I just found a little 4 1\2 week yorkie puppy in a local pet store. I felt so sorry for him and since I have ALWAYS wanted one I couldn't help but rescue him. The pet store owner told us he was 6 weeks old but once I got him home I noticed a few things like for one he had no teeth! I freaked out nd took him to the vet immediately! That's when we knew for sure he was a lot younger. I love him to pieces and my 5 year old named him Brutus lol. He's such a cuddle bug and is doing decent with a puppy pad since I won't let him see the looks of outside till he gets his shots.
If anyone has some great advice on things I can do, toys, best puppy food, etc I would love to hear it! Vet says Brutus is doing great and he's fiesty! Runs around and looks to little to me to even be walking but he's the best little thing ever!

Welcome. Wow that baby is so young. The main thing you need to watch for is that he is eating frequently even through the night. At that young, away from his mom he could go hypoglycemic very quickly. If you don't have any Nutrical on hand I would get some tomorrow. Make sure you know the signs of hypoglycemia and if you notice any signs give him nutrical or karo or pancake sugar and get him to the vet. You may want to report that pet store for selling puppies way to young. Keep us posted and ask any questions that you have.

that's horrible I would report the pet store firstly and you have come to the right place you need to get some great advice from the breeder and experienced owners on here. I hope wee Brutus is going to survive

Thanks Patti every time we get up at night which is like every 2 hrs I put his food down for him. Right now I have food out for him 24\7 because I'm so worried his will get hypoglycemic! I'm being pretty anal my husband says lol. I swear I don't think I got up this much with my own son when he was a baby!
Thanks for the advice! I've been reading up on yorkies nonstop for a week now and I give him a little kayro everyday just in case. I didn't know about the nutrical till today from this site so I'm off to petsmart tomorrow!

Thanks Teegy me too since I'm already so attached! He's doing great though! Vet check went excellent and I don't let him outside yet. He's the best little guy! I've learned a lot about toy breeds in the last week and he has another vet appt next sat.

He should still be nursing at that age. Does the vet have him on a goat's milk/water mix, along with food?

I got my ZoE at 6 weeks old and her teeth were barely through and she hardly ate. My Vet had me get Royal Canin Mini Babydog kibble and feed her every 3/4 hours. ZoE loved it and ate it with no difficulty. Thankfully, she had a healthy appetite and ate & drank well.

Your Vet is your best resource with a puppy that young.

Thanks Karan. I have Brutus on dry kibble/mixed with water and every time I put his bowl down I add more water so I know he's getting enough fluid. I actually had hi on a puppy milk replacement made by GNC that was recommended by his vet. He will be 6 weeks old saturday and eats almost 1/4 of a cup od dog food a day. He's a very healthy eater so far.

I got Bella at 6 weeks, and everything went smooth as could be. I will wish you the same luck that we had.

I would give the same advice as others and say get some goats milk, I believe they have it canned at walmart. Puppy formulas are just not as good. Goats milk is as close to mama's milk that you can get. Also ditto the advice on the nutrical, I luckily have never had to use it with either of my babies, but I always had it on hand just in case.

I would also make sure he gets plenty of rest and stays warm. Good luck to you. Things should be ok!! Lets see some pics too. :D

Sounds like you're getting some very good advice here !
I've had some experience with the Goats Milk as well.

One thing I'll recommend is...
That even with refrigeration, you probably need to get a can
of the Goats Milk consumed within 48 hours after opening.
IF your little one can't consume it all, you can put it out for
your others and at least get it lapped up, and not waste it.
It's just not very stable stuff.

Also, if there's any left in the Bowl, after your dog gets through,
be sure to wash (the bowl) out thoroughly with hot water.

At 4 weeks of age this little guy should still be lapping milk. Goat's Milk with equal parts of distilled water with Gerber's Rice cereal mixed in and a bit of Karo......Geez he has no teeth.....He shouldn't even be away from his mom.....once his milk teeth begin coming in you can add a premium puppy kibble, making sure it is soaked for a bit of softness....

I strongly suggest you obtain NutriDrops......it obsorbs through the gums much quicker.

All I can add is best of luck to you and the young pup. No pet store should sell a pup that young. Good to see that you rescued that little dog from that place.

I can't really add anything myself, but I would like to wish you good luck with such a little baby. Please follow the advice of the people on here to the letter...they all know what they are talking about when it comes to taking excellent care of these babies.

Puppy replacement milk can cause problems down the road: Shunt and premature cataracs.

I would think there are laws in KY against selling pups at such a young age.

Thanks guys. Ill get some goats milk asap. He will lap at water and stuff. He does awesome but I have to be sure he's the healthiest I can keep him. He's a little guy weighing in at 1.5 lbs but you wouldn't know it lol.
Someone told me there are laws in ky forbidding the sale of puppies till 8 weeks but I don't think anyone follows it and I don't even know who inforces it.
Brutus is now 6 weeks old so should he still be on goats milk? Just an after thought.

Thanks! He's doing awesome and is so cuddly. He's a lot of fun. Surprisingly things are going pretty smooth since I got him so early. I have had him for about 2 weeks now and I havent had any episodes of anything and he's already been to a vet.
I think all my pic files of him are too big and won't post on here :(
