Is that a real ehm Yorkie? hey YT'ers, I have been wodnering if anyone on here have been asked if their furbaby is a real Yorkie? some of you know that My son was stolen from me a while back and I rescued another Yorkie. However, it never ceases to amaze me how amny people ask me if my son is a real yorkie. Here are some of gthe things that throw people-esp in nyc off 1) He is "Considered BIG" even though he weighs only 6lbs 2) He has thin hair, not a thick coat 3) He has longer legs than the other Yorkies I see around Manhattan which many call (Hold your breaths-those of us who know-teacups) 4) He has a long torso However, at the end of the day real or a "half-breed" he is MINE and I love him eternally for coming inot my life. I just wanted to know if there were other people on here who have been through this. thanks Coco Skittles Starburst Oquendo's father |
Yep, usually I just get asked "what kind of dog is that" I say...the kinda that stole my heart, :D You have a new love in your life...that you obviously love to pieces  Most on here have had something or other said to them....but we don't give a hoot....we all love our babies! I personally love them all and love the fact that each and everyone looks different. :) |
Worse yet is when they ask if it is a dog. Or when you say yes it is a Yorkie, they proceed to tell you it isn't, and why. I have heard: It is too big, the hair is too short/ not blonde/not fluffy enough, it's ears are not right, it eyes are too little/big, and my fav. It doesn't have a bow in its hair, I don't think it is a real Yorkie ! |
Yes, people often ask if Chloe is really a Yorkie, if I am sure she is not a morkie- because she has floppy ears. It doesn't bother me- I just don't care what other people think- so I usually just say "I get that a lot" and move on. |
Your baby son sounds like a pure breed silky terrier to me, I breed silkies my site is in my siggy, check us out, we are a VERY close cousin to the Yorkie...:) and very proud of it...:D |

Awwww that's perfect! |
Will you name my next dog for me? Love the names you come up with... So sorry your first son Hugo Versaci Fendi O hasn't been returned to you.:( I get questioned alot with Tinkerbell, bc she's a moose. 14 pounds, long torso, short legs... If I shaved her down I think she would pass for a Dachshund, lol. But her personality is all Yorkie, and she can be very sweet. And I love her too.:D BTW: New boy= Extremely cute! |
I dont usually get asked if she is a realy yorkie, but I might want to respond "yes very real. Barks and wets and everything". Guess that would be a bit much. |
It's ok...with the little one I watch...and some other passerby's they say...awww.cute kitty...lmao wth??? :D I think it's funny. Well from a distance she does look like a kitten. meeeeooowwwwwoooooooof! Roni~ |
I'm pretty sure that Bridget is a silky, albeit an extraordinarily small one. She hovers around 6lbs. She is a rescue from a breeding operation that sold Yorkies. I understand that unscrupulous breeders like to breed yorkie boys with silky females, and being smaller than average I'm sure she had her work cut out for her. Brie, also a breeder rescue, looks like a cross, more Yorkie and what is really strange is that Baby and Bug come from the same litter and Baby looks 100% yorkie with the teddy bear face and short square squatty body. Bug is built silkie. I think that some breeders have mixed them so much that you wind up getting throwbacks in litters of yorkies. The two breeds are close enough genetically without mixing them on purpose. None of it matters they are all bundles of love. They round out my six pack perfectly no matter what they look like. |

:thumbup::thumbup: We love them regardless. I also believe this to be the case with my Moka as well, a Yorkie/Silky mix, but I don't really care what she is. |
Yepp I get ask if Tibbers is a real Yorkie because he still has his tail and at 15 weeks is 5lbs 2 oz! |
some breeders have injected their inbred yorkie lines with silky blood to revive and try to clean some of the damage that inbred for smaller had done to their lines, I had to have my male and female DNA tested before even did the health tests on them just to make sure they were Silky and not silkshires.I find the practice very unprofessional, but I guess that if you breed purely for money, they do whatever is needed. is US the customer who has the responsability of asking the right questions and protect our pups..:) and lines... |
I think that is so sad :( I do not breed Im a new yorkie mom! But I think it's sad that people would just do stuff like that for money. |
I am frequently asked "Is that a yorkie? But it has a tail?!" I just laugh and tell them that the tail is the yorkie's cuteness meter... and as you can see my Gia's meter is at full capacity. :) (That usually shuts them up!) Truth is, she was the only survivor of her litter, and she almost didn't make it. So they didn't want to put extra stress on her little body by docking her tail. I'm so glad they didn't! I can't imagine her without it, now. :) |
Yes Quincy is 9lbs, he's too big to be a Yorkie. They don't realize that's just more to love. |

Op, I think at one point everyone gets asked that. My 7pm, floppy eared, soft coated yorkie apparently doesn't look yorkie enough. I've been asked, "what's that?!?" the person sounded really disgusted. Anyway, stupid questions deserve stupid answers right? I tell them he's a terrier pit bull mix baby, and I'm excited to see how big he gets! |
I would love to see a picture of your dog Im not convinced just by your description it is a silky. It could be an out of standard yorkie also |
I am 1000 % sure that Frimousse and Mollie Jade are Yorkies . Sometimes peoples ask me if Frimousse is a long coated Chihuahua . |

We have Allie and Noah already (from the Notebook) and I'm leaning toward Westley or Rhett but want something dazzling to go with it. Alliies full registered name is Millie's Allison Joy and Noahs is Millie's Noah David. Mille's Rhett ???? Or Millie's Westley ???? On the original topic, I had someone ask me if Noah was a chow puppy. Because he has a fluffy head, hubby says he reminds him of one of those chickens with the puffy feathers and none on the neck lol. |

Millie's Rhett Toric (Rhetoric) Millie's Westly Skies (westly Snipes) Or for more dazzle: Millies Rhett Dazzle, Sprinkle, Charm Millies Westly Cheer, Goober, or Whopper, Clinique Have fun with it. I usually use my favorite cologne hence Hugo Versace Fendi ( Hugo Boss, Versace Dreamer, Fendi) And for Coco (Coco Chanel) Skittles and Starburst are favorite candies! Use a candy or cologne that goes with the furbaby personality! |
Just a point of view: I am a breeder and have show lines, had show dogs ( i am currently not showing ) and i get a lot of comments from people similar or worse than the ones mentioned here. I take it as a wonderful opportunity to get people educated on the breed. I do not find any of the comments offensive or anything else. I believe most people, including some pet owners of yorkies, are not educated enough on dogs and breeds to have more knowledgeable conversations about them. I hope i make some of you laugh with this one: "One day i was with my husband and my sister walking all of our 6 yorkies by the beach! Each one of us humans had 2 leashes and 2 dogs, this lady came driving by twice, and had to stop and ask why were we walking these "cats" in leashes as if they were dogs???? hahahaha.... And she proceeded to count them and and asked again why we had 6 of these "cats" in first place???? " We all had a great laugh first, that was the first we ever got this question!!!! And looked at each other , our eyes asked "who is gonna educate her?" , so my husband went on and started the conversation, at the end that lady apologized and had a nice laugh herself. This has happened about 7 years ago at least, by the Beverly Dane st beach. I bet that lady became a yorkie lover after that !!! The most common comment and question i get is: " Cute puppy! What kind of dog is this? how big is it gonna get?" I love this breed and love talking about them with anyone who may want to listen, therefore every inquiry or comment may be an opportunity to just educate people about this wonderful breed i love. When i happen to be blessed by meeting someone who knows something the conversation takes a different turn, but that is often not the case. I was raised with different breeds of dogs and have a few generations of show breeders in my own family, still i am ignorant my self on so many breeds and some dogs i see i can not recognize the breed my self, would never be able to i do not think so. Just a word if i may: if someone say something about your dog that sounds offensive or ignorant please do not take it personally. This person probably is just that , ignorant about the subject. Instead, do your best to leave them informed and educated, you never know, you may just bring someone else to love this breed! That is always a plus! XOXO |
I have found in the short month that we've had Oz that most people have no idea about what breed he is. The first question I'm usually asked is "is he gonna get bigger?" and then "what is he?" They're never sure if he's a puppy or a full grown dog. I've not heard any negative comments or questions so far. A lot of "he's adorable".... no rat or cat questions/jokes ... yet! :animal-pa |
I'm getting this question more since Lucy got her hair shaved off for summer. She has super looong legs and her head looks line a lion! When people ask me if she's a yorkie; I just say yes - one with no hair! One thing I have learned is that a longer coat really makes those long legs look normal. Anyhoo, even though she is 5 lbs - I also get asked alot of she is a teacup. I usually just say - no - she's just a small yorkie. |
Well I live in the boondocks and get asked what Biscuit is all the time LOL! He ALWAYS gets called a yorkie right off the bat. I try to explain that he is a yorkie/chinese crested mix and people start getting glassy eyed LOL. If I saw him I wouldn't say yorkie right off the bat...I mean his hair is white? |
