How often do you go the vet? I was reading a post on another forum and someone took their dog to the vet for the first time in 5 years apparently and was mad that they had to pay $250. My dogs at a minimum go for annual appointments where they have bloodwork, fecal test, check up, etc. Although it seems like I never make it more then a couple of months before someone has something come up that they need to see a vet- but aside from that they would always go every year no matter what. If I got away with $250.00 in vet bills over the span of 5 years- I would be throwing a party (you would all be invited!) not complaining. So- now I am curious- How often do you go to the vet. |
Every six months and as needed. I get out heartworm preventative for 6 months at a time and then on our last pill set up a well checkup. Our new vet doesnt charge for the actual visit if you buy the meds there and they are the same price as online. Otherwise, its a small fee of 20 bucks or so plus testing. Shes great and i can walk to her office (that close) :) |
Forgot to mention, we drop by for nail clipping as needed and its only 5 bucks. Im not brave enough to do our own nails lol |
With Rosie and three outside dogs and one cat I seem like I am there all the time! :D Once a year for sure. But seems like one of them always end up needing something else. $250 in five years would be a party throwing event for sure! My last vet visit on Rosie was $400. And that was only one visit! |
I take Jada and Bogie for their annual checkup and then split up their vaccines so that is another 2 visits. I drop in for Jada's nail trim and also drop in about every 6 weeks or so and weigh them both. My vet has a small office at his home which is 2 minutes from my house where he does the annual exams and smaller stuff..he has a large office about 30 minutes away where we go if we have to have ultra-sounds, x-rays etc. There are two vets who work for him and they rotate between the two offices. We are in there all the time for something. Of course my DIL and my SIL are both techs so we sometimes just go to visit and they both get us gift certificates for Christmas that we can use for office visits, meds etc. I have had Jada and Bogie 2 years and we have been at least 7 or 8 times for misc stuff and countless times for just visiting. I have tried to do this from the beginning so Jada and Bogie don't associate going there for something bad, and they are both very relaxed going and never get stressed. Our vet also lets us use his salt water pool in the summer:) |

Smart idea on keeping them stress free. When we walk into the vet office Rosie freaks out! Wish I would of thought of ways to prevent it. Another good idea on getting gift certificates. Never thought of that! :) |
Vet Sprocket goes to the doctor once a year or as needed, just like I do. He has health insurance, just like I do, $250, for a whole year? Not bad, course I only have one dog to go and any other visits are really cheap, EXCEPT of course weekends nobody can go to the doctor on the weekends cheap, human or vet!!:p |
I take mine every 6 months for a Full Wellnes Exam that includes Blood Work Up. Also if any thing crops up they are at the Vet in a flash. |
With Princess still being relatively young she's been a lot to spread out vaccines/boosters, parasite screens, spay....but I think once she's UTD on her shots in about a week we'd go at least once a year for a well check & parasite screen, but probably twice a year for well visits & hopefully nothing in between.:) |
Now I understand why our vet's staff cringe when they have to present the bill. They first give a detailed description of the services rendered. A lot of people must complain when it comes to the bill. How often do we go? About once a week. :):p:( For Max and his eye. We also split up vaccinations, so we have been there often. |
We have 5 dogs so we are at the Vet at least once a mo. for something. Routine visits are once a year that includes labs etc. Our vet likes us to do poop screening every 4 mo.s because our dogs go to a lot of public places. |
We go once a year for a full check up and shots, heartworm test etc. Other than that if someone is sick we go immediately. Lately between having fosters and Pixie being hit by a car, seems like I live at the vet. they were teasing me that if I came in anymore they would have to start charging me rent. I said no soon i will just have to start working for you so I can afford all of this LOL. I also asked her what college i sent her child to LMAO |
I mean, he's only 2 1/2 years old so technically he's been kind of a lot. But as he gets older, I may not do yearly unless something requires us to go. Then again, I don't go to the doctors yearly either, so I dunno. He obviously went 4x as a pup (12 week, 16 week, rabies). Then at one year for boosters. He went once when he came up limping, of course I took him in. He went twice for kennel cough (well, actually, he didn't even go in-they told me to just pick up antibiotics as to not spread it). Umm... I don't know, probably 2 or 3 other times besides those. So he's kind of been a lot in a span of 2 1/2 years. I guess the only reason he'd go in yearly is to get his bordatella vaccine. Rabies will be every 3yrs. Everytime I get charged for a "check up" I feel it's kind of a rip off. They feel around his body for all of 60 seconds and say "okay, he's great!" and tack on $55 for it but it does give me peace of mind, I like them to check his patellas and stuff. |
We go for the annual exam and in between as needed for what ever pops up. I also go in to get their nails trimmed between grooming sessions (which is also done at my vet's office!) All told, I'm probably there once a month for one reason or another. |
The minimum we would ever go is twice a year, because I do keep him current on his kennel cough vaccine. We go once year for an annual exam, twice a year for kennel cough, and everything else is on an as-needed basis. Sometime we go for months without a visit; sometimes we go more often. In the past month, we've been three times! I can't imagine not going in for a yearly checkup...especially for five years straight! |
We are set up on semi-annual exams....Sophie is only 1, but will be going back again in a few months. |
We go at least once per year for a full check up, heartworm and fecal test. In addition, we go anytime something else requires going. On average, about once every 3-6 months. |
For sure we go annually but I bet we're there at least 2-3x per dog for one thing or another. We do the splitting up of shots but regardless, there has been other issues that we've had to go for. Maggie was just in about a month/2 months ago as she threw up like 3 days in a row. She is such a good eater that she eats more than she realizes and she then drinks water after and it rehydrates in her system and she's eaten way too much. I feed them Stella and Chewy's freeze dried. |
Mine go once a year for heart worm and check up, since we are on the every 3 years for rabies and distemper. Nikki goes every 6 months due to him being a senior. But I usually end up at the er vet or regular vet at least 3-4 for non routine visits. With 4 it seems like I never go more than a month with out a trip to the vet. |
Sadly for the pups, every 3 to 5 years (only if something is wrong) isn't at all uncommon. And a ton of owners only feel like they have to go yearly for "shots". So suggesting they be done less often, while great on the over vaccination side of things, can be absolutely horrible for overall health. They just don't bring them at all for those two years in between or whatever. We do exam, bloods, fecal, heartworm, and u/a once yearly. Would probably do a 6 month exam, but hse always needs to be seen during the year, so it isn't needed. One year she was seen probably 15+ times. Now it's maybe 4-7. But then she comes to hang out when I'm there, so she is looked at anytime I have a concern. And if we're not there and a pic can capture what is going on, there is always email and texting. I've become much more relaxed though, so she is not seen for every little thing. |
Every time they sneeze. lol!!!! No, really I take them every time something doesn't seem right and then of course for the yearly exams and everything in between. So, everyone knows us, thats for sure. |
We go at least once every year for their vaccinations and checkup. They are almost two, but when they were puppies...it seemed like we ALWAYS went to the vet for this and that... |
I was in the Vets office 3-times in the past month for Riley's allergic reaction & ear infection issue. The first two times they charged $70.00 just for the Examination Fee....[Ouch....] The 3rd time, was a "re-check", which was $47.50. I have Trupanion pet insurance with a 90% reimbursement for any illness/injury and - 0 - deductible. BUT, they don't reimburse for the examination or re-check fees. I will Plan on taking him once a year for his yearly exam/vaccinations and then for whatever else comes up. I also take him in for his nail trims... which are $15.00 a pop. |
I breed and show on a very limited basis but there was a point this winter that I was at the vet once a week for 7 weeks in a row. Not with the same dogs either. Puppies for shots, Libby was sick, Mickey for some test, Libby to get spayed..... I think I might need to get a part time job there! I have spent a small fortune in vet fees this year alone and I try to use minimal vaccines - not because of costs but it's just my belief. And I titer my crew which is actually more expensive than getting the vaccine's. Anyways, not complaining. My vet is wonderful and my babies are worth every penny of the care and really, I have to say they are pretty healthy for the most part! |
We go at least twice a year. They are all come due for their annual exam in the Fall. I like to break up the vaccines for Pebbles and Bogey so they both make more than one visit for that. Doodlebug is only gets rabies (now every 3 years) so he gets an exam in the Fall. Then in the Spring they go back for their HW blood draw and weight check. Of course it never fails that we make a sick visit for at least one some time along the way. Like when Pebbles lost a tooth, Doodlebug had an LP issue, both had a booboo on his eye, Pebbles caught a bunny , Doodlebug had a "lipstick" problem.....get the picture  They know me by my VOICE when I call  |
We do at a minimum twice a year but honestly we go more often. Sophie Kate boards at her Vet when I am gone so that counts and she also has mild LP and CT so if something is wrong there we go. Avery my cat who will be 13 this week (Happy Birthday Avery) goes only once a year now because it so stressful for him. But he still goes every year regardless of his protest. As someone else said I would have a parade if my vets costs were only $250.00 every FIVE years. |
Every six months for check ups, whenever they need shots, or whenever they are sick beyond anything I can fix at home. Chip spent a ton of time at the vet his first year. The only thing I've really had to bring Smokey in for other than the normal stuff was his separation/storm anxiety. |
OMG! That is awful! Taycie turned 1 in March and aside from the 3 initial visits in the beginning for puppy shots (I do split them up so she just for shots we actually went 4 times), because I did rabies separately from every thing else. She then went back later for her spay surgery about 4 months later. Then through out the year I took her back 5 more times for a UTI, a hookworm, (parasite), Conjunctivis twice and update her bordetella vaccine. And guess what? We go in on the 16th of this month for her yearly exam! I will be doing a fecal and bloodwork and her 1 year boosters. Then in a few weeks will go back for Rabies. So.... I don't know why or what she is complaining about. I don't avoid the vet. I think it is part of being a responsible pet owner. |

Each of my 3 probably go to the vet about 5-8x a year, easily. They love spending our money. Of course, part of this is bc I'm a worry wart - so I may go in more frequently than I need to. |
