WARNING... New WAY TO STEAL YOUR YORKIE Hello I was talking to someone in the store who came up to me to see my yorkie. Long story short.. he told me of a "rash" of yorkies that have been stolen(this is in the Miami area) from people WHILE they are walking their dogs. Someone will come up to talk to you (distraction) while the partner will cut the leash and run off with the dog. I can't imagine it, because I am very aware of my guys.. but I don't have any reason he would not tell the truth. I just want everyone aware. Thanks |
Thanks for putting he war if out there. I guess we'll have to start dressing our babies in tees that say, "I'm spayed/neutered" to try to deter such thefts. It's so sad we can't even take the babies out for a walk anymore. |
Wow. That is good information to kmow and I bet he was telling the truth. Some people will stop at nothing to get what they want. |
Wow, that is insane! I would have never thought of someone cutting the leash. Some people are disgusting... I could not imagine this happening :( I always make sure people who are interested in my dogs know they are spayed/neutered. I think it makes them less valuable to people who want to steal them. I will definitely be more aware when walking them now. |
People can be so ruthless:mad: That is a bold move on the thieves part. Making away with someone else's dog from a simple walk is disturbing. People are so money hungry it is awful. I think having your dog microchipped is very important. It is also very important to know your surroundings and to be careful who you talk to. If someone is paying too much attention to your dog, get out of there, fast. |
It sounds a lot like the purse thefts that happen where they just cut the strap and run. It really makes me hate people. Sadly, I don't think the spay/neuter shirts would deter people who just want to flip them on Craigslist. |
Crazy! Maybe we should go to handcuffs and a chain leash? |
Lock and Load... |
my li'l one never leaves my arms or hubbys i never let her walk when we are out she is only 3 pounds so its in my arms |
:eek::eek::eek: What is wrong with people!! No more leash and harness. Only in my arms! |
wow people will stop at nothing to get what they want!!! im glad i never let my babies out of my sight |
 Wow, that is just awful....yet one more scare with our babies. Thank you much for sharing so we can all be much more alert  |
That is unbelievable! I remember reading (maybe on yt) that some people were afraid to walk their yorkies (also pugs) in their neighborhood because apparently someone watched where the dog lived, broke in and stole him. The post (article) said it was safer to put your dog in your car and drive to a park or somewhere else. |
Just plain sick.....I sure hope they can run fast cause if I catch up with them the He's will be she's!!!!!!! |

Ok, at least you made a funny out of a terrible situation! :p |
I am always careful when people start chatting with me, I either pick mine up or pull the leash tight and make them sit or lay between my feet. |
Oh my god. That's just sick. I couldn't imagine someone taking Coco from me. I don't live in a bad neighborhood or anything, I live in the country, but taking her to outdoor malls and that happening I would be devastated. I think I may start to pick her up when someone comes up to me:/ It should never come to that though. |
I use to take my babies to Petsmart with me but now I leave them at home because there are so many crazy people now that I am afraid something like this could happen. I heard a while back to be careful because people will come up to you and ask to hold your dog and then take off with them. Thanks for this info. |
DISGUSTING! Thanks for sharing! |
I know.. I was holding remy and it made me hold her tighter!! The Area he was talking about is Brickel, a urban renewal area that has a lot of condos.... Mostly high end. Very city, down town. Most areas are young professionals ... So I can just see people walking their dogs, talking and being distracted My dd said only in Miami... |
I don't think that would be a common occurence, but if anyone is truly afraid someone is going to cut a leash and take your dog, then I suggest first calling your local law enforcement and ask if there have been any dog thefts lately. Also go back to the old fashion "chain" leash. |
That doesn't surprise me. Some months ago someone here was telling about a small dog that was grabbed right out of the owner's arms & stolen. When you read all these stories, it's sure hard to not worry no matter what precautions you take. It's a sorry a$$ world sometimes. |

Right there with ya! Must be a TX thang. |
We use retractable leash so if someone were to cut the leash, we would know. This is insane, I would have never thought of this! |
Wow, thanks for the info. I just had a new two side tag engraved for Lucy. One side has my name and contact info. The other side said " Lucy is old, deaf, has no teeth, & needs meds. Please contact us." I guess I'm hoping it would make her less attractive if someone found her or to a potential thief. |

OMG. Are there any news articles w/ more details? This is so scary :(. |
I heard the same thing is happening in NYC. A women I was talking to at Central Park (who had two yorkies) told me about it. Went right out and got Teddy a chain leash! |

I have not seen anything in the news or in the paper. I live in the "burbs" and I have three dogs so I don\'t feel in danger, but it still made me think of being too trusting when I am out with just Remy. I have a hard time seeing the "bad" in people. |
That is just terrible! It\'s hard to believe people would do such a thing! |
