Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice We're attempting to feed Gizmo Blue Buffalo Puppy, Lamb and Rice Formula to see if he likes it and to see if his pooping is a little more under control. We put it down tonight and he seems to be turning his nose up at it. :thumbdown I'll give it a few more days and see what happens. I love Yorkies, but if I could change one thing, it would be how picky they can be. Bah! Sorry venting. Discouraged. |
When you change the food, do so gradually by mixing a little more of the new food in with the old food each day. He might like the chicken and vegetable a little bit more. You could try that. Most seem to appreciate that variety.:) |

Yeah, we mix it. I don't think I remember seeing the Chicken and Vegtable. We got the lamb because we thought the less protein would be better with the constant pooping situation but who knows. All I know is I wish Innova didn't go to P & G:mad: |
We just switched butters from blue buffalo puppy lamb n brown rice last month. He liked it for a day, and after a couple of weeks we returned the unused portion to petsmart and started feeding him orijen. High protein but he has been doing great and loves it. |
I forget everything you've tried, but I do remember something about a very long list of foods. lol Is the P&G thing the only reason you aren't using Innova now? Honestly, all I can say is if I was in this spot, I'd bypass Blue (and most other newer kibbles that I used to like). |

Hi! I feed my Hana "Blue Buffalo Co. ~ Natural Chicken & Oatmeal recipe". She seems to like it a lot, however there are some days in which she will ignore her food...so what I do is I steam some mixed veggies such as broccoli, peas, & carrots. I chop them up and will mix her dog food with it. She absolutely loves it! Hana is now 6 months old and she still eats the same thing. I also give her Blue Co. treats etc... and give her veggies and fruits. I guess I just mix it all up! :) So far so good :) I hope Gizmo gives Blue a chance and ends up loving it :) |
Just fyi, Ellie's vet office sees a fair amount of dogs who are gassy on Blue (at least enough for one of the techs to take notice. lol). How is his tummy now? Is he having diarrhea? For how long? Well, let's start with, what foods have made his intestines unhappy and what were the ingredients in them? That is, has he shown sensitivities to any ingredients that happen regardless of brand (particularly the protein)? |

He seems to not like the lamb at all. No sensitivities to anything, just more eye gooey on some things. Only food he has diarrhea on was Orijen. Think that covers it. |
Gas is definitely not good. If he doesn't like this food, and he has gas on one of hte other holistic foods, and he has diarrhea on Orijen, etc., have you thought about going with something a little less holistic? Are there certain foods you are looking at now? Which ones? Part of the choice should be based on what is easily accessible to you. |

What do you think? |
For many reasons, I believe that is a great choice. That and the one I'm feeding Rylee (SD Nature's Best) are at the top of my list. If he doesn't do well on the current food, we will be going to RC also. And the nice thing about it is that it's easy to get at PetSmart. |

FYI Cammie the baby I had who had Cushings was on SD rx and it helped to much. So, I'm not one to turn it away. I'll let ya know how he does. |
Hope it works for Giz. IMO, it's a better option than anything holistic. ;) |

Used to be. You should see some of my old posts. Re-evaluated and changed my mind. IMO, it's a big marketing game with fear tactics thrown in by some of these companies. And they don't even do AAFCO feeding trials on their foods (Innova does). So I'll stick with the major brands. |
I agree on the wish of not so picky in the food department  but we may have hit on a winner and that's a big if, we have tried the blue buffalo stew mix either the chicken or the beef, the chunky kind. It's more like "people" food which Sprocket really likes and can't have LOL he thinks he IS people! We tried most of the make it yourself recipes from the web site here, no luck, first few bites yes then turn up the nose, most kibble, still a no no, the gas mentioned by some for the bb mix for us is not a problem, so mostly for us it's a rotation of the stew mixes, oh, no fish ones though I have to sneak in the fish oil drops as he has dry skin and won't eat the fish stew. Good luck with the diet thing, it will drive you crazy. :p |
Mine's feed on blue buffalo wilderness Chicken. They do great on it and I have had no issue with gas or upset stomach. I will say though that I steer clear from lamb period. When I first got my lab puppy(6 years ago) I tried nutria lamb and rice. The poor thing had such bad gas and diarrhea. The vet said that lamb doesn't settle well with a lot of dogs. Perhaps that is your issue? Try a chicken and rice formula. It's much easier on their tummies! Best of luck! |
My husband returned the lamb and brought home Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Puppy. Good news, I grabbed some kibble out when I came home on my lunch and Gizmo went ape, you know what about it. So, it's going to be interesting when I fee him tonight. Cross your paws. |
I feel your pain!! Try finding a food that several dogs like, it is even harder then. I tried so many (Innova, Merrick, Life Abundance, Nutro, Canidae, etc). Most they wouldn't even touch. The Life Abundance was really good but they still didn't care for it too much after a little while. They are now on the Blue Buffalo Fish and Sweet Potato, they've been on it for over a year now and they still love eating it. I did start them with the Chicken and Rice formula but noticed they were a bit gassy and chewing on their feet. I saw that the fish and potato had a lower protein and was good for those with allergies so I gave it a try and I'm glad I did. Not every dog can eat the same dog food so I would go with whatever agrees best with him. |
Where can I get this Royal Canin stuff? lol |

I have mine on the Blue Buffalo also but we do not do the lamb. We do the fish and Sweet Potato or the Chicken. I have a Boston Terrier who eats this also and he will run you out of the room if you feed him lamb. LOL. He seems fine on the other types with them. A couple of times a week we also mix in part of their can food stews in with the kibble. Mine think they are eating our food because I feed it to them right before we sit down to eat. LOL |
Ellie May....what are your thoughts on this food, I just added this food to my dogs diet this past week..it was either this or going back to sd, nothing else has seemed to work for all of my dogs...thanks :) Dick Van Patten’s SYNERGY Ultra Dog Formula Sorry that its off topic.. |

I'd feed NB, but I'd sooner choose something else. I have a soft spot for the company for whatever reason. They seem to have quality control covered. Dogs aren't dying on the food. But they don't have a veterinary nutritionist on staff and they don't seem to do any feeding trials? Why? Anyway, 16% fat and 28% protein is fine for a healthy Yorkie, IMO. But these are minimums and sometimes cmaller companies have issues with food consistency. So I'd want to know what the maximum percentages are. If this is much beyong 19-20% fat or 30% protein max, I wouldn't be thrilled. And it's full of meat, so full of phosphorous. Your call on whether that is good or not... I wouldn't freak out over feding it, but I also wouldn't choose to feed it. Really comes down to your feelings on ideal protein and fat % and the trust of the company that you do or don't have... |

I would be interested to know a good food . My 4 are eating Purina Pro Plan chicken and rice, small breed formula. We need the smaller pieces for Sassy. I am so confused with all the dofferent dog foods. They will eating amything, but with this one they are pooping less. They have had Eukanuba, Royal Canin, Rachel Ray, and now this. I am not sure what I am suppose to be looking for. I don't want any of the lower brands. I fed my Cairns, Kibbles and Bits, Pedigree, and Alpo and they lived to be 14 with no health issues. These are my first Yorkies and I want t o keep them healthy. I have noticed more brown gun and stains lately on their eyes. Hope I didn't take over this thread it just seemed like Ellie May was giving good advice. |
