I am so sorry to hear that Cookie didn't get a clean bill of health. I would get a second opinion, until then we always should live day to day you never know when it will be your last. Remember that miracles do happen, I have proof with my little man Mac. When he was 13 weeks old the vet basically told me it would be in Macs best interest to be put to sleep. He was diagnoised with Atlanto Axial Malformation, LP and for some unkown reason they could not keep his potassium levels up. They were almost no existant. To make a long story short I couldn't do it. I took Mac home and decided that I would get a second opinion and make whatever time he had left the most loving and caring I could for him. Well that was over a year and a half ago. Everytime I look at the little guy I think he is my little miracle and God decided I needed him and he needed me. |
Genie, I'm so sorry about the news you were given. I was given similar news about 6 months ago regarding Miko. My vet said that it was probably a shunt inside the liver and that it couldn't be repaired. He also didn't think it was a good idea to continue doing such extensive tests on him. Don't be disheartened by this though, it's been 6 months since Miko had the exploratory surgery looking for a shunt that they didn't find, and he's doing so well! You would never know he is sick at all because he doesn't have any symptoms at all except for the stones and crystals in his urine which the vet already found a solution for. He is as hyper, energetic, and happy as ever! My vet told me that Miko should live a normal life with the special low protein diet, the liver supplement, and the lactulose. You should ask your vet about the liver supplement...it's called denosyl and I've found it to help Miko soooooo much! I really recommend it. You may not be able to see the results, but his liver sure will! Also, ask the vet if lactulose might be something you need to give cookie. I know it's so hard to be positive at a time like this, but it is very possible for your cookie to have a normal life. Keep your chin up :) She's going to be okay! |

Genie- I am so sorry. Well there have been many dogs who live a very normal life with these conditions. Now what you can do for him is a very strict low protein diet. That will be the best for his system. And like you said he has no symptoms and he might never have symptoms. Good luck to you and to Cookie. I am here for you if you need anything don't hesitate to call me. Take care. |
Thank you guys. I am going to keep loving him and caring for him until he needs me to. I am getting all the paperwork/results from his tests and surgery. I am not going to put him through any more poking. The only reason why he had this exploratory surgery is because he had 2 Bile Acid tests and both were high. My vet told me the only way to know is to have a look inside. She did not suggest an ultrasound because they have a very low success rate at finding shunts. Two other specialist both suggested the exploratory surgery to look for a shunt because of the high Bile Acid results. Many dogs with liver problems dont have any symptoms at all until the problem is urgent. He is running around as if nothing is wrong at all and that is how I am going to let him be . He's on his low protein diet and the only treat I ever give him now is a plain unsweetened cheerio.I feel very lucky to be his mommy! Genie |
