Small yorkie and large yorkie! Does it work?
 

Hello, new to this site, I have a teapot yorkie about12pounds and am wanting another. I have found one someone is wanting to rehome she is just 3 pounds almost a year old. Everyone says he would hurt her cause he is so hyper and big! What's your opinion? My baby teapot boy is Bailey and he will be two soon! He is neutered and she will be spayed. Thanks! Bays Mommy!:)

I know many pet owners who have large breeds and Yorkies together...I used to have Doxies...but even though their weight was in the 8 to 12 pound range, they had very short legs and never jumped on the Yorkies....the Yorkies jumped on them, but they were stronger and could take it.

3 pound Yorkies can be frail or sturdy...a hyper Yorkie at 12 pds can be a handful.

When I was looking for my second Yorkie, I was told by experienced breeders like YorkieRose that different size Yorkies live and play together safely --- but, it depends on the individual personalities of each.

A hyper 12 pound Yorkie around a 3 pound Yorkie would concern me.

I have 4 Yorkies, they are 10 months to 2 1/2 years old. they weigh 6lbs- 16 lbs. and play safely together all the time. Sometimes they have a little argument but never hurt each other.

I have a 10.5# (poor guy is on a diet & exercise program now) and a 5.5# but they are wonderful together. 3# is awfully little though. I would think they would be more delicate than the a standard size.

I've been on both sides of this coin. My first Yorkie was a 9-pounder, and when I added a frail, senior 4 pounder to the house, the 9-pound 2-year-old became toy possessive and delivered several beatings. None causing serious injury, thankfully. I addressed the problem, and it got better, but I never allowed them unsupervised time with toys and they never learned to play together. Still, it was a manageable situation and I was able to trusty them alone in the house when we were gone.

When the 4-pounder died at age 13, I got a wee puppy who would grow to 4 1/2 pounds. I was again terrified of what my 9-pounder would do. Initially, there were a few skirmishes and again no injuries. But a year later, the 4-pounder was running the house. Now, I have to protect my 9-pounder from her relentless attempts to play.

So I agree with Maximo. It depends on the individual personalities, but it can be managed with vigilance. Initially, if the bigger dog seems too exuberant, I'd step in regularly and let him know it's not allowed.

Thank you everyone for the welcomes and comments. I think it will be best for me to not adopt that sweetie! They are just so sweet and hard to pass up but I need to do whats best for both dogs!:)

I think that's a very wise choice. I'm sure soon enough you'll find the perfect yorkie to add to your family. Oh, and you should post some photos of Bailey!:)

Hi there and welcome to YT. I think that you are making a very good choice. My yorkie is of 7pounds. My friend has a tiny of 3pounds. The size of them are huge. I do not think i could ever leave them alone together and feel 100%safe.

We were looking for a larger yorkie as well - because we have Ringo, the 16 lb, hulking Westie!

We ended up with Lucy - who at 5 lbs, is still very tiny, compared to Ringo. Honestly, he could hurt her if he wanted to and his play is much rougher than hers. He could hurt her even inadvertently - but they are rarely alone together; someone is most always here.

I can't imagine bringing home an even smaller dog to try and play with Ringo. When he is trying to chase her around - we encourage him to put a toy in his mouth because his 'play bites' are so much rougher than hers. She seems to like it though because she is always bugging him and pawing at him to play. Just requires caution.

Sounds like you have made your decision for now - and it seems to be a good one. When we got Lucy - we asked for the largest puppy in the litter and she was it!

I had a 2 pounder along with a 4 pounder and a 11 pounder, worked fine for us

My little 3 pounder Jilly, who was my second Yorkie, just hated my regular-sized Yorkie pup I got to keep her company during the day while I was at work. Teddy was smaller than Jilly when I first got her but as she grew, she outsized Jilly very quickly and Jilly turned off, prefering to live her life solely on the back of the den couch and growing into a nervour wreck. I finally after trying everything all of the experts recommended, had to find Teddy another home. We hadn't had Teddy that long and it broke my heart to have to rehome her but my baby Jilly was descending into her own private hell, chewing out her hair, failing to eat, losing weight and growling every time Teddy even walked close to the couch whose back she lived on. And Jilly could not be coaxed off the back of the couch! She just laid there and brooded. It was heartbreaking for all of us but I could not see Jilly make herself sick anymore and found Teddy a wonderful home. From the moment the couple left with Teddy, Jilly began to live her life again - came down from the back of the couch, ate, slept and resumed her regular life, gained back her weight and was a happy camper once again! Didn't work for my little prima donna but it does for most. Most Yorkie LOVE other dogs. I know Tibbe would LOVE another dog in this house.

Fido is somewhere about 15 pounds and he has a friend that is 4 pounds, its no proplem ! he doesnt hurt him :)

hi welcome to yt, i have a 1yrs old 20lb yorkie, yes full bred lol and my smallest beau is 5yrs old at 4lb, they are great together, sometimes gino thinks hes beaus size:rolleyes: but i never have problems

My Tibbs is 3 lbs right now at 16 weeks and my little girl will be maybe 3 lbs full grown and the breeder said they would be fine!

There is a 7 lb difference in mine and they do okay together but I dont know what the fragileness is of a 3 lber

Mina's brothers and sister weigh 14lbs,10lbs,8lbs,5lbs and 70lbs. They all do well together. I have always tried to introduce new members slowly. I purchase a pac n play or an expen so that everyone can see each other,but cannt touch unless supervised,until everyone gets used to each other.

Oh ya and the 30lb grand puppy that comes to visit and is like a MOOSE running through my house. She is more apt to take me out at the knees than Mina.

Mine all do well together and they are all yorkies of different weights.

Older and younger Yorkie
 

You asked about the older Yorkie getting along with a younger one. I have one that turned 12 on June 24, (about 13-14 pounds) and the younger one is right at 2 years old. She weighs 4-5 pounds. They play together at times but most of the time the older one, Angel, ignore B-Baby, the younger one. I really don't think that you will have any trouble as long as the older one knows that you still love her and spend some time with her, as always. Spend quality time with the baby and you can even try playing with both of them at the same time. If this does not work right off, wait a week or even two and try it again. I honestly have no trouble. Good luck...

I have a 60lb lab girl named jasmine a 11.5lb 16month old girl yorkie named Lily and a 3lb yorkie boy who is 12 weeks named logan and they all get along great :0) here is a pic of Logan and Jasmine :D little and large

My shaffer was a teapot almost 11 pounds my Cooper is about 4, they always got along super, Cooper has some dog friends he is always the smallest but gives the big digs a run for the money, you can see a photo of them in my album together I think it depends on the dogs why not try it see how they like each other in a dog park or neutral place?

Ours get along great too. I have a tiny one at 4lbs. and our little girl is about 7lbs. She has been on a diet. When they get to playing I just remind Kayla, easy, easy. Play easy with Dudley. Even my 2 schnauzers do great with him. They never bite but may nudge him alittle hard at times and when I tell them to play easy, they do.

My first was Jersey Boy he is 9lbs and I wanted a second similar size. As life would have it my second Brielle turned out to be 3.5 lbs. I have the best of both worlds:D They are so good together. She can be the beast not him.lol

Personally, I think it has more to do with the meshing of temperaments more than size.

130 pound Difference. it can be done but takes a lot of front end work. Make sure the small one does not beat up on the big one.

We have four dogs........a bassett Bailey who is 6 and about 35 lbs (very small for a bassett, she has chrons disease) a 12 yo min pin/ig mix who is about 20 lbs, Preston - four yo yorkie 16 1/2 lbs and Paisley a 6 lb yorkie. When we got Pais I was VERY nervous. We brought her home at 1 lb, and she seemed so LITTLE that I was scared to death! She is the ornery one of our pack! She did get hurt once recently when they were all chasing a squirel and got barrel rolled. :(. Most of the time they are all GREAT together and she holds her own very well, but now I make sure she is out of the way when the chase is on for a bunny, bird or squirel. She sure doesn't get out of the way on her own though!

I have only one dog, so I don't really have anything to add, but you guys sure did post some awfully cute pictures!

I agree with you. We have one that isn't quite 4 and a half, one that is 5 and a half, one that is almost 10lbs. and our older guy is 23lbs. They all do very well together and they have never hurt each other.
