What is a biewer yorkie?
 
I'm only an occasional poster/browser on this forum as I no longer have a dog, but when browsing this forum recently I've come across references to 'Biewer' Yorkies. This is a new term to me - can anybody tell me please what exactly this refers to?

Im not a biewer expert but as I know it they are cousins to the yorkie. They are white tan and black and they originated in Germany. There are several different clubs so there are different phillosophies about them. They are stunning they also haVE an undocked tail

Are the biewer yorkies recognised by the American Kennel Club (AKC) or the British Kennel Club (KC)?

If not, then surely they are technically MONGRELS. Pretty-looking mongrels all the same, but still mongrels.

We have owned yorkies all of our married life (42 years) and after losing one of our last ones, we found out about the Biewers, through a YT'er! They are wonderful, wonderful dogs. We now own two and wish we had a dozen!

I see you live in England. Have you searched the net to see if the BKC recognizes these cuties? They originate in Germany - your neighbor.

Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. There are tons of breeds in the world that are purebred and are recognized by their country's kennel club. AKC or BKC may not recognize them but they are still purebred. AKC is constantly adding breeds to the list they will recognize (Foundation Breeds program) because they know these breeds who are recognized as purebreds by their country can also be AKC registered after following their program.

Biewers are not recognized by the AKC but they are purebred according to their German registry and there are some wonderful breeders here in the US doing great things with their purebred dogs.

What is a Biewer ? OH MY this is a controversial topic. It is just my opinion but I think, they are beautiful pure bred Yorkshire Terriers that carry a mutatation and or recessive gene that affects fur color and possibaly other physical features. At risk of sounding ignorant , I have read everything I could about Biewer Terriers and Parti colored, Born Blue, and Red Leg Yorkies. It is my understanding when DNA tested they are Pure Bred Yorkies. I am always open to be educated by people, who know more than I do. I respect the right to develop new breeds, because once upon a time all dogs were mongrels and WE made them what they are by selective breeding programs.

They are NOT mongrels (I'm of the opinion that NO pup is a mongrel... that just sounds mean. If you must call non-purebreds something, mixed breed would be more appropriate).

Biewers come out of Germany. Here is a link to the American club's website that explains more about them:

No not mongrels they are recognized by german clubs. I think different clubs are trying to get the AKC to recognize them

Are you mixed breed??? If so, surely you're just a mongrel...

Can I ask a silly question here? Is Biewer pronounced Bi-wer or Be-wer? I just want to make sure I am saying it correctly, and ie can make both a long i sound or a long e sound. Thanks!

This is what I thought too. They are from yorkie's who carry a certain gene. I think they are beautiful, and I can see the yorkie in them easily. I never thought that they were a mixed breed. It is nice to know that Germany recognizes then as their own breed. I hope that AKC will too.

Oh dear, I do seem to have set the cat amongst the pigeons, don't I?

I have to admit I've not checked with our Kennel Club here in the UK, but I didn't see any parti-coloured ones when I was at Crufts earlier this year.

From what I understand these Yorkie-types have been bred with dogs such as the Shih-Tzu by unscrupulous breeders in order to get the black and white colouration. Biewers may look pretty, but if they've been produced by a backyard breeder without thought or consideration to necessary health testing of the parents the pups are just going to be a potential cause of vets bills to the future owners.

Personally I wouldn't choose to buy a 'Biewer' yorkie; I'd much rather go to a breed rescue and give a home to an unwanted/stray that needs a home, rather than be responsible for adding to the canine population of the UK.

Biewers are not backyard breeder/mill creations bred without regard to health or standard. They are recognized (in Germany) and are their own separate breed. Happy, healthy, and so loveable when purchased from the correct breeder just like any other dog.

It is just like for Yorkies, you have to buy your breeder. Purebreds (like Yorkies) can come from backyard breeders with health problems and issues just like any mix. It doesn't matter WHAT dog you buy, it matters what breeder you get them from. Buy from a bad breeder and you run the risk of getting a sick puppy. Period.

Before you go running around comparing backyard breeder pups to the Biewer. Do your research.

They aren't "Biewer Yorkies" by the way, they are Biewer *Terriers.* Related to, but separate from, the Yorkie.

Rescues are always a good choice. No matter what. :) :thumbup:

Well it depends on who from which club answers because some say biewer yorkie and some say biewer terrier and thats whole other controversie in itself

There are (I think) 3 different Biewer clubs in America. Here's the links for them. You will see that 2 state that the Biewer is a separate breed from the Yorkshire, while one uses the term 'Biewer Yorkies".

One curious thing. I see Biewers in the Yorkshire Terrier Nursery forum and also the Yorkshire Terrier For Sale forum. If they're a separate breed, shouldn't they be in the "Our Yorkies Brothers and Sisters" forum? Just asking...

I knew it was pronounced "Biva." However, I must admit that I feel silly saying "Biva" because I feel like I don't sound German enough, haha. :D

I do not start threads in those sections as I do not breed. However, my feeling is that since they are related (on the site I posted earlier YT's are referred to as cousins), they are still in the YT family. Thus, I still think it is fair Biewers are included in the YT areas of the forum.

In addition, as others have expressed, some feel the Biewer is just a different colored YT. I'm certainly not the authority and I'm not the only one with an opinion. My opinion that they are a separate breed, is my own.

However, if you'd like to contest that Biewer posts be moved, I'm sure you could send a message to Admin. They decide how to organize the posts after all. :)

The point of my post wasn't to start a debate on Biewer vs. Yorkie and how they relate to each other. It was to refute the post linking Biewers directly to BYB's/mills and poor breeding because I do not feel that is fair.

All in all, I love ALL pups. Mixes, purebreds, Yorkies, Biewers, Maltese, Poms, Labs, etc. They are all great and deserve love and affection. However, it is always buyer beware no matter what kind of pup you are buying!

I have a dear friend that raises the Bewier Yorkies. They are yorkies, NOT crossed with any other breed. They come from 2 Yorkies that carry a recessive or mutated gene. And they were pulled aside to raise puppies to get this coloration. The ones my friend raises do have the docked tails. They were brought here from Germany. They are precious. They are like the yorkies we are use to except for our coloring. HUGS, Wanda

Not sure if you are saying the ones with docked tails came from Germany or the ones your friend has bred...regardless tail docking is illegal in Germany and the only disqualification in the confirmation ring. Both here and abroad.

Some of us call them Biewers. They are a toy breed, recognized in the U.S. as a rare breed dog, in the rare breed show venues.

This is what my understanding is. I knew that they are not a cross of shih tzu. The shih tzus are from China . And not all shih tzu are black and white. :rolleyes:
