Layla is having her bump removed in a week- I have a question! Layla went to the vet yesterday and besides being told she had an eye infection and gained weight!! (it has been too hot here to walk in the mornings...) our vet said the bump on her back has doubled in size and Layla needs to have it removed. It is a sebaceous cyst (I believe) and she wants it removed so she only has to have a local instead of a general. ANYWAYS- she can't eat that morning and will not be eating all day- I am worried about her blood sugar levels. The vet initally said not to feed her when I got home but I mentioned I was worried about her blood sugar. I am worried Layla will be so out of it she won't want to eat (she will be given a sedative and my sweet girl is quite sensitive to medications). For those that have had their pups in for day surgery- can you shed some light on this. I am already dreading leaving her there for the day :( |
Usually it's no food after like 9pm the night before. If the vet is concerned about hypoglycemia, they can run fluids throughout the day. I'm sure she will eat by the next morning and that should be fine. Yellow bile from an empty tummy doesn't mean she will go hypo on you. Some anesthetics can be nauseating and not wanting to eat would be normal. You could force her to eat before bed after picking her up, but then it might come back up..... I would let the vet know you're concerned when dropping her off, ask if they will be running fluids, and not worry about it after that. Has she ever gone hypo on you as an adult? |

Nope she never has- she has only ever thrown up bile and then wanted to eat grass- no interest in treats. - I usually force a bit of yogurt in her and then she is back to eating and is normal. I will remind them again when I drop her off- lol if I can even think straight- I am pretty sure I will be a mess! |
Aww poor Layla!! I hope everything turns out ok and she comes out safe and healthy |

Aww... Warm thoughts being sent to you and Layla. I know how you feel about leaving them. My boys just had their teeth cleaned and had to stay the whole day (8am-5pm). I hated it and was a wreak all day. Will be thinking of you 2. Keep us posted on how it all goes. |

Uni had one on her head removed during her spay last Nov and biopsied and it was nothing. But she was under for her spay. I don't want her to go under just for the bumpy thing. :( Hope Layla is doing well! :) |
Hi Marci, Just seeing this. How did the surgery go? Hope Layla is resting comfortably. Please give her kisses and a big gentle hug from us. Nice to see you on here again! Bo |
Hi All, Layla goes tomorrow- EEEKKK. Capt. Noodle- Layla will just be frozen in that spot instead of being totally sedated. She will be put under a mild sedation just to keep her from moving. They will have to make an incision and stitch it up. Chrissy- the WORST part is having to leave there- I am so worried she will be upset when they put her in a cage. I can't wait to go pick her up but I dread that tomorrow will CRAWL by!! Bo- Thanks :) When I was talking to the vet about the surgery she said to me that Layla needed an e-collar but she thought I had a "special" one- I said YES!! I DO!!!! I hate that I have to use it but I love that Layla will be comfortable- she will have to wear it for a few days. I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow! Thanks for thinking of us! Layla also has an eye infection that is not going away so hopefully we can take care of that too! |
Sending prayers and positive thoughts for Layla and for you. Keep yourself busy so that the day goes by faster. What kind of symptoms does she have with her eye infection? Is it mucous? |

Well originally her eye was very itchy, closed a bit and there was sometimes green mucous but usually there was just a lot of it. So she went on drops last week and it has almost been a full week of them and she still has a lot of stuff coming out of it and it still seems a bit itchy. |

Max had an infection of unknown origin in one of his eyes and it required 10 days of a drop that was a combo steroid/antibiotic because the simple antibiotic didn't help. An ulcer and scratch must be ruled out before using this, otherwise damage can be done to the eye, or things can get worse. Testing for dry eye would also be a good idea. When the eye is dry, it will produce green/yellow mucous to protect itself. The Schirmer Tear test has to be done before the fluorescein stain. Just some thoughts. I know how frustrating eye things can be. |

Yes they did do a stain to rule out a scratch. The drops are an antibiotic/steriod. She mentioned something about dry eye possibly being a problem as Layla gets older but she said it isn't an issue right now- but just something to watch for. Thankfully she goes in tomorrow so maybe they can take a closer look. Today it looks ok but yesterday when I came home from the airport (i hav ebeen gone for 5 days so I really thought I'd come back and have it be perfect but my parents said it has been still quite goopy) it was very messy. |

Yeah, when Uni got her spay, she had to stay the night. I couldn't sleep at all! The dr and the techs were betting on what time I would come in. The dr starts seeing patients at 9am, and they bet 9:02. The only reason why I was in at 9:15 was bc of too much traffic! I don't have a morning commute, so I forgot to factor that in! LOL |
Sending prayers and hugs. It is never easy to leave them. Hope it all goes well |
We'll be thinking & praying for you tomorrow. Hope all goes well. Keep us posted please :) |
I dropped Layla off this morning at 8:30- she was so upset. But I was able to leave her blanket with her so I hope that helped. The vet tech just called (it is 1:30 here) and said she did great BUT the vet had to pull out a tooth that was almost rotting. I am speechless right now. Layla's teeth get brushed every morning and every time the vet looks at them she says they are amazing. I even asked in April if she should get a cleaning and she said no. I really hope the vet tech has the wrong dog. I would feel just awful if I knew Layla was a in pain and I didn't know or do anything about it. I can go pick her up at 4 and hopefully I can talk to the vet then. I will let you know how she is when I get her home. Thank you all so much! |

Sorry to hear about the tooth, though. I wonder which tooth it was? |
Very happy to read that Layla is doing well and that you will be bringing her home shortly. :) I hope too that the vet tech was confused and that it was not Layla who had a tooth pulled. |
Glad to hear all went well. |
Layla is home :) She is drowsy and whiney but she is in her crate sleeping. Her incision is bleeding a small amount but otherwise it looks quite good. Sadly I think I will have to put her softee collar on her as she is quite interested in licking it- but I am SO thankful I bought the collar so at least she will be comfortable and look cute :) The tooth that was pulled was a premolar- very very small so I could see how perhaps it was overlooked when I brushed it. Poor Layla, now our brushing sessions will be twice as long! Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts- I felt them today! The challenge now is to keep her confined as she thinks she is quite capable of running around! |
I am so happy for you that you have your little girl home resting comfortably. We want to see some "conehead" pictures when you have a chance because I am sure Layla does look cute. She always does, and it has been far too long since you posted pictures (I know you are very busy). :) Sorry that she had to have a tooth pulled. That inspires me to work a little harder (a lot harder) on cleaning my boys' teeth. Enjoy cuddling tonight with your sweetie. |
Well Marci I haven't seen you here for a long time, and I just saw this post about my little niece Layla. I have really missed her, and oh, you too ;-)! I'm sure happy she's back home under your wonderful care. Is her grandma and grandpa around to spoil her? Poor little munch! |
