Did you/do you name your pets in advance? ... or wait until you meet the pet? I am such a name freak. I have no second dog, and no plans for one in the immediate future, but I am always coming up with names I like for my second dog, LOL. Heck, I do it with my future childrens names and those won't come for a while. Hopefully. Random thought- I've been on such a Dennis Quaid kick lately again (watching his movies, etc - I do this with a lot of different actors, go through my phases, LOL!) and started thinking that Quaid could be a kind of cool dog name and really unique. I like unique names that you won't hear at the dog park much, if ever. I also am a last name for first name type person... like, I've always loved the names Tanner, Carter, Walker, Parker, etc. Do you think Quaid is kind of stupid though? Honestly? I can't decide if I'd be embarrassed saying it out loud or not, hahaha. I think it's kind of cool *shrugs* like a male version of Quinn or something. :yelrotflm Am I the only weirdo that has a list of future dog names saved, with... well, no second dog for a while? |
I think that would be a cool name for a dog. I don't plan my future dogs names in advance but when I decide to get a pet I think of a million names before I find my furbutt! |
I think Quaid would be cute....it'd be easy to say it in an angry voice...Quaid!! but might be kinda hard in a mushy gushy voice...Qua-aid!! I like out of the norm names, don't know what I was thinking naming her Princess...yeah, because no one ever names any pet that! But to go along with it, if I ever do get another, I want a girl and she just might be named Duchess.;) That would also feed into my obsession with old English history. I also like Luna a lot (from Luna Lovegood on Harry Potter:p). But I don't plan on another baby-baby for many years, and if I find a rescue in the meantime, I hope it's already named.:) |
I think Quaid and Quinn are both cute names. We did name Chachi and Jewels in advance but we had more than one name picked out so if the name we chose didnt fit them when they got here and saw their personality we could chose the name that most fit them. My 10 yr old daughter named Jewels and all our cats when they were kittens she did a good job too they all have super cute names. |
I didn't plan Levi's name at all...he came with it, responded to it, and I liked it. So easy. I'll occasionally hear a name I like and think "Nice dog name!" but I don't really have any names planned for future dogs. If/when I decide to add another pet, I'm sure I'll become obsessive about what names I like. I don't think Quaid is a stupid name for a dog at all! I like that it's a little different.:) |

Princess is so perfect for a Yorkie tho. I think it's funny because most dogs I meet named Princess are NOT princesses at all!! LoL. I love Duchess, cool name. Luna too. :) Quote:

i want another lil girl seen one a few weeks ago she was 6 months old and less the 2 pounds akc and $500.00 but hubby just got out of the hospital and he would not let me have her i'm asking around to see if the lady still has her i'm thinking her name would be Peasha or Patti always wanted a lil girl with that name |
I have lists with names I like, but I didn't name Chase or Calvin. The breeder named them, and they just fit so well that we didn't change them. It didn't hurt that Chase and Calvin were on my list's :) |
Brit- You are funny!! You know who named Pnut...?? Dh's drunk friend!!! True story :D |
I did not name Minnie til we got her. She was the runt of the litter and so tiny. It did not take long for her to be given her name at all. It sure fits her. |
Its a cute name! :grin2: |
I always pick a name in advance and end up changing it by the time I get the pet for some reason. Although, I didn't think of the name 'Marley' until after I got her. |
My planned name did not work when I found Max. It didn't fit him. :p I picked my boys' names after seeing pictures and decided they were right when I met them in person. Max's name evolved from Maximus to Maximo after an Italian neighbor mispronounced it, and dad and I decided we liked it. The name Quaid would be neat, but I would worry about possibly regretting it if the person did something I didn't like. |
We have always named our animals after we actually met them in person, even if they weren't coming with us that day but we always seem to have names in mind to choose from as soon as we have seen a picture or something. |
I had my personal perfect dog name picked out in my head long beforehand, back when I was just considering that I wanted a dog. But, after getting Snickers, it seemed the name I had always wanted did not suit him at all. It took me a week to figure out what did. I had thought of the name Snickers during that time and then one day, two little girls from the neighborhood walked by and said, "He looks like his name should be Snickers!" Since I'd thought of it too, I thought that must be the one. I called him "Snickers" and immediately reacted it the word as if he already knew it was his name. Now, everyone who sees him and asks his name always comments that he looks like a Snickers. |
My daughter named Buster, I don't know why she picked it, there seems to be a lot of Busters. I wanted to name him Sancho. It is slang for a guy who steals another guys girl, which fits Buster to a T. I have always wanted to name my dog Sancho but he's a Buster and he acts like one. Nothing against the Busters out there, you would have to see mine in action. |
My daughter named Troy before she even knew she was getting him. She randomly one day just said if I get a yorkie if it's a boy it'll be Troy and a girl it'll by Gabriella (Gabby for short). Both named after High School Musical characters. Troy's name actually fits him so I'm content with his name choice. I think I tend to pick names before I even get the dog, so I can tell the breeder and they are able to start calling the dog a name that he'll be familiar with when we bring him home. I think Quaid is a pretty interesting name. I do like it . |
I do the same thing - think of other dog names I like just in case we ever add to the brood. I like Quaid, but I am partial to the unusual name, probably because mine is such a plain one. |
I found it easier to name my kids than my pets! My new baby yorkie whom I will get in about 5 weeks, will be named in memory of my Molly , whom I lost this past Jan. Her name is MILEY.....M Molly I I L Love E Y You I like to name my pets with names that mean something to me ;) |
Just this morning I heard a Bob Marley song on the radio and thought that if I ever get another male dog, I would name it Nesta (Robert Nesta Marley) to go with Ziggy (who was named after his son). I have no plans to get another boy anytime soon.... (might be getting a female Morkie, though) I had planned for a long time to name my yorkie Roxy, but when I saw her she just didn't look like a Roxy. She's a Belle. BTW, I do like the name Quaid. But, one syllable names can be tough, I'd probably end up calling him Quaid-y..... I'm weird like that. |
While looking for a puppy I kept a file of girl and boy names. I spent several evenings, while watching tv, looking up names that I liked and putting them in a file. Every couple of evenings my girls and I would say them out loud to see which ones we didnt like and I would delete. I got it down to 3 or 4 for each, then fell in love with Mina's picture. Over several days I emailed back and forth with the breeder, she was lovely and sent me more pictures,we chose Mina. I think that the meaning of a name is very important,Mina= strong willed warrior,it fits her perfect. An older lady told me once to never name a pet or child something that I wasnt willing to yell out the back door 10 or 15 times in a row,it really works. |
I think I went through a million different names before and after I got Rizzo :) Then there was the week or two that I kept bouncing between Rizzo and Deuce. Realized he responded better to Rizzo (and my "Italian Family" can pronounce it) so that is what he finally was named. Though I do have a few names picked out for my future little girl, no breeder nor pup in site but I have a name, lol. I'll probably go with an R theme and she'll get Rosie (I love it) or something else when she does finally come into my life :) |
I usually pick their Registered Names way in advance....But, don't decide on a call name until I assess their personality. |
I don't like the name Quaid.:hide2: But I love real people names for dogs. I had no name picked out for Cooper. On our way home from picking him up, my phone rang and it was my sister-in-law. The caller ID said "The Coopers". I immediately thought that would be a perfect name and thankfully she wasn't offended! With Max I wanted another human name. I wanted to name him Bob because that's my dad's name and I thought it would be fun when he came to visit. I was torn between Max, Bob and Sam. |
I had the name Kaji picked out years before I met him. I think about a year before I got Kaji, I was going to adopt a puppy from the pound. I even had tags made out with his name in katakana. I didn't get the puppy. Then Kaji came and his name just fits so well! Kaji is an anime character who is a womanizer, and just this weekend canine Kaji kept trying to kiss a 12 year old black lab! He was trying so hard to win her over despite the obvious size difference. :p I have a few names picked out already. Boy: Hanai, Kurogane, (Kuro for short) and Harima. Girl: Yakumo, Iori, Auska, (sounds a lot like Oscar) and..... I can't remember the last one. Pretty much I'll name my pups after anime characters in hopes that their names are unique. So far so good. Kaji is he only dog named Kaji that I know of. |
I pick names out before the puppy but then again, I did this with kids names as well. A few months before getting Bri, we decided that Bree fit well. However, when we went and saw her she was so small and spunky so we decided to shorten her name. With Libby, I went through one hundred names. I had planned on naming Bri's sister Emi. But, when I met her a week ago, she did not look or feel like an Emi at all. I wanted something sweet and genuine. Libby fell in my lap and it fits her perfectly. We do not have her home yet, so I hope it still fits in a few weeks! And I love Quaid. But then again, I love weird, unique names. |
Emi was my other choise for Mina,my son nixed that, everybody got a vote because everybody was going to have to use the name. Mina truely fits our new baby. |
My daughter has named all our animals (cat from Key West: Sloppy Joe, cat from rescue: Zoe, Cairn Terrier: Isabella "Izi") but the Yorkie baby was mine to name, Jasmine Bleu "Jazi". (I had narrowed it down to 4 names till we brought her home and had a feel for what fit her). She's a December baby and I had liked Noel, but she's more a jazzed up personality to Jazi it is!! :note:  :note2: Daisy would have been a cute name too :daisy: |
Don't laugh...I have a list of future dog names hidden in my jewelry box that I've kept for YEARS ;) The funny part is that I never used them...when we got our 2nd dog we decided to give him a "D" name to match our 1st dog and when we got our yorkie we continued the "D" name theme....I guess I just need to add "D" names to my secret list! My husband is just as guilty, the other day I caught him testing out names and he has decided our next dog will be "Dega"....he's a huge NASCAR fan and loves the Talladega racetrack. I like Quaid, I prefer names that aren't common...less mix-ups at vets, dog parks, groomers, etc. if the dog has an uncommon name, I think :) |
We pre-name...Our boys are names after the Texas Longhorns...No one ever hears the name Bevo (longhorn mascot) for a dog, but most people say it back wrong after I tell them his name! Mac is pretty common, but his is after the head coach Mac Brown which is what i usually call him! We are planning on a new pup, and want to stay with the theme...We are probably going with Jordan (could work for a boy or a girl), after Jordan Shipley....but not positive! Its fun brainstorming though!!:) |
