I have never purchased an animal from a Pet Store or commercial Breeder. A long while back, a friend of mine had a Yorkie, and he had found what may be called a "casual" or "hobby" Breeder. Still, all the papers and Ancestry were in place, and I have since ran a DNA test on mine, which confirms that. I guess I'm sorta bragging a little, but, the Breeder I use has never had a medical problem with any of the Pups from that Sire and Dame. I once ask him if it could give someone his name, and he replied with a profound NO ! Ha ha ha ! He only lets his "pair" breed about once a year, and requires one to put their name on a list UP FRONT, where the pups will have a Forever home before they are even born. I had to wait almost FOUR MONTHS, for my Female Becca. Beer Belly... On your choice of termonology... would you consider... That a "Paper Trail" outlines "Ancestry", and a DNA Test would prove "Bloodline". These two of course should complement each other, with a Pure Bred. |
I'm so sorry you are hurting. Yorkies can live a long, healthy & happy life. Two years ago I lost my Yorkie Gretchen who was 3 months away from being 18 years old. She was always very healthy, no problems at all. Even in her old old age she was still happy & loving. |
I will keep Gio in my prayers. My Cali from a BYB has a very mild case of MVD diagnosed at 8 months by a liver biopsy. Her ultrasound showed no external shunt either. She is 6 now and doing well. She needs no treatment other than I keep her on a low protein diet. I do blood work on her yearly and it has been all good. So there is plenty of hope that Gio will live a long life. My other 2 are from a good show breeder (retired now) and my male is a rescue found on the streets and he is estimated to be 17 years old. We have no history on him but I don't think he is from great breeding and still he has had a long life. All you can do is find a great breeder and enjoy each day with them and hope for the best. |
Thank you for all of your responses! This helps a great deal :) |
One need only check out the Sick and Injured forum to see that there are a LOT of yorkies out there with health issues. There just are. I don't know if it is due to their small size; overbreeding, or what. Like you and Patti, my Lucy also has liver issues, along with LP. Like Patti, I got Lucy from a very kind BYB, who breeds the sweetest tempered, cutest, yorkies, but probably does not do any genetic testing. Lucy does not have a shunt but rather mild MVD. We are able to keep her healthy and happy (so far and fingers crossed) with a low protein diet. It did take some time, testing, and $$ for said testing to get to this point. I hope that your little one lives a long and healthy life because it sounds like you are taking very good care. |
Ringo1 thank youI hope we get to the bottom of his issues his surgery is June 9th I am so nervous. Also, What is LP? |
Same to your babies! |
I always thought I was lucky to have such a healthy little dog with no signs of any issues. She was the picture of health, until she slipped a disc and became paralyzed from probably genetic invertebral disc disease (IVDD). Vet bills were enormous and her breeder didn't offer any support, except to offer me a 7 year old retired breeding female to "compensate" for my "loss" If I buy another yorkie from a breeder, I will be sure to do WAY more research than I did this time. I want to see bloodlines and testing. They can't predict IVDD but there are many other genetic conditions that can be tested for. I am so sorry for your sick little guy. I know a lot of people here have been through the same things so you've come to the right place for support! |

There are many tests prior to breeding that can rule out if your breeding pair has this disease, and these tests should be done. How-ever it doesn't guarantee a recessive gene(s) for a particular disease is present or not. The best the best breeders can do is a) insure their breeding pair does not have condition a/b/c/ and b) throughly check the horizontal and vertical pedigree for any health concerns. |
