Has anyone ever said your Yorkie isn't a REAL dog! My husband's uncle asked us, after telling him we had a Yorkie, "Why don't you guys get a REAL dog?":mad::mad: (insert curse words here) |

I on the other hand was so taken aback..that I didn't respond! auugh! |
I havent ever gotten that because Callie is bigger at 16 pounds but it sounds like a really mean thing for someone to say. I'm sorry someone said that to you. I think if someone said that to me I would say well this little "non dog" sure has a bigger heart then you and walk away but I think that would be harder to do when it its your husbands uncle. |
I hear it all the time - doesn't bother me at all. I usually reply that they're my attack dogs and they'll rip your ankles off if you're not careful! Darwin & Mabel are extremely friendly with people so my threat is never taken seriously. |

Yes- I usually just ignore them and feel bad for them because they obviously don't have the love of a Yorkie in their life. |
I haven't been told that, but I did have a lady in the lobby of my building Jump one time because I was carrying Riley and he moved.... and she said: OMG! I thought that you were carrying a stuffed animal!! We both laughed. :D |
Love the Taco Bell story! I don't care if it's a freakin' doctor who says that to me about my dogs next time, I'm gonna use that line! I made this video after the last time someone said that to me. http://youtu.be/R6yo5FUgs2Q |
My grandfather asks me all the time ''Is'nt that a rat?'' , it really pissed me off at first but its just a joke to him so I dont mind it today. Fido is rather big though, he's 13-14 pounds (6,6 kilograms), he's too big to be a rat :D |
All the time. But I just think to myself you have no idea what your missing. Besides I think of them as part of my family not a dog. They get treated like one of us. I love all animals big or small. Some people have no clue what it's like to love a animal. And what a sad life they must have |

I grew up with big dogs. Both of my parents didn't too much care for small dogs so that's all I knew. When I got my first dog on my own it was a cocker spaniel. Medium sized breed. I got a talking to from family about small dogs them but they ultimately said that small dogs work for me and my family. I think what my family likes most about my "little yorkie" is that he's not yappy and he is inexpensive to maintain. I've heard the Why not a real dog speech before but once they get to know Troy they quickly change their mind. |

Lol, maybe Fido is a rat then :p but his tail is too furry to be a rat haha , rats have naked tails :D I like rats, but not wild ones, only pet rats, the wild ones are gross and can be dangerous :p |

I get told that too. It really gets to me. I also get told that they are rat dogs. I tell them, yeah and my rat dogs will eat your ankles off. so back away...slowly. I can see Tink trying to eat an ankle with her 2 teeth!!! People are rude sometimes. One guy told me I needed to get a Pitbull and see what a real dog was. I said NO thank you. I don't have dogs... I have yorkies. They are family not dogs, thanks anyway. |
I've heard it a few times... but most of the time, it's in total joking manner by family members so I don't take too much offense to it. But it does amuse me. Our lawyer and family friend has two Boxers who has pulled the "my dog could eat yours" crap and these two dogs just stay in the house and in their backyard 24/7. Yet my "non real dog" spends his days hiking, running, swimming, doing everything a "big dog" should be doing. He's much more of a real dog than his dogs  |
I've told this story before on here..its in one of the threads somewhere. But anyways....This one time .....we were catching a plane and were at the florida airport and we were taking the elevator. The lady in front of us gasped and said "oh my i thought that was a rat". I smiled and said "dont worry, he thought you were a cow". :D I love snappy comebacks, especially when it teaches the person what they just said was really stupid. The taco comeback was priceless! IF I ever have the chance to use it...i will :D |
A couple of times people have said she is a "rat dog" & I say no, she's a ratter, wonder why she hasn't sniffed you out yet. It's really annoying that anyone would think they're not a "real" dog, it makes them sound like an idiot IMO. And besides, to me, she's not a dog-she's Princess, my puppy & my second born (to someone else). I did tell my mom & sis I'm going to grow out Princess's coat & my sis said "she's gonna look like a mop".:thumbdown Guess a long coat isn't the look of a yorkie aka a real dog. |
I have heard many times that Sakura isn't a real dog. And 95% of the people saying that is family members trying to get on my nerves. Whenever my dad goes to play with her he calls her a useless little curr dog but if he is playing with my sister's dog Lucy the border collie mix he tells her she is a dog. He only does it to get under my skin. On the other hand my brother has a doberman who is the whineyest dog I have ever met. Dad calls him useless too. The one time Thorn, the dobie, came to house he ran in fear of Sakura. |
Of course they are not a real dog, that's because they are sure they are human, LOL. |
Nope! I guess while I act like aTexas lady and I am one, I guess I project an attitude of one who brooks no unwelcome comments toward myself or especially my animals. You don't dis my baby ever. |
My yorkie weighs 5 lbs, and my husband made the remark that there's no way he would walk a dog "like that" down the street. What would the guys think.... (lol) He thinks I should get a "real dog" - a big German Shepherd or some other big dog. |
Love those come back! When Cali was in Hearing Dog school I heard a lot of those comments -- they ended rather quickly, however -- she really kicked butt in that course (much to some chagrin) and is a great, but little, Service Dog. |

Yes.. Remy has been insulted (on the streets of Chicago and Miami:eek:) but more often people come to us telling us how they LOVE their Yorkies!!! |
No, not as a put-down. I've received that comment in a nice way. As another poster has experienced, I was told by others that they thought Tatiana was a toy (until she moved). They thought was a stuffed animal (not a real dog). They were delighted and in awe when they realized she was real. |
My husband was sort of like that, we both grew up on farms, with big working dogs that stayed outside. At first Richard teased me about my Foo Foo dog. But, tiny Wilbee with his mighty terrier spirit and intelligence, won him over. Richard was Yorkie Fan until the day he died. We even had to sneak Noah (our Yorkie at that time) into his hospital room. The wonderful nurses helped us, so he could say good bye to Noah. |
