Tips To Keep The Indoor Yorkies Cool? We're breaking records here, I think we're supposed to hit 96 tomorrow & it's unbearable! :sun: I live in a 3rd story apt. with brand new central air & we're still baking! It's been on non-stop since about 4a.m. & it's still almost 85 in here. :pot-icon: It doesn't help that we get 5-6 hours of beaming sunlight every evening, even with all windows/curtains closed it heats up. Princess is so hot, often panting. She's drinking a ton of water & I've even given her a 2qt. container of water to "dig up", which she has. I gave her a cool, quick rinse in the sink but she was hot soon after. Is there anything I can do for her? I've almost thought of wetting one of her t-shirts & putting that on her? I do ice her water.:scratchhe Thanks! |
First of all, keep your apartment dark and don't fan the doors. You will be amazed at how much heat lights, computers, etc. generate. What about fans? Do you have any? We have the good old fashion box fans at my house. I have to have the noise to sleep at night. But they put out quite a bit of cool air too. I am not sure about using the wet tshirt or the ice. I guess it wouldn't hurt! Good luck! I hate being hot so I feel for you. |

I have used wet t-shirts to cool the dogs down outside, so it might work inside as well. |
My girlfriend bought this for her dog and it was too small so she gave it to me for Toby. I finally tried it the other day. I don't know if it helped but it sure didn't hurt any. It had to cool him down a little bit. You might want to check into these. |

Just a thought, but I remember seeing the below cooling mat on PPEPETS.com. It is 55% off right now, making it $13.50. If you use the code "PPESUMMER", you get another 20% off your order, making it $11.00 plus tax and shipping (shipping is high, though.....I think like $8.99). Not sure if it works, but it is cheap enough that you might want to give it a try. There may be other mats out there somewhere that might be better. Here is the link if you are interested. I hear ya, I'm in MI too and our air conditioner broke last week. Thank goodness the guy is coming here tomorrow and installing a new one bright and early. But I've been feeding Gizmo ice chips and taking him out to pet friendly stores and malls. We also went to Grandma's often and have been sleeping in the basement (granted you're in an apartment and don't have basement access). Floor fans get alot of air moving as well as lines curtains can insolate your apartment. Good luck, the heat sucks. |
Freeze some water bottles and put them on a towel for her to lay close too. A swim in the tub,a stroll in the mall,a drive in the airconditioned car. You might make sure that your unit has been serviced and cleaned so it can work properly. Here in TX we have topped 100 several times. I am very thankful that my air unit works very well and we can swim in a pool. Hope you find some relief. |
Man I feel sorry for you two. Being hot is not fun. And heat rises so I bet you are getting the heat from the other two floors as well. :thumbdown The hot makes me a little grouchy! When our air went out I called my husband every 5 minutes until he gave in and called a repair man. I will send prayers your way to make it through the hot summer! |
Is the AC temp preset or can you adjust it? If you can't adjust it, take a damp towel and warm it in the microwave. Then hold it under the thermostate on your wall. The heat from the towel will make the AC come on colder. Get thermal curtains and put up at the windows... should help to keep the heat out. Ice in Princess's water bowl is good too. |

I'd crank the air first thing in the morning & get it as cool as you can in your apartment and then close everything up and keep it dark. I'd even tack up sheets over the windows if you just have blinds like many apartments do. Then, get the fans going & keep the air moving. I made ZoE a slushie out of gatorade & ice cubes in the blender & took it with us this weekend to a friends outdoor graduation party. I spooned it out in a little dish for her throughout the day, in addition to her water. She really enjoyed it. |
You guys have such great ideas! I'm going to try them all, lol. I had maintenance come last year as it was our first summer & it was so hot up here. They can check the amount of ??? and pressure of ??? & they said it was all great as the unit is brand new. It's just the rising heat & the afternoon/evening sun that's killing us. I left one slat of the venetian blinds open so Princess could lay in the sun but she only wanted to for a sec. She wanted on the balcony where I have something she can get in to get wet, it was so funny. She walked out about two steps then plopped down! At least she didn't want to go back & I didn't feel evil for not letting her. I'm going to try the rag w/the thermostat, look at the mat & bandana, make her some kind of frozen treat, I could even go buy a bag of ice & put it in something on the floor in front of the fan. I'm desperate, I'll try anything! lol. As far as taking her in public buildings she's petrified, she does great at parks, etc. but I think she associates stores with groomers & vets.:( |
You need to get someone out there to check the filters! That is the most common and easiest fix. If the filters are clogged you will not get any cold air. We used to live in the "desert" and in the summer would be a dry 100 or so degrees, upstairs would be at 80+ with the ac running 24/7 if we didn't have brand new clean filters. It will also save on the electricity bill. |
It is crazy hot here now! We are second floor and our air works just fine. I'm actually cold right now. lol. I"d drag them over to check it again. Fan air is of little value to me. Doesn't do a thing for the humidity. Gotta be a/c. Would you be able to run one of those little a/c units too? Dunno a lot about them. |
It's hot in east Tennessee, too, 11 days of above 90 degrees in a row, so far. Wheeeewwwww! My air conditioner runs a lot, but we're managing. I have box fans and they move the air around and help. I run a box fan at night for the "white" noise and air circulation. It's supposed to "cool down" to 89 over the weekend. Jeanette |
It is just ridiculous everywhere! And it's only early JUNE!!! I can call & ask about the filter. I'll do that as soon as they open at 8. Even for being on the 3rd floor it's insane how the air is of no relief. It's been on all night, supposedly dropped into the 70's last night & it's just about 75-77 in here now. If I want a chance I need to start out at 70 or lower, but I can't get there! As for an A/C unit I can't...I don't have any regular windows. One tiny, tall skinny one & two huge ones. We tried to go to the pool yesterday but there had to be like 6,000 people there,;) plus Princess is not allowed. |

In addition to the heat, what is your electric bill going to look like!? |
Wow!!! I feel for you! Our AC is kickin' -- I actually get cold in our house, lol. Jackson also is not good with the heat. He gets really hot quickly and doesn't do as much outside unless there's a pool or some kind of body of water around. We had some CRAZY insane hot days around Memorial Day Weekend. For like 6 days straight it was 95 or up, but it felt like 100 every day with the heat index. Ugh! Thank God it went down a little bit this past week making it a bit more bearable. I was just outside though and it seems pretty darn hot today. |
We have central AC that works good but it doesn't cool the kitchen/sunroom much because it is at the opposite end of the house. My dogs are confined to this area, this is where we stay the most, so my husband bought a separate window AC so the dogs would stay cool. He even bought separate electric heaters for the winter so they wouldn't be too cold. He mounted them so they wouldn't be any danger to the dogs. This is the same husband that told me I couldn't have a dog in the house. This has actually cut down on our bills because we don't use the main AC or Heat as much. |
Have you tried putting a window air conditioner in your bedroom. We have one in ours and we keep the door shut and it stays cool in their. Our central air has quit working and weve been roasting so we head up their. Also qvc had a air conditioner the other day that was a stand up one that doesnt go in the window only the vent hose does that may wiork for you. |

What I just thought of is I wonder is there's something like you put in a car windshield to deflect the sun? It wouldn't be the prettiest:rolleyes:, but this is no fashion show at this point, lol. |
Cooling pads work and are an inexpensive way to help cool a hot furkid. They use evaporative cooling and can be used indoors, outdoors, in car seats, etc. If you would like more information, please send me a pm and I can help you out with one. |

As someone mentioned filters do get clogged very easily and do interfere with the air conditioners ability to cool. Of course if it does not have enough BTU's for the size you are trying to cool you are just wasting electricity. If it is central air I would speak to the building manager. With the cost of running an air conditioner you should be getting your money's worth. Closing off the area around the air conditioner is an option so that it is only cooling one small area rather than not being able to cool a large area. That cooling mat sounds like a good idea if the dog will lie on it. |
Cooling pads are great if your dog will use them. I don't care for the ones you have to soak to use, but the ones that look like a mini old skool waterbed mattress and you fill with water, work really well! My last yorkie, Chelsea, just didn't like it, but my friend's dog did, so I'd haul it out & fill it when he came to visit. For Chelsea, I had a large, cutting board size, piece of polished marble that was supposed to be used for baking....rolling out pastry, etc. I'd set it on the floor by the ac vent and Chelsea would run right to it when she came in from outside in the summer. |
I bought this for Teegy as I don't have air conditioning, he loves lying on it as it keeps his body cool, at night I move it to my bedroom for him to sleep comfortably there too. The soothsoft chillow for dogs |
Wow...I'm surprised its that hot up there in June....I have TONS of family in Hastings & Kalamazoo area and Indiana...We are up there just about every year for the 4 of July, family reunion..We will be up there in 3 weeks. DH and I spend just about all our time outside cause its so nice and no humidity and I always bring a jacket with me cause its so cool at night....I hope it cools off some before we get there. Here in Florida its in the high 80's right now but that is about to change soon...In July August and Sept...you can't be outside unless you have a pool or at one of the springs...it will be 100 out and with the humidity, you can't even breath. I always put ice cubes in my babies water to help cool them off when they come in. |
Well, it is 97 here today!!!!!! In Maryland. Yikes!!! |

It's 94 now, just north of here I believe, due to the heat part of the road on highway I69 broke down! I think that's pretty crazy! I'm going to be looking into the hot/cold pad...that could be awesome to have in the house for me, lol. I've been spraying Princess with a spray bottle & she's been laying on a wet wash cloth. We're supposed to get a break in the heat tomorrow...I hope we all do! |
