Washable pee pad issue Hi all. New to the site. I have to female yorkies. I am using washable pee pads. I wash them usually once a week. Does anyone else use these? I need suggestions about washin them. Im puttin them in the wash machine and then wash the machine with bleach afterwards cuz it does smell like pee. Im paranoid that this is not hygenic for us because we also use the machine. Any suggestions? Im afraid the machine will get ruined also. I want to avoid using the disposable pads |
I run mine through a rinse & spin cycle first, before I ever wash them. Urine shouldn't do any damage to your washing machine. It's just like washing cloth baby nappies/diapers. |
Thxs for the response. When my girlfriend found out that i do this she freaked out and said its gross and my clothes will stink lol. Now i dont know what to do lol |
Be sure to use hot water as cold water tends to coagulate the protein in the urine and it does not wash out as well. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I use washable pads, but I do wash them every day, or every other day with bleach. If there is an odor of urine after the wash from an unusually heavy volume of urine, I just run them through again. That has always worked for me, or else I'll set the machine to do an extra rinse cycle. I've also done a soak and rinse on the peepad load, then a wash with an extra rinse. After the peepad load, I'll do a load of whites with more bleach and an extra rinse. Urine is sterile unless your dog has a UTI, so cross contamination shouldn't be a problem, but the smell of urine after the wash tells me that the pads are not clean. |
Thanks for the info. I guess im Not feeling right about wasting so much water and electricity and think that buying a bulk case of disposable ones. Yikes lol |

Soaking then may be a better option than additional washing. To be really green, teach the pups to 'go' outside and use no pads!:D |
Yes thats very true. Didnt think about it like that. Hmmmm |

When I was belly bands I add vinegar to the rinse cycle. Takes any urine smells right out. Even just soaking them in vinegar and water before washing. |
I add baking soda when I wash my pads. I have never smelled urine on them after they have been laundered...nor in my machine. |
I put them in a bucket of water with a little bleach in it, just like I would for my cloth diapers for my kids. When it's time to wash, wring them out and put them in the washing machine. The water from the bucket goes into the toilet, and then I start over with a fresh bucket of bleach water. |
I wash mine with detergent and baking soda on a regular wash cycle. Occasionally, I will add a second rinse cycle. I dry mine on high heat. I do not use bleach. |
I use washable pads but i wash a load everyday. I use Tide with bleach and occasionally use bleach and hot water. I don't usually wash them with other items. It has never made my washer smell like pee. It is much cheaper than buying the disposable pads. I have 4 Yorkies so this is much cheaper. |
I wash pee pads every day its the very first thing i do every morning while my coffee is making..you might be overloading your machine if they smell after being washed.. try a smaller load i love the washables.. mine tear the others to shreds :) |
I also use washable pads and I have 4 babies as well. I have never had a problem of my machine smelling afterwards. I also use hot water and bleach and of course detergent. Then I use high heat in the dryer. I have been useing them for over a year, and I have never had to "rewash" them or run my machine again! |
I use disposable pads only when I have a whelping girl, for pee I use washable and wash them every other day, I do use Baking soda in the wash cycle, I fill the washer with warm water add, bleach, detergent and baking soda from the box, mix it well and then add the diapers one at a time to make sure they soak well, then wash in the heavy cicle as usual, I been doing this for many years and never had a problem with odors or residue in my machine. best of luck with your decission.. |
I would think bleach would cause the pads to wear out faster. I just baking soda, OR vinegar OR peroxide. I have used listerine for cat pee before.. it really works!! I guess it could work on the washable pads also. |

pee pads I have one yorkie that uses the washable pads. When I ordered them from the hospital supply place they seemed way too big, so I took them to my alterations lady and she cut them in half and hemmed them. I am usually home during the day and change them a lot. I kept a few full size in case I am gone all day and he may need a bigger area. I add vinegar to the washing powder and also put vinegar in a downy ball for the rinse. After 6 months the pads look brand new. Cesar tore up the disposable pads, even ripped them out of the special holder for them. After he uses his pad he waits for me to notice and praise him. |
hmmm... I been bleaching mine for a couple of years too, I will try the vinegar on the rise too.. thanks for the heads up..:) |
another alternative is the indoor doggie plastic grass system. I actually use this in my backyard on the patio by the door so it's an all weather spot, I take her to her spot each time to pee and poo, she gets a treat if she goes on the grass, doesn't get a treat if she goes anywhere else. For us this was an easy solution for clean up and it's portable for travel, you rinse the tray and grass stuff out as you go. It holds a lot of pee in the tray below the grass. I also use vinegar to break down the urine odor when she did have accidents on my carpet, as well as for all dog beds, blankets, toys whatever needs to be washed. A friend of mine puts a pee pad in the grass system tray under the grass so she can just toss it in the wash as she has multiple dogs and it was easier than possibly spilling the tray when pulling it out washing it, but I don't do that. |
I wash pee pads in warm water/cold rinse using homemade laundry detergent and white vinegar in both wash in rinse cycle. I don't overload the washer and always do an extra rinse. When possible, I hang them outside to day. |
