Weight and Clothing...decisions..decisions..
 

I'm in a dilemma. My girl Ahi is only 10 weeks old today and weighs about a pound give or take an oz. I want to go crazy and buy her a lot of clothes...dresses to be exact. Should I go crazy and she outgrows the xxxs(teacup) size in a month...or should I go a size up? And by your experiences and opinions how big or little do you think she will be full-grown? I actually had a couple of my daughters outfits from her stuffed animals on Ahi...and she actually liked it. So I know dressing her won't be a problem. My problem is I like to spend and need to know if I should buy her size for now or go a size up. Oh my...i'm so confused. LOL :D Thanks for your input!

Well I have a boy and I bought him all kinds of stuff when I got him at 6 weeks he was 1lb and 6 oz now at 15 weeks he is 5 lbs and 2 oz and none of that stuff fits lol! SO my advice is to buy a few now but mostly wait because its a lot of money wasted.

Well based on the growth chart, she could end up to be 2 to 2 1/2lbs as an adult. Your breeder could probably give you a better estimate since they should know their lines but regardless I would NOT spend a lot of money on clothes. They change so much in the first year or two. She could easily surprise you with her growth.
She sounds tiny. I don't know how old your kids are but I would be EXTREMELY careful with children around a puppy/dog that small. They can easily get hurt. Many breeders will not sell a tiny one like that to a home with small children.

Yep - wait. Abbi was 1 pound 2 oz when I got her at 17 weeks old. She is now 2 and weighs 4 pounds (a tiny touch chubby), but nothing fits. I've had make her all new sweaters and clothes.

ohh I know I got addicted to ebay buying stuff for my dogs!

LOL. Yep...me too. The hubby was not happy when he saw the credit card bill the one month. LOL

When they are puppies it is so hard not to buy them everything. So much cute stuff, but if its not real expensive it doesn't hurt to have an outfit or two. Something light & comfy like a t-shirt. It'd help her to stay use to wearing clothes. I'd wait on anything expensive though, she still has a lot of time for growth.
(I need to revise my first sentence about it being hard not to buy everything for puppies -- my dog is 2 yrs old and its STILL hard not to buy them EVERYTHING!" These ladies need to quit making such cute dresses & bows!!!!! Well, ok, not really. :rolleyes: (I'm in the mood to find a cute, sassy dress for when Fall gets here.)

Yeah I love looking for the dresses and I haven't even got my baby girl yet she has 2 more weeks until she comes home lol! She already has 5 or more dresses. So I really am no one to give advice lol!

What would you buy for a people baby? Hmmmm, a few tshirts (less than $10 a piece if you shop hard) Try a 4 pk of Preemie tshirts from Babys R Us,they wont be to big for to long. Mina actually wears Carters size 3/6 month onesies to bed,she is almost 7months and weighs 4.5 lbs. Babys R Us also has beautiful baby blankets that are OH SO SOFT as well.

Ok thanks...i'm not the only one addicted to dressing up my new baby. I have put my foot down(kinda lol) at buying her 7 dresses with matching bows for under 100 bucks off of ebay. There is this seller that makes the most cutest clothes (cool fabric) and bows. And if you spend $50. shipping is free! lol Thank goodness Hawaii is pretty much cool and breezy year round. ;)

Valenie...I wish my hubby suggest that I buy myself a new outfit. lol My new baby is no different from my skin babies...my kids literally have 5X more clothes than I do. But it's my choice..lol I rather spend on my kids than myself.

Joanne...I know the controversy on it..but I got my baby from a pet store. Here in Hawaii Yorkies are very very hard to come by and even when I got my baby I tried to ask the million questions about the parents but no info. could be given. She is not even papered but was sold as a purebred yorkie. It didn't even say that she was a toy, mini or teacup. The rules to get any animal esp. dogs into Hawaii is VERY strict. Most of the mom and pop pet stores here only buy from local breeders. We only recently acquired a couple of big name pet stores. Which I choose not to go to because they are a rip off compare to the little stores. (example: I bought a toy from small store for 4 bucks....PetCo was selling the exact same toy for almost 11 bucks! wtheck u know?) I also was hoping that she would be at the least 4lbs., i'm now thinking otherwise. But no matter what we love her with all our hearts! :D

I would like to know the ebay seller. Mina wears clothes every day and I am always looking. There are two thread out there right now on clothing when,where,why and on storing clothes (some great ideas). There are also some threads in the library,a PDF file you can download and a Ytube video you can watch on grooming your dog yourself. Mina does not go to a groomers. There are to many horror stories about groomers on YT. I have groomed poodles off and on for 40 years and yorkies are SOOOOOO much easier to care for. When she was tiny I would wait until she was asleep to snip here and there.
All yorkies are toys,the other terms are used by stores and some breeders,I guess to catch your attention. There is a growth chart (possibly in the library here) that will show weeks of age and current weight then you can go down to 22weeks and gives you a weight. They are reasonably accurate,Mina followed it exactly. After 22 weeks she didnt gain much more weight,but she did grow physically. She will be 7months on the 27th and weighs just under 5lbs. She wears mostly XS.

Yeah I would prefer to learn and groom her myself. With 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls...washing and cleaning should be no different in difficultness. lol Even my boys had/have long hair that I need to "groom" everyday. :D
It really didn't dawn on me that she would be this little. I mean I knew she was tiny but when I seen her sold as just "Yorkshire Terrier" I kinda assumed 4-7lbs. I'm hoping she'll be at least 4 and if more than the better. But she isn't than it's ok, but I'll have her fixed. I don't want to breed her if she's too tiny. I would be too scared for her. Your puppy sounds the perfect size.
Do they have a lot of clothes for her in your area? Where around Ft. Worth do you live? I visit there every few years...and I'm about due for another visit.lol My mom and dad lives in Flower Mound. I actually love it there. Oh btw..I thought it was so cute that my mom called the other day and my 5 year old DD answered the phone...when she hung up she said "Gramma called and said she didn't want to talk to you...oh and she bought Ahi a bathing suit" I was like HUH? Thinking she was making up stories or she got the info wrong....well I called my mother and she said that she DID want to talk to me(which made my mom laugh) and my DD was right and my mom did buy Ahi a bathing suit. I was cracking up laughing. My crazy hair-brained mother. Gotta love her...she is the ultimate furbaby loving person. :rolleyes:

oops lol my 3 year old is always up here and he causes lots of typos!!! :)

I know how cute dresses and bows are. I would resist spending a lot until later. Gracie is still small about 4 1/2 lbs but she out grew all her xxxsmalls very fast. She is 2 yrs old and wears an xsmall in most things now.

I got coco in March and i bought her two sweaters because it was still very cold...

She owns total of 5 clothes right now.

I will personally wait until shes about 6-8 months to go crazy with clothes because i personally think its a waste of money to get her clothes that she will outgrow soon...

I am going to wait another month before i go crazy and buy her clothes. :)

Congrats on your new pup! Butters was 1.3 lbs when we got him at 9 weeks. He's now 8 months and weighs 4 lbs. We think he'll get to around 5 lbs since his growth progression has slowed. I'd say wait until she's closer to full size to buy clothing because you'll be surprised to see how fast our little ones grow! In a month, the stuff you buy now probably won't fit her anymore...good luck with your baby!

Washing and brushing your furbaby isn't much different than the other kids. I have 3 of each they are almost all grown,but I still cut everyones hair. Its cheaper to go see Mom than a hairstylest. I work for hugs and doggie kisses.

Mina doesn't have a swimsuit even though we have a pool. She likes to skinnydip. She does have alot of dresses,sunsuits and pjs.

Mina does not have a lifejacket. We were think of going to the beach for vacation and at that time I considered getting one. She does swim in our pool,but I am always right beside her with my hand under her.

I was just wondering because I heard that small dogs drown easily and that is way scary to me.:eek:

I can see how they would get tired easially and just go under. Our pool isn't very big and she cannt get in without help. One of our poodles has to of been taught not to get in the pool unless someone is there and I still leave a float in it at all times just in case,not that ANY of the dogs go in the yard without people supervision,but stuff can still happen.

I don't think I'll get a life jacket for her. I'll just set up the kiddie pool for her and leave the big pool for the kids. The ocean here would just be too rough and scary...heck it scares me at times. lol
