Not so happy about where my puppy came from :( 3 Attachment(s) So, I've had my yorkie for 2 weeks now. I've had a few questions while I've had her and tried to contact the breeder and have discovered that she may not be as legitimate as I had hoped. Just to provide some background info, I've wanted a yorkie for years. I have researched the breed and read through the forums extensively. I was going to begin my search for the puppy very soon. My dear boyfriend who knew I wanted a puppy decided to take it upon himself to get me the puppy. Now I'm not being ungrateful in any way. The thing is that he is not as thorough/knowledgeable as I am in the selection process. That's not to say I'm an expert, but I have looked into it for a while and had a good idea of what I wanted. After all, this is a 15 year commitment. So he takes me for a ride and we end up at some ladies house. She has the mommy yorkie there and hands me a puppy. She was already paid for and a refund was not possible at this point. I ask her a bunch of questions like how long has she been breeding and can I see the father and so forth. She had good responses for all my questions. This really was the point of no return so I took my puppy home. I took my puppy, Roxy, to the vet right away. The vet said she looked good. The only thing he noticed was that one k9 on the bottom was slightly going into her gums but he said this may correct itself when her grown up teeth come in. So far my only concern is loose stools but the vet said it's most likely due to switching her food from beniful to nature's variety instinct. She is very active, drinks and eats well and not dehydrated. The breeder was no help on this which was a red flag for me. So when we get home I look over her "papers". She was microchipped and had her puppy shots. She did not have any registration papers. I call the breeder who tells me she has to look for them and to call her back. After 4 days of phone tag I speak with her and she wants me to come pick it up tomorrow. She tells me the puppy is registered with the APR which I have never heard of. I looked it up and it doesn't sound too nice. Basically means anyone can register any puppy they claim to be purebred. So I guess the point of me typing this out is to vent and get some opinions. She is mine and I can't send her back or just get rid of her. I'm just a little disappointed I didn't get to pick her out myself and get the puppy I really wanted. I won't love her any less. It's not her fault. I'm just saying. Can you guys take a look at her pics. I'm at the point where I'm doubting everything so I want you guys to look and tell me if she at least looks pure yorkie. I know it can be hard to tell but you guys have seen so many so maybe you can give me you honest opinion. The last 2 pics were after a grooming disaster. He shaved her body down so I just shaved her head down so it would grow back evenly. Her ears aren't standing yet. I figured I would wait until the end of the month and tape them if they are not up by then. |
Looks like a yorkie to me and so what if she may not be perfectly purebred? I have two bred terribly and they are wonderful dogs. Your little one is precious, congratulations. |
I'm no expert, but she looks Yorkie to me. My dog is 1/2 yorkie 1/2 westie & she's perfect, of course she is also what I wanted (a Fourche terrier.) If you wanted a well bred yorkie, you may be disappointed at first, but I guarantee you will fall in love with your furbaby regardless of her genes, afterall they all have their own unique personalities. = ) |
i almost feel guilty about how i feel.....i'm not dissapointed in her, she's been a good girl. i just would have liked to have been more involved in the selection process. Thanks for responding! |
She looks like a Yorkie to me, and a very cute one. I am sorry you didn't get to pick her out yourself, but sometimes God has other plans for us. She will teach you so much. Since you are not choosing the foundation for a breeding stock or planning to show dogs, I would't be concerned with the 'papers'. One of the healthiest, smartest, and most beautiful Yorkies I ever had, was from a one time, backyard breeder. Enjoy her. |
I would not have shaved her down unless it was hopely matted...and unless you paid a lot for her, I would be content with her as a pet. |

She looks like a yorkie. Once her coat grows back and if you can get the ears to stand up I think she will look more like what you expected. She is very cute. |
Best of luck. Like the others said, wait a while....and enjoy her. I dod agree, one should not buy a dog for another person....but he meant well. She could be your best dog ever! |
Forget the paper work, if she is healthy and happy thats all the counts. Even if you had picked a yorkie you can never be sure if it is everything you dreamed of it to be. To me she looks yorkie and i think she is lovely congrats it was meant to be!!!!!! |
She is beautiful! All yorkie :) |
She looks like a yorkie to me too. I agree with yorkierose, unless you paid alot of money for her, I would be content and love her just the way she is. |

I spent hours choosing my first yorkie, myself. It's definately a different feeling to have a dog presented to you as yours than one you pick out as yours. But, now ZoE is 6 months old & feels like she's mine & is meant to be mine :). |
She's cute~! Your boyfriend was trying to make you happy and that was very sweet of him. Plus, just like everyone else around here you will not be able to stop at just one. :p |
Aw....what a little sweetheart! She is a precious YORKIE! ;) Congrats and enjoy her! |
She looks all cute Yorkie to me!! You're boyfriend meant well, gotta love men! :p But I do understand, a puppy is a big commitment that you want to be apart of. Like buying a house. But she is beautiful. The one thing that stuck out to me most regarding the breeder was the Beneful dog food.. But other then that, who cares if she's purebred! She has an adorable face! |
She is very cute- I have one with floppy ears- I love her as much as the one with his ears up. There is nothing you can do about the past now- just focus on giving her the best future possible. Good Luck. |

it was very sweet and surprising. he tries very hard but he is not the thoughtful type at all. so this was huge on his part. lol..... thanks everyone for being so positive. I knew everyone here would understand where I was coming from. I love her very much already. I can be a control freak when it comes to this type of stuff so the whole thing being done without my involvement kinda took me out of my comfort zone. Oh well. He saved me a butt load of money and I have a new baby in the house. Everything does happen for a reason. I found out I was 12 weeks pregnant only 2 days after Roxy came home. So god does have his own plans. I would love another yorkie. I already have a 5 yr old shih tzu named Oreo. But my bf would not want another puppy in the house. Especially now that we are having our 3rd baby……. |
Your baby is absolutely adorable! Although I do understand your point, for everything there is a reason and one day, she will tell you what that reason is in her own time, and her own way for finding her way to you. Good luck with her. |

Congrats on your new baby, she is adorable!!! |
I understand where you're coming from - control freak myself! My 1st yorkie did not come from the best breeder, but 14 years ago thought I was doing the right thing not buying from a pet shop. I loved her dearly. Her ears took a while to come up. The breeder told me to keep the top third of her ear hair shaved short and massage her ears a several of times a day. It worked, eventually they popped right up. I think your little one is absolutely adorable. |
She is a Cutie!! Congrats on both your babies!! :) |

In her first pic, she looks really good and...all YORKIE. Just keep her ears shaved to get them to stand. When her hair grows back out, she'll be a beautiful little Princess. :) |
I think your baby is precious. |
I think she is so cute; especially with her hair a bit longer. I understand; I'd rather pick out my own puppy too. But she's here and she's adorable! |

cdra..... you have an adorable Yorkie, and a very thoughtful boyfriend who is trying to make you happy.... What's not to love about all that? You are very lucky, and believe me, many people here would envy you. Welcome to Yorkie Talk, and enjoy your sweet pup. |
There are 2 or 3 things in life that are gifts from the heart. A puppy is one of them, what a wonderful, sweet thing your man did for you!! ,be sure to tell him so. I have been with my husband for 35yrs,on my 49th bday he traded in one of his Harley's for a Mustang as my bday gift, this was the car I have always wanted. My car is more high maintance than me and I dont care. My sweet man gave it to me from his heart. Your baby is just beautiful!! |

AND THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE WHO COMMENTED. I REALLY DO THINK SHE WILL HELP LEARN TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CAN'T CONTROL. EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T PICK HER I WOULDN'T TRADE HER FOR ANY OTHER PUPPY IN THE WORLD. |
She is so darn cute and looks pure Yorkie. My husband surprised me with my first Yorkie for Mothers Day 2 years ago but I got to pick her out. So enjoy your BF gift because they don't do things like this often. |
