Can I wash my yorkie twice per week? My yorkie is 9 weeks. I asked the vet how often to bathe and she said every 2 weeks. I guess I should have indicated that I WANT to bathe her more often. Is it bad for them? |
Joey's breeder told me I could bath Joey once a week, and there was a period he went through where I did it about every 5 days, he was just so oily. Some show breeders say that the number one problem with growing coat is a dirty coat, and I believe as long as you rinse thoroughly and condition the skin/hair, you'll not have any problems. Just make sure that you test bath water with the inside of your arm, puppies cannot tolerate hot water, you want warm not hot water. I should add Joey was 12 weeks old when she told me that, there may be a different rule for a dog under 12 weeks. |
Why so often? Is your pet in the mud often? You risk drying out the coat. Not recommended. |
I would say that she shouldn't need to be bathed more than once a week. In my opinion bathing a young puppy too often would be bad for her skin and coat and possibly be too stressful for her. |

Every other week should be sufficient. |

If you use a mild shampoo and conditioner suited to your dogs needs AND you properly rinse the coat out you will not increase oil production. Increased oil production will only occur if you are stripping the coat with harsh degreasers or scrubbing/scouring the skin. Also, if the products you are using are leaving the hair oily then you are either not rinsing the product out enough or you are not diluting it properly. |

Use baby wipes instead of bathing twice a week. My yorkie and biewer get bathed every 7-11 days. And my biewer is mainly white. Imagine her in 7 days.. BOL!! |

Just to propose another idea... what about doggy cologne/perfume? I've never USED it, but that would cover up the smell between baths wouldn't it? Maybe someone who actually uses that product will chime in. :) |
I bathe Kacee once a week and that is how often I always bathed my others. There have been times, though, that I bathed twice a week. Sometimes they manage to get smelly.:D |

I have tons of colognes and, while it does mask the smell, they usually don't last very long. I do sometimes use a self rinse shampoo in between baths if she gets her feet dirty or her face is extra stinky. |

This may be a dumb question lol, but what do you mean by "self rinse shampoo"? I've heard that mentioned before, but never used it. Is it a powder like waterless shampoo? |
