Should I take Maddie back to the breeder??? I am going CRAZY!!! I am crying as I write this cause I am so stressed and overwhelmed.. In case you haven't heard the whole story, please check my other posts about why I brought her home so early.. I got Tucker at 8wks old and have never had any problems out of him. He has been doing great on his housebreaking for a month now with one accident....Until Maddie came home.. She is only 6wks old and I got her from the same breeder which means that she and Tucker were raised the same way until they came home with me.. I had 2 options which were to take Maddie, or they were going to keep her for breeding... I completely believe that they take great medical care and grooming of their dogs, but the dogs live in a kennel with runs and then are crated at night in individual crates in the heated building... But they get no human contact besides when they are groomed, bred, or put in their crates.. Because I knew that she would never get loved like Tucker if she stayed there, I decided to get her... I visited her every week and wanted to take her asap...Now she is home at 6wks which was as long as they would keep her but she is crying ALL the time and walking like it is her first step and always looking for something to suck on and she wants to snuggle like they do with littermates... My question is, since Tucker was fine at 8wks even having no human contact until me, should I beg the breeder since I have alrady paid for her to keep her for 2 more weeks and atleast let her be with her sister that they decided to keep. She hates Tucker and will not let him near her cause he tried to comfort her and she goes crazy.. Now he also tries to sit on her so I don't know if has good intentions or not... She just doesn't seem like she is even 6wks, more like 3 wks.. I know she is 6wks cause I have visited her since she was 3 days old but she is NOTHING like Tucker was meaning I could get his attention by making any noise and she just walks around and cries and is not real steady on her feet and I am going crazy.. My husband is telling me to either take her back to the breeder for a couple weeks or sell her cause he can't stand her crying and the fact that Tucker is now peeing and pooping everywhere since she got home..(he's not a dog person).. I am desperate to keep my sanity and lokoing to lose this headache I have had since Friday night. I even bought Bayer stress and tension and that does not work... ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME!!! |
I would let the breeder keep her longer then try bringing her home again - it sounds like she is just not ready to be away from her mom ...Do you think she's actually younger than 6 weeks ? We got my Chanel at 6 weeks and it really was way too early - (we didn't know better) but she didn't do what you're describing - she never cried and ate and played just fine - I think maybe she really bonded to me because we did get her that young but I never saw her trying to nurse or act like she missed her mom - Bless her heart - all yorkies are different and the breeder should have known she wasn't ready - or maybe she isn't the age this breeder said she is ? I know it will be hard but if it's a GOOD breeder - she'd want to keep her longer so she can be ready to be on her own without being so stressed.....GOOD LUCK !!!! |
I had one that I brought home at 6 weeks and he became stressed and got sick. I would definitely take her back to the breeder and have her keep her for awhile. |
Well I first saw Maddie when she was 3 days old and picked her out of the litter and visited her every Friday so I am positive that she is 6wks, I am just afraid that the breeder will say no and then I won't know what to do...Is there a huge difference between them being 6wks and 8wks cause when I compare her to Tucker when he was 8wks I can see a huge difference...I am soooo DEPRESSED...My head is just spinning and my eyes hurt from the pain... |
Oh sweetie - I wish I could help you - I bet the breeders here on this site can help you more - but my heart would be broken too listening to her cry ....Maybe pm a few of the breeders here and see what they say ? |
I really dont think two weeks is gonna make that big of a difference if you could get the breeder to keep the pup untill 10 or 12 weeks I think you would see a noticable difference. |
I would check with the breeder first to see if it is possible to keep her for two more weeks. IF not, get some of her blankies or your old t-shirts and see if the breeder will rub some of the smells from her and the mama, pups, daddy and so on on them. Each pup is different, just like each child is different. They all mature at their own pace, that 's why no 2 are alike. My mother had a pup ready to go at 6 weeks, but we kept him until he was 8. Her next liter, they weren't ready to go until 8 weeks and one not until 10 weeks. If she is a good and caring breeder, she will keep her for another 2 weeks so that she can mature a bit more and thrive into a healthy lil girl. Good Luck and I'll say a prayer for you and Maddie. |
It might break you heart, but you should bring her back for the minimum of 2 more weeks, I would shoot for 4 weeks! |
I agree I got Cali at 9 weeks and she was too young but after 2 weeks she really settled in and was over her health crisis. I would see if the Breeder could keppher until 10-12 weeks. Keep us posted. I know how stressful it can be with these babies when their not doing well. |
Oh my word! Amanda........ Oh my word! Amanda........ I have not gone back (to other messages) and read your reasons for bringing this puppy home early. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHY? What matters now is saving this baby and I don't think you should depend on an uncaring breeder to do that. ....please do not be offended.....BUT THIS BREEDER SHOULD BE HUNG UP BY HER TOES. There is no reason short of death or serious illness for a breeder to release a puppy THIS early. I DO NOT THINK THIS PUPPY IS 6 WEEKS OLD. It tells me she is not breeding for the good of the breed.....neither does she care one whit about this puppy's welfare. Please excuse! my rant.....but I see this all the time. I try to educate puppy "searchers" as to what to ask and look reference buying a Yorkie. Sometimes they purchase a "cheaper" puppy...and then the headaches start. The bad (or good) thing is....depending on how you look at it.....is I AM THE ONE THEY CALL TO SAVE THEIR BABY.....a baby that should still be with it's dam.....the most heart wrenching is when the puppy dies within minutes while I am attempting to tell the owner how to save it. It is so heartbreaking......it enough to make one want to kill....thus my rant. I could go on and on about breeders like this....from what I read in your message.....there was no reason on earth to let this baby go early....and no amount of pleas from the buyer would have changed my mind. And as for the kennel setup.....this really sounds to me like a mass-puppy producer....one who in no way has the health and welfare of puppies OR adults foremost. Stories like yours just break my heart. But what has happened is history.....now it's a battle to save this baby. DANG THIS BREEDER SHE SHOULD BE CURSED FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE.....sorry that is so strong....but I don't think taking this puppy back is the answer. Oh and YES there is a big difference between a 6 week old and a 8 week old. If you want PM your phone number to me privately and I will try to help you further!!! Sorry I don't mince words when it comes down to life and death. D Please everyone do not flame me for speaking out....many of you should use this as a lesson on how NOT to purchase a Yorkie puppy! Here is a message I sent someone else recently.......please ask more questions if you need to. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh my word.....I will try to help. Poor baby I really hope this is not a toy breed. But here goes. Get some canned goats milk.....Walmart has it. mix half with pedialite. Then crush puppy kibble in the blender (dry) until it looks like brown corn meal. Mixed crushed puppy kibble with goat milk to a runny consistency in a cup saucer. Place some on your finger and try to get puppy to lick it. Encourage puppy to lick as much as possible......then slowly try to get puppy to "find" the soupy mixture in the saucer. If the pup is hungrey.....he will dive in! If puppy does not begin to lap the mixture......then put some kayro surup on finger.....let pup lick it......you can also give puppy 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of surup. If puppy has low blood surgar he may not eat......he will get weaker and weaker as the blood sugar drops. If you can keep the blood surgar up.....then puppy should eat willingly. If not then syringe (use syringe without needle) the runny mixture into him. He may need to be fed every 3 hours. Be EXTREMELY careful not to expose this puppy to other dogs or anywhere he can pick up a disease......he probably does not have any shots at this age. At six weeks of age he should have a parvo shot.......NO LEPTO. I only give parvo at 6 weeks of age....as the immune system is easily damage. Also it's important the have a vet check for worms........VERY important. As worms can cause sudden death of young puppies. Oh! keep puppy warm......get a mens tube sock.....put 1 cup of uncooedk rice in....tie knot.....then warm in microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.....shake well to get rid of hot spots. Place next to puppy.....if he's cold he will climb onto the sock.....if he gets too warm....he will move away. Do not handle puppy much......let him sleep if he's comfortable......puppy NEEDS sleep and a full tummy.....that is all for now. Get a small box oh 12 X 12 or such....put in soft bedding along with the warm rice sock. |
I only read your post and no responses so I hope I am not going to be too repetitive. It is truly amazing how much each week makes with a little puppy. They change so quickly from week to week .... with each week being very crucial in their development. 6 weeks is way to early to go. It honestly makes no sense to me that the breeder is more or less saying "Take her now or I am keeping her!". It doesn't matter how nice of a person she is, how nice her house is, or how clean her animals are....6 weeks is just way too early. The little puppy just isn't ready to leave yet. If she is truly a caring breeder she will take care of that pup for atleast 2 more weeks since she should have to begin with. I am just hoping that it isn't causing a behavioral problem that will last a lifetime. If she won't take the pup back, you will have to spend tons of your time with it and become its new Mamma and littermate...not necessarily holding it all the time, but making sure it moves around enough, sleeps enough, and that all of its needs are met. |
puppy I remember a thread where we warned you about this. We rescued Brandy at 5 weeks old. She was very frightened and sad. She cried day and night unless she was being held. She had to stay with my mom for a few weeks before coming to live with me, and she drove my mother nuts. At night she would put her in another room so they could try to sleep. Now she is 13 weeks old and she growls at me ALOT. But I understand why she is that way so I don't get mad at her. It's too late to change her. She was from a byb who didn't care about her dogs. I know you thought this would make her closer to you, but she might end up resenting you. You have to see if from the dog's prespective. She is very young, has had very little human contact and she has been yanked away from everything she has ever known. She is crying for her mother and yorkies are more social than alot of other dogs. There is a special stuffed animal you can buy for her with her mother's heartbeat. She is also stressing your other dog out because he doesn't know what's wrong with her. You said that your male is 4 months old? Be VERY careful with him around her in a couple months. Bailey was already "humping" at only 5 months. The stress she is putting on your family and your other dog is very rough. I agree that since you have had such a longstanding relationship with this lady and you got your other dog from her you shouldn't have a problem asking her for this small favor. If she is a good breeder she should want what's best for this little puppy. DO NOT resell her. Passing her from one family to another would be mentally horrible for such a scared young puppy. Good luck. I know you didn't want to wait longer than 6 wks for the puppy. But it's like cooking, you have to wait until it's ready. |
I wouldn't normally comment, because I am not a breeder. But is it possible that this one needed even more because she was the runt??? After reding another one of your posts I noticed this. Maybe the breeders can help with this, but I thought I read that the moms will push a runt to the side. I am in no way saying this is the issue, but you stated she was the smallest of the litter. Usually the smaller ones have many problems, or so I have read. I understand you wanted to rescue her, but at what cost? I would take her to the vet and get some information on how to nurse her, and get a full check up! Like I have said before I am not an expert, not a breeder, just a big Yorkie lover. You, Maggie and Tucker are in my prayers. |
Amanda..... I just thought of something else! Is the puppy going potty?? She may have a tummy ache because very young puppies CANNOT potty by themselves. Get a cotton ball and warm water.....and gently swap her rear end. This should help her go potty if she is not going. D |
Have you tried the heart beat thing? I had my yorkie at 5.5 wks because her mom got real sick, and I just kept her with me and on the heart beat pillow they had then in her crate and with lots of fuzzy animals, and she was okay in about a week. I'd put Tucker's crate or bed near/but not where he can get to her until she sees him as friend and gets used to all the new smells etc, and just keep her with you as much as possible. It was a week of intensive "me" for mine, then she got to where exploring was a priority, and playing, and then she was okay. Hope this helps. |
Have you tried giving her puppy milk? Also I heard Comfort Zone works for little puppies. You can find it at PetsMart & PetCo. |
Amanda, I would take the pup to the vet asap for a professional appraisal... In the mean time, keep the baby warm, and be sure she is geting nutrition and hydration and is eliminating. I have used Goats milk --- it has helped save many animals on the farm, no dogs so far, but if I were in a pinch, I would try the goat's milk/pedylite first. Be very careful not to overload the baby or cause diahrreah, and then have yet another problem on your hands. As added insurance against hypoglocemia, try nutrical or if you don't have that put a drop or two of corn syrup on your baby's gums Good luck and please keep us posted. |
hello I want to help you and your new puppy.I live in ar and I am traveling to knoxville on tues. to pick up my son from college for thanksgiving. Ihave yoshi my 5 mos old yorky and I hope you will contact me pm and maybe we could think of something to make everything better for everyone. cathy and yoshi |
pup Amanda when we talked by phone I agreed with you to take the pup at 6 weeks. I wasn't in agreement with the breeder, but the pup was in a bad situation IMO...if you didn't the breeder was selling to someone else. At least you know how to care for a new baby. When a breeder sells at 6 weeks there is no reasoning with them...they purely care about money and all the work they have to do with each day they keep them...plus, they get them out early before any health problems pop up...most things show up between 8 and 12 weeks. Returning it to the breed to keep for a few weeks will not make it better unless the breeder spends time with the pup..the littermates are gone and the mother is no doubt back in the kennel. I would tough it out. Get a baby sling and carry her around when you are home. Put her in a small pen with a heating pad (HIDE THE CORD) and a teddy when you are gone. This is no different then bringing home a new human baby...I wondered why we had a baby..I thought my life was over..then in a month it was the best idea we ever had. Call me if you want...we all understand and are here for you. |
Well I am starting to calm down a little bit and it's kind of getting better.. Maddie is definately peeing and pooping cause I am always cleaning it up. My neighbor gave me some stuffed animal with that thing inside that you heat up and it keeps them warm.. I have been putting her in her crate with 2 stuffed animals, her bed and an alarm clock.. Just like I did Tucker...I called the breeder this morning and left a message with her daughter and she never called me back... Point Taken....Anyways, I guess I was thinking that since they kept one of her sisters then atleast she could have one of her littermates a little longer.. I have been giving her Nutrical and today she has actually been playing and eating well.. Actually, she will only eat out of Tuckers bowl so it is funny when he tries to eat also, she will keep scooting in front of him so he can't get any...He just looks at me like "see what you've done". She still cries when she goes in the crate but not as long and she will eventually stop after awhile..I was totally wrong for assuming that she would be easy since Tucker was.. Lesson learned.. As for her age, I am positive that she is 6wks because I picked her out at 3days old and they made it clear that she would be going in the paper at 6wks so every friday for 6wks I went and visited her and held her for a while..I called my vet back, by the way she has a clean bill of health.. I took her right after I got her before I got her home so there were no signs yet.. I called him back and he said that alot of runts have a harder time leaving their littermates and mother and that it may take her longer to adjust.. Believe it or not, it is so common for any breed of puppy to go to a new home at 6wks.. Maybe I should find a vet that specializes in small breeds..Anyways, all is calm for now here and my husband is being super sweet to her and very supportive of us hanging in there...Thank you everyone for your help and concern.. I realize that she was not the best breeder, but someone had to love Maddie.... |
oh, ive just read this whole thread, and im so glad things are getting better. keep us posted on lil maddies progress ;) |

Oh Amanda, I've been waiting all day for an update! I'm so glad YOU have Maddie and YOU are willing to go the extra mile for her. You are correct in that someone had to love her. It's still makes me mad.....cause breeders know they can pull your heart strings.....i.e. "if your not here at 6 weeks I'm gonna sell her". That is just so sad. But probably Maddie is very lucky to have landed in your care!! I'm sure she will settle in quite nicely now that you are getting the hang of it. <G> Each day Maddie will be better. With lots and lots of attention/socializion from you and your family....she should develop quite normally both mentally and physically. Good luck and please post updates on Maddie often. D |
I'm so glad to hear you are all doing better. Each day she is getting older and stronger and your love will pull her through. |
Thanks for the update! I've been following this thread all day. It's a real shame that the breeder let her go at such a young age. I know that larger breeds dogs leave around 6 weeks but these yorkies are so small...same with toy poodles, malts, etc. They really shouldn't leave before 8 weeks of age. Glad that she's doing much better. Keep us updated! |
6 weeks is to to early, she hasn't been properly socialized. I place my pups at 9 -10 weeks. My new families never have a problem. 6 weeks they still need their mommy. :( Since you have her now, it just will take time. The only excuse to return a dog is health reasons. One should understand that just because things are not working out at the time. Does not mean for one to get rid of the animal. She is younger than the other dog you had, so it will take longer to adjust. |
Way to go Amanda! Quote:
Oh Amanda - I am so happy that things are calming down and working out. Good for you (and your hubby) for keeping Maddie where she will get the one on one that she really needs right now! Take care and best of luck, Tracy |
Hi! I Feel So Bad For You! Thank God Tucker Is Fine, But I Think The Breeder Is Irresponsible, she Never Should Have Pressured You, Honey!in My Old Rescue Days, I Remember Taking In A 5 Week Old Pup, I Wrapped A Clock In A Blankie, hels Her Close Alot. Have U Taken Her To The Vet Yet? When I Showed Years Ago & Did A Bit Of Breeding, I Did Not Let The Babies Go Till 112 Week, Occasionallyat 10 Weeks.have U Tried Bottle Feeding? Is She Eating On Her Own?please Keep Us Posted! Good Luck! |

Amanda, I'm so glad things are slowing down. It's very true that no two are alike, isn't it? ;) Poor lil Maddie! I'm so glad you've got her. |
Thanks everyone!! I'm glad that things are getting better also.. I hate for her to be scared and lonely and we are all trying to help her adjust.. She is eating great and peeing and pooping fine..For a puppy that has never touched grass before, she sure like to use the bathroom on it.. She will usually go potty everytime we go outside..She keeps wanting to play with toys but Tucker won't share his. I never thought to buy her her own since he has so many and I am sure that he will take hers from her when she gets them.. Man he is really jealous...not in a mean way though... he started limping and yelping and holding his paw up and he ran to his chair.. I was holding Maddie and I put her down and ran over to him and he was holding his paw up in the air and just crying.. I picked him up to look at it and he laid his head on my chest and stopped crying.. When I felt of his leg he never cried so I set him down and he ran and got his favorite toy...What a faker!! Oh listen and then I'll go..... My husband has never been a dog lover but he is coming around since we got Maddie.. Well last night we were buying some christmas stuff at Walmart and he said that we needed to get Tucker and Maddie each a stocking with goodies in it.. I didn't even think this man knew that people actually got christmas gifts for dogs and so we went and looked at them and he said, nah I don't like those, we'll have to go to Petsmart and get them some good ones...What a softie!! lol!! |
I love happy endings. |
