Help! Red legged yorkie My 4 month old Jada is a red legged yorkie. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can feed her for her coat. And what kind of shampoo can I use on her to make her hair more soft even though I know it will never be as soft. Let me know. Thanks! |
I really like Minksheen shampoo and pantene conditioner, it makes my cotton coat yorkies feel more silky. You could add a suppliment with amega acids but what you are dealing with is genetics and I dont think you can change that |

But there are a whole lot of threads on the grooming forum, about different shampoos and conditioners. Lots of fun reading there, if you are a productholic:D I like to recommend Biogroom Silk conditioner, because it is usually easily available and if you go to their site, you can get free samples. Biogroom oatmeal shampoo is good too. For your puppy I love Plush Puppy shampoo (but not the conditioner). It is pricey, and you will probably need to order on line. Get the Biogroom silk conditioner instead. From the Iv St Bernard ISB, I really like the minkoil, this is a product that you can add to your conditioner. I leave it on for at least 5minutes for deep conditioning. Their shampoos and conditioners are good for maintenance bathing as well. Finally make sure your pup has access to water all the time, good quality puppy food. You could look at some additives; such as omega 3/6/9, or salmon fish oil, Isle of Dog royal jelly. Good luck and happy reading |
Hey there!!!! I have a Jada too!!!! You have gotten some good advice about products, would love to see pics of Jada:) |
I am confused, only because I am not real smart. Your Yorkie has a red leg and you want the color to change by diet? |
I would try the PEK by IV St Bernard. It does make all the coats I have tried it on softer although I admit I do not have a red leg so never tried it on that coarse of a coat. |

If you have a red legged yorkie, mostly likely you will always have a red legged yorkie. Mind you Jada is only 4 months so the colouring could change over the next year! As far as shampoos and conditioners... the products you've been given are all great! [when you say red legs... is it literally like a deep rusty red like most red yorkies, or is it more of a rich orangetan? just wondering... Tikka has a deep orange tan which I thought was red, but indeed at 8 months is growing at the roots to the correct color :D] |

Thanks for all the help and information! Well I don't really know if she is a red legged. But her coat is very thin and wiry. It's not soft or floofy. And she doesn't have alot of hair on her legs at all. Plus the color is kinda orange reddish you can say. |

maybe blueberry jello would turn it purple :D |

You don't want it to feel soft or be floofy. |

Mary, in your opinion, when (what age) do those dogs (those with less leg hair/thin sparse coat) generally get their full coat? Don't their coats generally come in later than the "average" Yorkie (so I've heard)? And don't (as a rule) their saddle area stays darker (again so I've heard)? Looking for your experience and opinion. I'm asking because one of our pups (now 8 + months old) has the thinner hair on the legs, thin sparse coat (though now it's beginning to grow and feel a bit thicker), her gold has greater depth to it as does her saddle area. I've read as much as I could find on 'red-legged Yorkies' and I'm still not sure that's what she is. A throw back of some sort (definitely different looking than her siblings), very elegant looking IMO. Talking with her mother's breeder she apparently looks like her great grandfather?? Thank you. |

I think she was being told diet can change the texture/feel of any coarseness of the hair. |
2 Attachment(s) I always thought my Moka fit the description of red leg. I actually really love her hair. She is 4 years and her coat is still changing as far as texture goes, but she looks like she is always trimmed up, only she has never had a hair cut. Her hair NEVER mats, and is super easy to care for. Her head hair grows long. Her underneath is thin, but super super super silky. Her saddle is solid black, courser, brittle, but thick and does not grow more than 3-5 inches. I got a couple of good recent pictures. |
i have a 3 months olds yorkie pls help me is she a red legged yorkie |

Yes Michelle they are rude and have proven to be a different kind of ignorant to my lack of knowledge kind. For those of you familiar with me, the hawk comment was in jest, as for the other we will just ignore you. Lynzy in the several years of being on YT I've never heard or seen reference to red legged Yorkies. I know there are yorkies like my little Tufty his mother and siblings who have red on their faces and a touch in their legs. But I do not believe its a "type" of yorkie. |
Definition of a "red legged yorkie": "A redleg is kind of a throw back so to speak. A yorkie that looks like one of the original ancesters, at least that's where we think the color and coat texture comes from. They are usually a bit longer of body, on the larger side, their hair is a bit harder and usually somewhat dry and brittle. They possess alot of strength and a strong depth of pigment." |
I think that perfectly describes my friends two yorkies, yorkie mom. Unlike others I've seen they don't grow a lot of hair on their ears either. They too are rather wiry |
Teegy...I spent the late night reading about red legged yorkies which is merely an adjective...there is nothing inherently "wrong" with a red legged yorkie, its just as Judy (Yorkiemom1) described, its merely a throwback...I have a Biewer that looks like a Dalmation and is deaf...my friends love to tell folks they shes a miniature dalmation while they whisper...as though she can hear them reference her rareness! I'm not offended, she is what she is...I really think that Orlnurse was having an off moment OR is just so in love with her precious babies that any reference other than positive brings out the momma protective instinct!!! We all know shes quite a wonderful YTer and don't we just love devoted folks who are passionate about their pups?! I'm probably eating leather here, I'm just trying to keep the peace and let you know that I for one know you didn't mean to offend anyone...your jesting always cracks me up! |
Very well articulated, lynzy!!! I was trying to say the same thing and I just couldnt get the thought process aligned with the words! So I just threw the definition out there! |
My Rubin's parents are show champions. They had beautiful floor lenght hair and amazingly beautiful faces and body types. The breeder knew Rubin would never be a show dog. He was a 'Red legged Yorkie'. Some of you know my 10 year old Rubin. If you check out my photo albums you can see Rubin. He is six pounds, has a beautiful square look body type with a perfect top line. His features are delicate, short nose, beautiful black rimmed, brown eyes, and expressive black lipped mouth ( He gives toothy smiles). His coat never changed colors. The puppy black is still very black and the the tan markings are a deep reddish tan. Rubin's fur never mats or tangles, and it does not grow long. The best way I can describe it, is it feels like thick human hair. It reminds of my friend's hair. She is from China and her hair is perfectly straight, thick and feels hard to the touch. My Rubin of course was never bred because his coat type and coloring is not show type. But, I honestly think he knows he comes from royal champion lines. He is so prissy, spoiled and proud. He glides around as if to say look at me, I am Prince Rubin and I am beautiful ! |
