Does your yorkie entertain her/himself? I have a quick question regarding your yorkie's playing habits. I walk Teddy about 4 miles a day, and when I absolutely cannot do that he goes to daycare for 8 hours where he gets both play time and training sessions with the training staff at the daycare. I'd like to say that Teddy gets a lot of both mental/physical stimulation! However, sometimes I feel bad because he seems to not like playing with his toys by himself? He has an entire dining room area to himself and a window to look out through, bully sticks, beef trachea and toys to play with (just bought him two new toys yesterday) and he gets REALLY excited when I play with him and his new toys but the second I leave he just lays down instead of playing/chewing on his toys by himself? He doesn't whine/cry or bark when he's by himself but I sort of wish he would enjoy playing with his toys when I'm not around? I feel sort of guilty ? Is this how all dogs are with their toys? |
Scarlett can entertain herself with a piece of paper. Rhett needs a little more interaction to be interested. Here is Scarlett playing catch all by herself. |
I wish Kaji would play and entertain himself. If I or my brothers are nit playing with him, he just sits there. If Im not close by, he won't chew his bullies. |
Scarlett is TOO cute! Jackson will very rarely entertain himself with toys. He will lay down and chew on a bully stick or a Kong, etc, by himself. When it comes to toys, I generally have to be playing WITH him. Although occasionally he will go find a kong tennis squeaker and roll it around and chase it, but it lasts all of 60 seconds. The only times I've seen him actually play by himself is with things he's not supposed to have. He LOVES the lids/caps to water bottles, etc, and he flings them up in the air and plays catch with them, LOL, but of course I have to take those away. |
ZoE prefers that I play with her with her toys. But, she will entertain herself for hours playing too. She has a lil squeaky fish that she loves. She'll chew on it & flip it around & chase after it & chew & flip it again. Her other favorites are a rubber ball with bell inside, a squirrel skinneez, and a stuffed rope toy she came with from the breeder. After a little furniture arranging she now has three windows she can look out of; towards the driveway, front of house & back of house. She likes to watch cars go buy in the front & watch birds & squirrels in the back. |
Scarlett is so cute. Teddy would sit and chew on the piece of paper and swallow it. Quote:

If I thought one dog would entertain himself I for sure thought it would be Jackson! You do so much training with him that he probably needs a break to chew on his bullystick anyways ;);) And, I have noticed that if it's something inappropriate he has no problem "playing" with it for a while! Nope, Zhoie thinks playing means mommy too ;) She will play with her Weasel Ball by herself, only because you turn it on and it rolls around by itself flipping it's tail. She drags it everywhere and chews it....we really burn up alot of AA batteries here, :D |
Callie chews on bones and plays with her treat stick (a stick that has treats come out of it when u roll it around) and she has stuffed balls that she will roll around and pounce on and play with but other things she normally doesn't play 100% by herself with. Sometimes she will grab a toy and throw it around and pounce on it but most of the time that is when she is trying to get someones attention or if every ones attention is on her. My mom yorkie Sammy LOVES toys and will play with them by himself he also will put a smaller on in his mouth and walk around squeaking it forever lol |
Both these toys sound great...would you guys mind letting me know the names of them/or links to buy them so I can get them for Teddy? Also, for the treatstick what treats do you use? Quote:

We just got a little robotic bug today at Walmart called a hex bug. Its in the kids toys section. Someone told us about it. My baby played with it for half hour and I had to take it away from her. It moves around on its own and vibrates. It was $8.00 and to her totally worth it. She tries to smack it and bite it but I'm pretty sure she wont swallow it cuz she drops it from her mouth when it vibrates. I'll post a video later if u guys would like to see the toy and how it works |

Kacee does not entertain herself. She will play like Scarlett on the patio sometimes, but not very often. I'm her entertainer.:D |
Scarlett you look like you are having so much fun!! Rosie don't play much by herself. Mainly me or the boys have to play with her. Unless there is a fly in the house. Then she will spend hours chasing it! :D |
Miss Scarlett is way too cute! She had me cracking up, I think it's the cutest thing ever when they do play on their own. Princess will do the toss thing with this little scrunchie sometimes, she reminds me of a cat & I lol the whole time. Other than that she'll chew her chews alone & sometimes "kill" one of her stuffed toys. When has something naughty, usually tissue or paper, she will chew it in front of me every time. Guess she knows I'm going to pay attention to that pronto, lol. |
Mmost od the time Suzi will not entertain herself either, but sometimes she will. When she has a bully stick she will chew on it for hours, or find a hiding spot. She loves a stuffed bear that she will play with . i have a shih tzu that Suzi is best friends with, they sometimes play together, but it is always the shih tzu who starts it. Most of the time the dogs are never too far away from us. |

Samantha can entertain herself for hours! She loves to toss her toys around, especially a big orange ball and a squeaky bear. She loves to chew on a knuckle bone and will do that for a long time. I play with her and she is learning to play with my little Chihuahua, but she has always been an only dog and she can entertain herself just fine. Jeanette |
Troy entertains himself with a small loofa dog or playing catch with his kibble. Troy is an only "furkid" but he has a skinkid who often keeps him busy. When neither human around he'll sleep or do one of the two things mentioned above. |
everytime I tried to play with Mel using one of her toys (and she had loads) she wanted to play only with my hand instead.. She used to play with her toys only and she had a friend around otherwise she wouldn't even look at them.. |
Mine is still a pup but he hardly ever wants to just play with his toys, he wants us to throw them, or play on the ground with him. He loves walks and I play with him tons but when I do house work he is the same, just kind of hangs out. |
Teddy will self-entertain, pouncing on toys and zooming, but Maximo requires human involvement. He is a stinker and discourages Teddy from playing so that I will feel sorry for them and join them. |
Mooch will play with her toys herself although she likes to me to play with her and her toys. She will entertain herself with her kibble or a treat by flinging it in the air and rolling on her back and playing with it. lol. I love to watch her play with her kibble! She loves paper too, she will get some tissue and play with it in her mouth, throw it and play with it in her mouth some more. I have yet to see her swallow the tissue though. Now when she is naughty, she gets her tinkle pad and shreds it!!! :animal36 |
I work from home and can't always be playing when Thor wants to play. He will pick a toy and run all over the house with it chewing it and tossing it. Sometimes he lays on his back and holds it with his paws and chews on it some more. He can do that for about an hour -- but does it almost everyday. Then he naps, it's great entertainment! Nydia-- Thor's mommy :aimeeyork |
Marty entertains himself. His favorite toy is actually a little blue ball and he likes to move it around and then growl and pounce on it. Oh, and he also loves this little cow toy that is actually made for a baby!! It rattles and has two teething rings and also has an area that makes the crinkle sound. |
Gizmo entertains himself by finding the squeeker in his skunk and squeeking it as fast as he can. I thought at first it was my husband doing it, but it's actually Giz. I think he thinks that he's "killing his prey." |
I have a new puppy and he entertains himself which is great! I also work from home part-time so he has to play by himself quite a bit. He has several toys but his favorite is a stuffed animal that is a wee bit larger then him and a Tug-a-jug which I recently brought that has a tug rope on one end and a sealed jar on the other that treats are stored. As he tosses it around from time to time it drops treats. Best thing I could have purchased!! (one thing to know, don't try to talk on the phone, geez it can be very loud when it slams against bare floors) LOL! |
Mine will be happy for ages just rolling around on the floor with a mini tennis ball. He holds it in his mouth and paws at it. I don't understand why that's so fun but he loves it! He will also fling toys up in the air and go after them. His favorite thing is to grab a toy, go up to another dog or person and tease them with it, to make them chase him for the toy! |
Mine can both entertain themselves, even when they are alone (without the other dog)- They have two huge toy bins- they love to get into the toy bin and dig for their favorites- they love to drag each and every toy out of the bin and see how much of the floor they can cover with their toys. Chloe can turn something as mundane as a pillow into her own personal jungle gym. The most important thing is to have lots of different kinds of toys- different textures, different sounds, different sizes- I think it helps to keep things fun. |
Yorkie Plays With A Rubber Duckie We adopted a Yorkie from a rescue in Nov. 2010. She plays with with a duckie and often sleeps with it. She will also suck on rawhide. However, every dog is different. My last dog of 12 years never played with anything. Don't feel guilty. Just enjoy. :) |
