Adding a second Yorkie My husband and I are both retired (I am semi retired but work at home)- we are home most of the time - we lost our two dogs (one 12 and one 14) within 6 months of each other and just adopted a Yorkie puppy. He is 4 months and a few weeks old - we have a dilemma and would appreciate any thoughts - we would like to have two Yorkies - have always had two or three dogs at a time for the past 45 years - I think waiting a year to add another puppy would be best, my husband thinks we shouldn't wait. I thought if we waited to adopt a brother for Cody he could help show him what he has learned -this is a big decision and would appreciate any thoughts you may have - thank you!! |

I am very sorry for your losses, and I'm glad you have a new little one to love. :) I believe there are benefits and drawbacks to each, having two puppies at once or staggering them a year or more. Having two at once is a lot of work, but they do have the benefit of growing and learning together. Staggering the two often means an adjustment period for the older/first dog. |
I just added a new Yorkie to my family. However, my first Yorkie is 4 yrs old and this one is one year old. Although there are times where they have a little girl fight, I wouldn't change having two of them for anything. Honestly, I see myself always having two now. They play and chase each other through the house. It is great to watch. And I have twice the Yorkie love! :) |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby. I think because you are used to having more than one dog ,it will work out just fine. I am housetraing two puppies now. If I could do it over, I would finish training one, before I got the second puppy. |
I think either way would work. If you have the time (which seems like you do) and the energy then 2 would work out great...training them together and such. Because 2 puppies can wear you out. But it's twice the love and fun. :) |
I LOVE having multiple pups, obviously, and now I have 4. Two are 3 years old and the 2 little sisters are 2 years. It is so fun having playmates, and they all get along great. They sure bring a lot of joy into your life..... so why wait? |
Thank you all for your kind replies - I think the biggest hurdle for me is to stop thinking about the boy we just lost - seeing another pup in person would help -emailed with a lovely breeder with pups available, but distance was the deterrent and made adoption out of the question - of all the dogs that joined our family thru out the years - the boy we lost was by far the most special to me - the tears will not stop flowing at just the thought of him. Our new little pup is a joy and he is working his way into our hearts rather quickly - yesterday for the first time, our new little pup Cody, cuddled next to me and rested his head on my lap and just looked at me and then fell asleep - I truly believe "our pets" are special gifts to us to travel at our sides along our jouneys in life - I am having a hard time letting go and letting in, but trying. Off to spend some time with Cody - he loves to help me water the flowers!! Thanks again! |
I think it would be best to get another puppy now while they are still young. I got Tessie at 13 weeks and added Hobbes 6 weeks later. It worked out great and it was just as easy to potty train 2. I am sad to hear of your loss. I had lost my 2 14 year olsd Cairn terries before I got my Yorkies. They have been a blessing, I now have 4 Yorkies. I have 3 Yorkies...and 2 of them are the same age, 10 months old...We got Harley after our 15 yr old Yorkie passed lasted Oct...he was only 12 weeks when we got him...and Bella was 12 weeks when we got her, she is almost 3 yrs now...I feel that Bella helped alot in potty training and training in general with Harley...Than 2 months ago I added Ivy Lou, who at the time was 8 months old ,same age as Harley...and I haven't seen any drawbacks at all with having to pups, the same age...Hubby, Bella & I love our new kids...they play so well with each other. I say go for it...its will be alot of work on your part, as far as potty training/training but, if your up to it..its well worth it...when your sitting and relaxing and watching your babies play, We love having 3 :D. |
Go for it...I always say there is room for just one more, mine bring me joy everyday, i love them dearly and they love me back times over |
I vote for adding another now. This way they grow up together. |

IMO (for what that's worth) is your husband is right, getting a second puppy that's only a few months younger than your current one makes for great doggie friends. One most likely will end up being the alpha but friends still the same. Getting a second Yorkie friend for our first was the best thing we ever did...now getting the third, then the fourth I've begin to question my sanity, it's nice, but I feel I can't give them all equal attention. With two it was easy to take them both out and about. Now when I try to take the younger two out the older two are jealous and it's chaos upon returning home. I know some people take all of their multiple Yorkies out and about at the same time, but I don't think I could. Two at a time is about all I can handle. Anyway, yeah, get a second Yorkie you'll be glad you did. |
