Washable pee pad issue Hi all. New to the site. I have to female yorkies. I am using washable pee pads. I wash them usually once a week. Does anyone else use these? I need suggestions about washin them. Im puttin them in the wash machine and then wash the machine with bleach afterwards cuz it does smell like pee. Im paranoid that this is not hygenic for us because we also use the machine. Any suggestions? Im afraid the machine will get ruined also. I want to avoid using the disposable pads |
I run mine through a rinse & spin cycle first, before I ever wash them. Urine shouldn't do any damage to your washing machine. It's just like washing cloth baby nappies/diapers. |
Thxs for the response. When my girlfriend found out that i do this she freaked out and said its gross and my clothes will stink lol. Now i dont know what to do lol |
Be sure to use hot water as cold water tends to coagulate the protein in the urine and it does not wash out as well. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I use washable pads, but I do wash them every day, or every other day with bleach. If there is an odor of urine after the wash from an unusually heavy volume of urine, I just run them through again. That has always worked for me, or else I'll set the machine to do an extra rinse cycle. I've also done a soak and rinse on the peepad load, then a wash with an extra rinse. After the peepad load, I'll do a load of whites with more bleach and an extra rinse. Urine is sterile unless your dog has a UTI, so cross contamination shouldn't be a problem, but the smell of urine after the wash tells me that the pads are not clean. |
Thanks for the info. I guess im Not feeling right about wasting so much water and electricity and think that buying a bulk case of disposable ones. Yikes lol |

When I was belly bands I add vinegar to the rinse cycle. Takes any urine smells right out. Even just soaking them in vinegar and water before washing. |
I add baking soda when I wash my pads. I have never smelled urine on them after they have been laundered...nor in my machine. |
I put them in a bucket of water with a little bleach in it, just like I would for my cloth diapers for my kids. When it's time to wash, wring them out and put them in the washing machine. The water from the bucket goes into the toilet, and then I start over with a fresh bucket of bleach water. |
I wash mine with detergent and baking soda on a regular wash cycle. Occasionally, I will add a second rinse cycle. I dry mine on high heat. I do not use bleach. |
I use washable pads but i wash a load everyday. I use Tide with bleach and occasionally use bleach and hot water. I don't usually wash them with other items. It has never made my washer smell like pee. It is much cheaper than buying the disposable pads. I have 4 Yorkies so this is much cheaper. |
