my girl too old to have puppies at 5 years old? I want to have some puppies because they're getting old. Should I have the other one get pregnant? Is she too old at 5 years old (first pregnancy) Could this have been the cause, her age? thanks, please answer soon.:( |
I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm not a breeder, and will never attempt to be one, but I have read on this forum from very knowledgeable breeders that you don't try a first pregnancy at 5 years old. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Is is possible for you to contact your pups breeder and get another puppy from their lines? |
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of the litter. Yes, 5 years is too old. The free puppy you're looking for on your other thread - are you wanting to breed it also? Or are you just wanting to have a puppy in the house? |
Also, I am not a breeder so I am not sure, but I agree with the above post. I have read that breeding should start at no earlier than 2 yrs old but have read that most do start around 2 yrs or around the 3rd or 4th heat cycle. Did you do a full physical exam on the mom before getting her pregnant? Do you know if she was healthy enough to carry babies to begin with? I don't know about you, but if I had a sick mom and puppy that wasn't eating on its own I would have postponed my vacation. I don't know what you were going for, but if it was just a leisure vacaction I would have postponed it to take care of my babies. As a breeder, you need to be there for the mom and puppies throughout not only the pregnancy, but the first 6 to 8 weeks of their lives to help them develop and make sure mom is being a good mom, to make sure puppies are healthy and eating right, and if any are sick, to help them either get better or if its too late, to put them out of their pain. I don't know if it was her age or not. But I don't recommend getting another one of your 5yr old girls pregnant artificially. If you want a puppy badly, there are a LOT of breeders around the world that have litters all the time that you could adopt from. That way you don't have to deal with all the heartbreak of losses of the puppies/mothers again. I wouldn't want to lose another one of my girls from giving birth especially not so soon after you just lost one. |

When the time comes, buy another puppy as a pet and enjoy it as a pet. The heartbreak in breeding is great and it is much cheaper and easier to just go buy another pet one from a reputable breeder. No, I would not breed your 5 year old again. Would you really consider putting her through all this at her age? |

As a exhibitor/breeder I would never breed a girl for the first time after the age of 3 and never breed a girl at all after the age of 5. After the age of 5 there are more chances for things to go wrong; genetically with the pups as well as for the dam. Your girls are still young....too young to think of replacing them.....spay them and neuter your male....... |

Questioning the motives of the breeder that artificially inseminated the female is neither here nor there. Bottom line it is up to the owner of the female to do what is right for her girl. |
lost my litter I thank all of you that replied to my questions. The breeder that inseminated my girl likes to do this because maybe it is more likely that the female gets pregnant, don't know. She did the mom the same way, I don't like it, can't stand it but wanted to continue my family. I don't have the money to buy one, because I spent so much trying to mate her the normal way and the owner of the dog charged me anyway even though the male didn't do anything, then I went to the breeder and paid her. Then after my girl had the puppies I went to the vet etc etc etc. My only male is neutered and it is their brother. Well I guess this is the end of the family if 5 years is too old to breed for the first time. Thanks |
Well....you still have probably 9 or 10 good years to enjoy the ones you have. :/ |
