Help! Red legged yorkie My 4 month old Jada is a red legged yorkie. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can feed her for her coat. And what kind of shampoo can I use on her to make her hair more soft even though I know it will never be as soft. Let me know. Thanks! |
I really like Minksheen shampoo and pantene conditioner, it makes my cotton coat yorkies feel more silky. You could add a suppliment with amega acids but what you are dealing with is genetics and I dont think you can change that |

Lots of fun reading there, if you are a productholic:D I like to recommend Biogroom Silk conditioner, because it is usually easily available and if you go to their site, you can get free samples. Biogroom oatmeal shampoo is good too. For your puppy I love Plush Puppy shampoo (but not the conditioner). It is pricey, and you will probably need to order on line. Get the Biogroom silk conditioner instead. From the Iv St Bernard ISB, I really like the minkoil, this is a product that you can add to your conditioner. I leave it on for at least 5minutes for deep conditioning. Their shampoos and conditioners are good for maintenance bathing as well. Finally make sure your pup has access to water all the time, good quality puppy food. You could look at some additives; such as omega 3/6/9, or salmon fish oil, Isle of Dog royal jelly. I am confused, only because I am not real smart. Your Yorkie has a red leg and you want the color to change by diet? |
I would try the PEK by IV St Bernard. It does make all the coats I have tried it on softer although I admit I do not have a red leg so never tried it on that coarse of a coat. |

If you have a red legged yorkie, mostly likely you will always have a red legged yorkie. Mind you Jada is only 4 months so the colouring could change over the next year! As far as shampoos and conditioners... the products you've been given are all great! [when you say red legs... is it literally like a deep rusty red like most red yorkies, or is it more of a rich orangetan? just wondering... Tikka has a deep orange tan which I thought was red, but indeed at 8 months is growing at the roots to the correct color :D] |

Thanks for all the help and information! Well I don't really know if she is a red legged. But her coat is very thin and wiry. It's not soft or floofy. And she doesn't have alot of hair on her legs at all. Plus the color is kinda orange reddish you can say. |

I'm asking because one of our pups (now 8 + months old) has the thinner hair on the legs, thin sparse coat (though now it's beginning to grow and feel a bit thicker), her gold has greater depth to it as does her saddle area. I've read as much as I could find on 'red-legged Yorkies' and I'm still not sure that's what she is. A throw back of some sort (definitely different looking than her siblings), very elegant looking IMO. Talking with her mother's breeder she apparently looks like her great grandfather?? Thank you. |

2 Attachment(s) I always thought my Moka fit the description of red leg. I actually really love her hair. She is 4 years and her coat is still changing as far as texture goes, but she looks like she is always trimmed up, only she has never had a hair cut. Her hair NEVER mats, and is super easy to care for. Her head hair grows long. Her underneath is thin, but super super super silky. Her saddle is solid black, courser, brittle, but thick and does not grow more than 3-5 inches. I got a couple of good recent pictures. |
