Thank you everyone who offered your opinion on our question of adding a Second yorkie pup now or waiting until next year. We decided it would be better for us to wait until next year to add a second pup. We take our current little guy everywhere we go and he is not problem - actually quite a joy to have with us. He is finally after two months of working with him, house trained and going outside - the thought of starting all over again right now was one of the deciding factors. We are thinking we will know when the time is right for us because we won't have such indecision - In the meantime we will continue to learn and enjoy YT. Thank you again everyone for sharing your thoughts - much appreciated. |

My Westie was about 2 1/2 when we brought Lucy home; he's 5 now; she's two and they still enjoy a good romp! |
We have two 8 1/2 month old Brothers. That equals 4 times the work. Would I change a thing? No. Go for it! |
You have the great advantage of being at home and you are experienced with dogs. That changes the ball game quite a bit. If you have the time and determination to train both correctly then I would not hesitate to get another one soon. If the one you have now is doing well with it's training he may still be a help with the new pup. I have an A personality fur baby and I am still kicking myself for not getting her sister when I got her. Now I just don't know how she would be with an addition. I guess if the personalities match it would be fine but if I had gotten her litter mate I wouldn't have to be concerned about introducing a new one. Since you have always had more than one dog at a time it should be easier for you to introduce a new one since you are home. Just my opinion. |
What can I say, I have 6 yorkies. Love em all. I also know the loss of loved one's. This is my second family of yorkies and they are like potatoe chips you cannot just have one. Good luck. |
So sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my little Poppy in March at the young age of 9. I thought I would not get another furbaby for years if ever. The joy she brought to my life over the past 9 years was worth every tear when I had to let her go. She was a wonderful member of my family. After a few months, I realized I needed to add to my family again. Poppy left such big paws to fill, I decided to get two new babies. I got a boy and a girl, same breeder different litters about 2 weeks apart. They are wonderful together. They play with each other and by themselves. A lot of people warned me about getting two dogs and the challenges that would come with two, specifically potty training. I have not really noticed any extra challenge with the two of them. When I praise one for going potty, the other wants the praise and goes also. So far my biggest challenge has been getting to chew two bones instead both going after the same one! Good luck and best wishes! |
